A nudge to my elbow and my father’s hushed words, “Bow down to him in respect” made me break eye contact and lower my head.
I slightly bent down, showing my respect to the warlock in front of us. Keeping my eyes to the ground, I saw his tall legs disappear from my view. He walked around and opposite us as he sat down on the large sofa. He was a natural leader. My father hastily turned to look at Lord Blade and bowed in respect again before saying, “Lord Blade, what a pleasure to meet you again!” I still kept my head low, so I couldn’t read the warlock’s face. “The pleasure is mine, Gerald. Now, if you’re done with the formalities, please sit down” his voice was deep and low yet intimidating enough to scare me. Chills ran down my spine and I hesitated for a moment to sit down on the sofa along with my father. I continued to keep my head low, not wanting to upset my father and Lord Blade. I did not wish to get into trouble and be punished. “So, Gerald, have you come to pay your debt?” Lord Blade asked. Debt? What kind of debt is it? My father’s business has been plummeting for a while but had it been so bad that he needed to borrow? That too, from such a dangerous and powerful man! My heart sank further into my chest as I was dreading the outcome of this situation. Why was I even called upon to join him in the first place? What significance had I held? That was soon answered. “My sincere apologies, Lord Blade…I have failed to accumulate the amount to pay off my debt. But, I have got something for you to compensate for my debt!” My father spoke. I slightly looked up to see Lord Blade and saw amusement flash in his grey irises. “This young lady, here beside me is my only daughter, Flora Harper. She is a well-mannered and obedient lady!” My heart stopped beating completely. “Where are you going with this?” Lord Blade interjected. I was petrified by now. “Sir, she is my most prized possession and now, I’m handing her over to you. You can have her do whatever you may want to. She won’t complain. She won’t disrespect your commands. I’ve raised her well” my father completed. His words left my heart shattered to a million pieces. He was selling me. He did not even hesitate to give me away. My eyes brimmed with tears and I had to bite my lips to not let any sobs escape me. There was a deafening silence for a few moments before I heard Lord Blade shuffle in his seat. He asked, “Are you sure about it, Gerald? Are you really ready to sell your daughter just like that?” “Yes, sir. Since I can’t clear my debt, I’m giving you my next prized possession. I’m sure about this!” My father betrayed me. I couldn’t help the tears which flowed down my cheeks, wetting my lap as it fell down. “Very well then. I will accept it” Lord Blade’s words didn’t help the pain which engulfed my entire body. “I’m glad we could eventually come to a settlement, Lord Blade! If that’s all, may I take my leave?” So my father doesn’t even want to bid me a farewell. He was really leaving me all alone. I wanted to scream at him, tell him how much he’s hurt me but I couldn’t. I didn’t want to be punished. “You may leave. And you better think before you strike up any more deals with anyone. Remember, your next most valuable possession is with me. If I were you, I wouldn’t risk anymore debts” Lord Blade then got on his feet, making my father and I get on our feet as well. “I’ll be careful, Lord Blade. Thank you so much for having us over!” The warlock immediately dismissed my father and I watched him from the corner of my eyes. My father bowed once more before walking away to the door without sparing me another glance. It just ripped my soul apart. Now, it was only Lord Blade and I in the room. My fear started to take control, subsiding the sad inside me. I lowered my head even more when I felt his gaze on me. It felt like an eternity before he spoke. “Have you had anything to consume, Miss. Harper?” His voice slightly made my body jump. I shook my head in response, too afraid to speak. “I need you to speak words!” he commanded. “I’m s-sorry” I stuttered an apology. “Let me ask again, have you had anything to consume?” “No, sir” I steadied my voice this time. “It’s almost time for the midday meal. I will have someone show you to your chamber to clean up and then you can join me for a meal” “Yes, sir” I didn’t know how to respond further. I was already being kept here. This is not a bad dream but rather, something actually happening. The door to the meeting room opened and Lenox took a few steps inside. “Lord Blake, I’m here!” he said. “Lenox, please ask one of the maids to show this young lady to one of the guest rooms. Have them hand her something comfortable to wear before sending her down for a meal!” Lord Blade explained. “I will see to it right away, sir!” Lenox bowed again before walking out of the door and closing it. After waiting for a few moments in awkward silence, a knock on the door relieved me. “Come in!” Lord Blade said. A maid walked in and bowed her head in respect. “Lord Blade, I was asked to help a young lady to her chamber!” she said. “This is her. Please make sure Miss. Harper is tended to! I do not want any mistakes, understand?” Lord Blade’s commanding aura scared the maid as well. “Yes sir! We will be sure to tend to her needs!” the maid replied in a panic. “You can proceed” the warlock said and walked past me and toward the door. He briefly glanced over at me before exiting the meeting room. I sighed in relief. “Miss. Harper, please follow me!” the maid said and gestured to the door, asking me to leave with her. I was still a bit hesitant but I did not want to anger Lord Blade, so I followed the maid outside.I wandered around the manor's garden, minding my own business and actively avoiding Caspian since he still held some kind of resentment towards me. Always finding reasons to paint me bad in front of Blade. But as I was trying to head back to the back entrance of the manor, I heard some rustling around in the bushes. Turning around, I saw nothing in sight. But I was still feeling unsettled since the incident from the morning.Ignoring the sound for now, I resumed walking towards the back entrance of the manor. Only a few steps forward, I was suddenly snatched from my waist. Before I could even scream, something wrapped around my throat and started to choke me. Tears spilled from my eyes as I struggled against whatever was holding me. A low, terrifying growl reached my ear, hot breath fanning against the nape of my neck. I momentarily freezed as I realised that whatever had captured me was anything but a human. Probably an animal or a hybrid of some sort. Or perhaps a monster... Creat
I silently ate my breakfast as Caspain kept most of the conversation going with the royals. Flora as usual was eating silently beside me, not involving herself in topics. It was difficult to look Caspian in the eyes and say "You were right all along, dear cousin!" I was avoiding talking much with him, afraid that I might slip up. After our breakfast, we all walked out the door of the manor, bidding our farewell to the royals. Princess Marina carefully slipped through the conversation Caspian and Prince Luke were having and approached me. "Please do not let anyone else know about it..." she whispered whilst keeping a straight face to avoid suspicions."Your highness, I promise to keep it with me. I won't let it out, at any cost!" "Thank you so much, Lord Blade!" she gave me a small smile before going back to where Prince Luke was. Soon after, the prince and the princess got into the car and left. I turned around to look at Flora who stood aside silently with her head lowered. Can s
Princess Marina's request caught me off guard at first. She silently pleaded with her eyes and occassionally looked around to check for any third person witnessing the encounter. "Okay, how about we talk in my study?" I suggested. The princess approved of it and I signalled for her to follow me. Walking upstairs, I led the way to my study and opened the door for her to enter first. "Thank you so much for your time, Lord Blade!" the princess said as soon as I closed the door behind us. "Of course! What is it that you wanted to discuss with me?" I asked. Princess Marina inhaled slow and deep before speaking. "Well, I was linking with my parents back in Adriosana and I learnt something about..." she trailed off, leaving me curious. I urged her to speak as my brain started to run with multiple possibilities. It didn't take a genius to know this was about Flora. "Could you give me your word, that you won't speak to anyone about it? Especially not my husband!" She seemed a bit frant
What we all just witnessed was something unexpected and equally surprising. "Caspian, stay here with her, I'll have a look!" I said and rushed out of my room.Running downstairs, I almost bumped into Lenox. "Lord Blade, did you hear—""I did! Come with me!" I instructed Lenox and went out the back door of my manor.I looked around at first, trying to find anything, anything that could tell me what just went down. After finding nothing, I decided to have a look at the area where we all saw the blood covered bloke.Upon reaching the area, I and Lenox stepped into the woods, not deep though. But we weren't able to find anything. Not even a trace of the events we witnessed. "Blade! Anything there?" Caspian called out to me from my chamber's balcony. I turned to look up at him and shook my head. "Shall I join? We can cover more ground that way!" he suggested. "We'll do that later. For now we have the demon prince to worry about..." I linked him."Almost forgot about him. Well, come back
I followed Blade's gaze and then turned to look at him again. "Well, I'm glad you have something left of them. Do you read it often?" "Not very often but when I'm stressed or not in a great mood. Their journal entries are a good refreshers and tells me more about their love for each other. Or other things in general" he answered. "Must be nice to know more about them..." I murmured and sighed.Blade smiled small and said, "Yes, indeed. So do you plan on reading the book right now?"I hummed in response and glanced at the book. "I don't want to sleep...not yet" The warlock just shrugged and started walking toward the door. I followed him out as he turned around to lock the library again. We went back to his room and I decided to sit at his desk to read under the lamp. I didn't want Blade to sleep uncomfortably if I were to have lights turned on for me to read.I insisted Blade to just get some rest whilst I continued to read the book he picked out for me. Though he was against it at
All of a sudden, Blade's expression changed from that of semi-satisfaction to extreme confusion with a hint of surprise. "Is something wrong?" I asked."Your eyes...they're red!" he replied. I furrowed my brows in confusion and slightly tilted my head. "What do you—" I got cut off when I heard a low voice in my head. I couldn't make out what it said but it spooked me too much. The longer I stared at Blade, the more erratic my heartbeats got. I felt a pull toward him, something which felt extremely natural yet unnatural."Must be my imagination..." Blade said and exhaled. "My apologies for the false panic!" "No, that's fine. You must be tired...I mean, I've troubled you enough..." I trailed off and looked away. But the beating of my heart quickened up, my subconscious forcing me to look back at the warlock.Blade shook his head and replied with a simple "No" before cupping my face. "Whatever this is you're going through, it is very serious. It's not something you can dust off!" he s
