Chapter 06
He couldn't believe his eyes so he looked up at his wife, demanding an explanation. He raised the pictures up to Helena who only bit her lips, embarrassed. "Helena.." He called. She looked away, confirming his suspicions. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe she would do this to him. Everything she had ever brought to his life was misery. Mr. Saltzman got on his feet after seeing Kenzo's angry face, trying to calm him down. "Sir.. "Is that why you came home?" Kenzo asked Helena. She turned back to face him. She was full of guilt and if he didn't know her he would actually think she felt guilty and cared that he was hurt. She didn't. She never cared. "Babe.." She tried to touch him but he moved back with a scoff. "Babe?" He couldn't believe his ears. "One minute you're asking for a reunion, the next this. Sabotaging a contract you know how much means to me because you didn't get what you wanted?" "It's not that.." "Then what is?!" He did it. He raised his voice at her for the first time ever, the first time he would ever raise his voice that usual too, ever, not since he started talking, not when his father had an accident. He was known to always be the "robot child" who barely felt emotions. But she, she brought a side of his he never knew he had. She hurts him every single time. Helena was indeed startled back at his outburst, they all were. Mr. Saltzman rushed over to them. He turned to Helena. "You should leave, we'll continue this later" He said to her, then turned to Kenzo. " You shouldn't do this here, and we would have figured all this out sooner or later. I'm sorry Mr Alfredo, the president can't entrust the building to you if your other projects had been failing. It would be such a great loss, it had nothing to do with Mrs Alfredo here, she just helped speed up the process." Mr. Saltzman tried to explain, which only angered him the more. He scoffed then stepped back away from them. "Mrs Alfredo..." He muttered unbelievable, looking directly at Helena who only looked away in shame. He then turned back and walked right out and Gianna followed behind. Helena signed, dragging her fingers through her hair. She bit her lips in regret staring at the pictures on the table. She shouldn't have went this far. She had no choice. She had to do what needed to be done. She wouldn't have gotten the contract if he hadn't used such measures, the presidentia office were so keen on giving the deal to Alfredo Enterprise as he was one of the most reliable company in the country. They couldn't find any fault in them and thought it was best to five them the contract. She had to do that. Kenzo's dad had covered up the failed building projects from the public coverage so no one knew. Upon giving this information and evidences to the presidential office, they didn't think twice before canceling the contract. Laurent Enterprise was fastly growing to be one of the new biggest Construction company in Canada anyways so tbey didn't waste any chance in giving the contract to them and Helena's dad also knew the president personally so it wasn't such a big deal. 'He hates me know, doesn't he?' Helena asked herself. She walked over to the table and grabbed the pictures. "This stays away from the media. If it just as thinly gets to the media, I'll make sure you lose your job, is that understand Mr. Saltzman?" She commanded. "Of course Mrs. trust me, we've been buddies for years now and I have never failed you" He said with a big smile. Helena ignored him and walked right out. Should she had say no to her dad? Helena thought on her ride home. ** One Day Ago ** It had been a day since her last conversation with Kenzo and he had flatly shut her out and denied her request. She needed to get pregnant and wanted it to be with him only and he was straight about how uninterested he was with that and she had been pondering all day long on how to get him to agree. Her phone suddenly let out a beep, she picked it up and it was her dad calling her. She sighed subconsciously. As much as she loved her dad, he was an handful. She wondered what else he wanted this time around. She then remembered she hasn't informed him about her visit home and she sighed once again before sliding to the right and answering the call. "Hey Dad" She sounded as normal as she could. "You didn't think I deserved to know you went home to your husband?" He went straight to his point, he was exactly like that. Helena chuckled nervously. "Well, I did. What's up? Are you calling me because of that? It's nothing, just had some things to do" She tried to played it off cool. "You know I couldn't care less about whatever you do with him" He said flatly. Helena bit her lips then nodded in response like he could see her. "So?" "There's a contract I want.. and I want you to get it." He said, his tone got serious and Helena's face darkened. "Which?" She got in work mode. "The president's" "The president's? Which president?" Helena asked, sounding confused. "America's President. News just got to me yesterday that there's a construction contract ongoing and he needs a company to handle it for him, and we seem to be the perfect company for that, think about it Helena, how much spots we would jump if we got the deal. That's our secret to the top easily. You've done a lot already, think of this as an elevating stone and your work is done. We got the no 1 spot in the construction industry already, two no 1s, that's exactly what we want, isn't it?" Carmen said over the phone, practically laughing already in success. He knew it was his already. He had that much confidence in his daughter. "I will get it" Helena said without a second thought and Carmen let out a smirk from the other side of the phone. "I know you will, I trust you" He said and Helena nodded with a smirk. "And if that's all.. " "It's not" Carmen cuts in and Helena raised her brows. "Your husband.." He started getting Helena's attention immediately. "Yeah?" "I was told he practically got the contract. he got the president under his fingers. You will have to go through..." "I'll get it. It's ours." Helena cut him off. Carmen let out a smirk. "Good" He said then hanged up.Chapter 46Sleep With Me, Dear HusbandThe door clicked softly as Helena stepped into the apartment, her fingers curling around the edge of the frame. She hadn’t been here in weeks. The familiar scent; a blend of cedarwood and something uniquely Kenzo, washed over her like a warm tide. Home. She took a breath and moved further inside, her feet cushioned by the plush rugs he’d added since her last stay. Her gaze scanned the space: clean, quiet, lived-in. Yet, something felt… different. The lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft flicker of candles spread across the room. Gentle instrumental music played in the background, and the faint scent of fresh lilies hung in the air. Her favorite.“Kenzo?” she called out, voice still a little hoarse from recovery. No answer. She took another step forward and spotted the low table in the living room. A small covered dish sat in the center, next to a bottle of chilled sparkling grape juice and two glasses. Her brows lifted. Then she saw it; a
Chapter 45Peace and PromisesThe soft hum of the hospital room lingered in the early morning light. Rays of sun filtered through the blinds, casting faint stripes across the white walls and Helena’s peaceful face. Her chest rose and fell in a rhythm that Kenzo had come to memorize over the past few weeks; slow, fragile, but steady.Kenzo sat slouched in the chair beside her bed, his hand still loosely wrapped around hers from the night before. The crumpled letter lay folded in his jacket pocket, though its words echoed relentlessly in his mind. She stirred. His eyes snapped open, posture straightening instantly. Her fingers twitched beneath his, and then her lashes fluttered. Slowly, she blinked her way into consciousness, the pale amber light warming her skin.“Hey,” she whispered, her voice weak but familiar.Kenzo leaned closer. “Hey.”For a second, neither said anything. There was no need to.Her gaze drifted to their joined hands. “You stayed.”“Of course I stayed.”Helena’s lip
Chapter 44Her Goodbye LetterThe room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of evening seeping through sheer curtains. The machines by Helena’s bedside beeped with slow precision, each pulse a quiet reminder of her fragility. She was resting, finally, after a grueling round of treatment. Her breathing had steadied, but her frame still looked too delicate against the white sheets.Kenzo sat in the corner, arms resting on his knees, head bowed. He hadn’t meant to find the letter. It had fallen from between the pages of one of her old sketchbooks, the one tucked into her suitcase that Gianna had dropped off earlier. At first, he thought it was just another set of notes. She often wrote when she couldn’t sleep. But the second he saw his name in her handwriting, just his name on the front of a sealed envelope, his chest clenched. To Kenzo, in case I don’t get the chance to say it in person. He had stared at it for a full minute before peeling it open, hands trembling. Now, letter in hand,
Chapter 43The Last StandThe conference room was brighter than Helena remembered.Glass walls let the midday sun spill across the sleek marble floors, casting sharp lines and reflections. Her company’s emblem gleamed on the far wall, once a symbol of pride. Today, it felt heavier, like a name she was about to surrender.Helena sat at the head of the long oval table, papers stacked neatly before her, fingers clasped to still their tremble. Around her sat the board of directors, her department heads, and a few key shareholders. Aaron’s seat was conspicuously filled, though his posture leaned back in smug anticipation.Kenzo stood by the door.He wasn’t here as a businessman or a representative. He was here for her. Just her.The hum of low conversation faded as Helena stood.“Thank you all for being here,” she began, her voice clear but soft. “This meeting wasn’t scheduled, but it is necessary.”Her eyes swept the room. Many of these faces had doubted her return. Some still did. But it
Chapter 42Confronting the TruthKenzo barely slept. The night had dragged into the kind of dawn that felt more like dusk. The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and anxiety. Helena had drifted in and out of sleep, murmuring now and then, but she hadn’t said much else.He stayed beside her until the morning light began to cut through the blinds, casting pale gold across her still figure. His fingers had remained curled loosely around hers, but his mind was elsewhere, swirling, clawing at the puzzle she refused to let him solve.Something was wrong.More than just exhaustion. More than fainting. And he needed answers.By mid-morning, he stepped out of the room, giving himself space to think. Or maybe to breathe. The hospital’s side lobby was quiet. He called Alec.“Come to the hospital,” Kenzo said flatly. “Bring Gianna. Now.”Alec and Gianna arrived within the hour. Kenzo was already waiting in one of the consultation rooms, pacing. When they stepped inside, he didn’t waste a secon
Chapter 41Lines CrossedThe air inside the event hall buzzed with anticipation. Journalists, executives, and stakeholders filled the marble space, camera lights blinking like stars. Kenzo’s company was unveiling its latest eco-conscious skyscraper project, and Helena had played a silent but powerful hand in organizing the event. Even after everything, after the quiet days apart and the unanswered calls—she had followed through on her promise to help him redeem the company’s image. She stood by the stage, just off to the side, dressed in a sleek cream pantsuit that contrasted the deep green of the backdrop. Her heels were planted firm, shoulders squared, smile composed. No one could tell that her legs ached, that her breathing was shallow, that she hadn’t slept the night before. She wouldn’t let them see. From the other side of the room, Kenzo’s eyes caught hers for the briefest second. He wasn’t supposed to be looking at her, but he was. Not with warmth, just with guarded curiosity.
