“Mr. Moretti. What an unexpected pleasure.”
Alessandro ignored his greeting.
“Is this the woman your staff accused of using a fake credit card?”
The manager's smile disappeared.
“Sir, there must have been a misunderstanding. Our staff were only following—”
“Following what?” Alessandro interrupted. “The instructions to insult customers who don't look wealthy enough?”
Nobody answered.
Isabella stood beside him, her fingers nervously gripping her handbag. She wished the entire incident could disappear, but Alessandro had no intention of letting it go.
Marco stepped forward.
“The card is genuine. The bank temporarily blocked the transaction because it flagged an unusual purchase location. The restriction has already been lifted.”
Alessandro looked at the manager.
“So the card was never fake.”
“No, sir.”
“And yet you allowed your employees to humiliate my wife.”
The manager turned towards Isabella immediately.
“Mrs. Moretti, I sincerely apologize. We had no idea who you were.”
Alessandro's expression hardened.
“That is your apology? You are sorry because you didn't know her name?”
The manager swallowed.
“I apologize for the way you were treated, ma'am.”
Alessandro turned to Marco.
“Every employee involved in this incident is dismissed. I don't want them representing any business associated with my family.”
The saleswoman began crying.
“Please, sir. I didn't know. I didn't mean to offend her.”
“You didn't need to know who she was to treat her with respect.”
He glanced at his guards.
“Take them outside. Break the hands they used to push my wife away.”
“Alessandro!”
Isabella's voice came out softer than she intended.
He looked down at her.
She was visibly uncomfortable, but she gathered enough courage to speak.
“Please. I don't want anyone hurt because of me.”
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then his gaze returned to the terrified employees.
“They will lose their jobs. That is already more mercy than they showed my wife. Take them away.”
The guards escorted them out.
The manager quickly bowed again.
“Mrs. Moretti, please allow us to serve you properly. Anything you want is yours.”
Alessandro looked at Isabella.
“Choose whatever you like.”
She hesitated.
“Anything?”
“Anything.”
The manager personally attended to her. Dresses, shoes, handbags and accessories were brought out, and Isabella was encouraged to try whatever caught her attention.
At first, she chose only two dresses.
Alessandro noticed.
“Is that all?”
She nodded shyly.
“That's enough.”
He leaned closer. “You came here to shop, not to prove how little you can ask for.”
Her cheeks warmed.
After another hour, she had selected several beautiful dresses, elegant shoes and handbags. For the first time, the staff treated her with the respect she had deserved from the beginning.
When they finally returned to the main entrance, Marco approached Alessandro with a folder.
“Sir, the mall owner is available. He has agreed to discuss the sale.”
Isabella looked up.
“The sale of what?”
Alessandro handed the folder to Marco.
“The mall.”
She blinked.
“Why are we buying a mall?”
“Because I don't want you wondering whether you are welcome in places like this.”
“Alessandro, you cannot buy an entire mall because one shop assistant was rude to me.”
“I can.”
He said it so casually that she almost laughed.
“That's not the point.”
He studied her face, then reached for her hand.
“I know. But I want you to have something that belongs to you. Something nobody can take away because they think you don't deserve to be here.”
Her expression softened.
“I'm your wife. I don't need an entire mall.”
“I know you're my wife.” His thumb brushed gently over her knuckles. “I want you to have it because you're Isabella.”
He turned to Marco.
“Complete the purchase. Register the ownership in my wife's name.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
Isabella stared at him, still struggling to understand what had just happened.
“Alessandro?”
“Yes, amore?”
She looked down at their joined hands.
“Thank you for standing up for me.”
His expression softened.
“You should never have to thank me for that.”
He lifted her hand and pressed a kiss against her knuckles.
Then he opened the car door for her.
As she settled inside, Isabella found herself looking at him differently.
For the first time, she wondered whether the ruthless man everyone feared was slowly becoming someone she could love without being afraid.
Bianca paced across her bedroom, her phone pressed tightly against her ear.“Did you see what they posted?” she demanded. “They made Isabella look like some innocent victim, and now everyone is praising her.”Roberto sighed on the other end. “What exactly did you expect?”“I expected them to be embarrassed by her! Instead, Alessandro's mother stood beside her, his father defended her, and the whole family acted as though she had done nothing wrong.”“Then perhaps you should have thought before posting those pictures.”Bianca stopped pacing.“Are you blaming me?”“I'm telling you that you have made enough noise. The Morettis are not the kind of family you can provoke without consequences.”Bianca scoffed. “You sound frightened of them.”“I have reasons to be.”For a moment, neither spoke.Roberto sat behind his desk, staring at the documents scattered before him. His financial problems had not disappeared simply because Isabella had married a wealthy man. If anything, they had become w
Isabella had never imagined that a simple charity visit could turn into such a disaster. She stood in the children's home's small activity hall, holding a clipboard while Elena spoke with the director. The children had gathered around a table, excited about the new educational supplies the foundation had promised to provide.Everything had been going well.Until Bianca arrived.Isabella noticed her near the entrance and immediately stiffened.“What is she doing here?” she whispered.Elena followed her gaze.“Do you know her?”“She's my stepsister.”Elena's expression changed slightly. Before she could say anything, Bianca approached them with a bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.“Isabella! What a surprise.”Isabella forced a polite smile.“Bianca.”“I heard you were doing charity work now. How wonderful.”Her eyes travelled over Isabella's clothes before returning to her face.“I must say, you've adjusted to your new life very quickly.”Elena stepped forward.“Good afternoon. An
Isabella stared at the invitation on her dressing table. It was an elegant cream-coloured envelope bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was the schedule for the foundation's first planning meeting, along with a list of projects Elena wanted her to review. She had read everything twice, yet she still wasn't sure where to begin.A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.“Come in.”Alessandro entered, already dressed for work.“Still studying?”She held up the papers.“Your mother sent me all these documents. I think she expects me to understand everything by Wednesday.”He collected the papers and glanced through them.“She isn't expecting you to become an expert overnight.”“Some of these programmes have been running for years. I don't even know how they are funded.”“Then ask. That's how people learn.”Isabella sighed.“What if I make a mistake?”He placed the documents on the dressing table.“Then you correct it.”She looked at him.“You make it sound so easy.”“Because it is. You'r
Saturday morning arrived with an unexpected phone call.Isabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”She glanced at him through the mirror.“Does your father know we're coming?”“He was the one who invited us.”“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.“Because my mother enjoys having people around. My father enjoys giving orders.”Isabella smiled. She had spent the past few days thinking about her last conversation with Vittorio. Although he hadn't been openly unkind, she couldn't forget the way he had questioned her place in the family. She turned towards Alessandro.“Do you think he likes me?”Alessandro looked at her for a moment.“Why is that so important to you?”“Because he's your father. I don't want there to be problems between you because of me.”He walked closer and placed his hands on
Alessandro left the bedroom early the following morning.Isabella was still asleep when he dressed, adjusted his watch and picked up his phone. He paused beside the bed, looking at her peaceful face.He had promised her that he would be honest, but he wasn't entirely sure what his father wanted to discuss. Whatever it was, he didn't want it disturbing her morning. He bent down and kissed her forehead before leaving.Don Vittorio was already seated behind his large mahogany desk when Alessandro entered the family estate.“You're late.”Alessandro glanced at his watch.“I'm three minutes early.”“Then perhaps I've become impatient in my old age.”Alessandro pulled out a chair and sat down.“What is this about?”His father pushed a folder across the desk.“Your wife.”Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.“What about her?”Vittorio opened the folder.“I've been receiving questions about her.”“From whom?”“Some of our business associates. They want to know why you have suddenly beco
Isabella was sitting by the bedroom window when Alessandro walked in, his phone pressed against his ear.“No, Father. I haven't forgotten.”He listened for a moment, his expression becoming increasingly serious.“Sunday. We'll be there.”He ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.Isabella looked up from the book in her hands.“Is everything all right?”“My father wants us at the family estate on Sunday.”She sat straighter.“Your father?”“Yes.”“Is something wrong?”“No. At least, not that he has told me.”She hesitated before asking, “Is it another family gathering?”Alessandro chuckled.“Something like that. My father enjoys having everyone under one roof. He calls it family tradition. I call it an unnecessary interruption to my weekend.”Isabella smiled.“Then why do you always go?”“Because refusing him usually creates more trouble than attending.”She laughed softly. He approached her and sat beside her.“Are you worried?”“A little.”“Why?”She closed her book.“I
