Chapter 3

Author: Ivy Marlowe
Victor tested me after I opened the door. "We're going to a party later tonight. Are you ready?"

I stared at him blankly. "What are you talking about, Dad? What party?"

Victor smiled, but he quickly hid his smile. "Ethan, you've lost your memory again."

He took my hand. "Come on. I'll bring you to the hospital for a checkup."

My heart skipped a beat. If he took me to the doctor, would the doctor not expose everything?

Fortunately, the doctor only examined me once before saying in confusion, "Strange, but this is good news. The memory loss hasn't affected him enough to the point of causing any mental impairment or complete lobotomization."

Victor asked, "So, even if he loses his memory a few more times, he'll be fine, right?"

The doctor nodded, and Victor hurried outside. When I went out of the consultation room, I heard him whispering over the phone, covering it with his hand as he said to someone, "This is great! The more times Ethan loses his memory, the more we can help Zach."

He had lowered his voice, but when he saw me come out, he quickly hung up.

I tried not to sob and asked, "Dad, I think I heard you mention someone named Zach. Who is Zach?"

Victor's expression shifted, but he still forced out a smile. "Oh, after your accident, that boy kept us company for a few years. He's your younger brother now. I'll introduce you to him another day."

I nodded and said nothing.

Zachary Jackson was the young man who had once looked almost exactly like my old self. When I woke up and saw that he had nearly replaced me, I had been heartbroken for a long time.

Both Victor and Nora worried that I would overthink things, so they had sent him away and promised never to contact him again. But now, it seemed that was not true at all.

Zachary was gone, yet they had been sacrificing me all along to somehow empower him.

After we got home, Mia brought over a glass of water. "You. Drink."

It had been a long time since Mia had called me her brother or by my name.

I watched her repeatedly signal to Dad with her eyes, and my instinct told me there was something wrong with the water. But the memory of them forcing the drink down my throat whenever I refused made my hand tremble as I reached for the glass.

As soon as I turned around, I quietly poured all the water onto my clothes. Then, I pulled my coat tightly around myself and hurried back to my room.

Behind me, Dad asked Mia, "Did you mix in all the drugs earlier?"

"Don't worry, Dad. I put in everything you made earlier," Mia said.

I slammed the door shut as I panted. Before long, someone pounded on my door. "Ethan, open the door!"

I opened it and pretended to be half awake. I was about to say something when I suddenly clutched my throat. I forced out a hoarse sound, panic all over my face.

The doubt on Victor's face disappeared as he simply turned and left.

Then, while he was not paying attention, I followed him in secret. In my parents' bedroom, a man who looked almost exactly like my old self was floating in the air.

That was Zachary, the man who now looked even more like me.

Nora looked anxious as she asked, "What's going on? We clearly made him lose his voice."

Disappointment filled Zachary's eyes. "What am I supposed to do about tomorrow's competition?"

Dad felt bad for him, and he urgently said, "Just give us a little more time, Zach. We'll find a way to transfer his system to you. Once that's done, everything will be over."

I returned to my room in a daze as everything I had just seen kept replaying in my mind.

What exactly was going on?

I fell asleep in a daze.

The next day, a mechanical voice in my head woke me up.

'Host! You finally remember me!'

  • Someone to Replace Me   Chapter 9

I listened to the sobs coming from my old world with a frown. I was only curious about how Zachary would be treated after going back. I had never thought of forgiving them.I was about to close the screen when I saw Victor pick up a bottle of liquid and splash it at Zachary. He screamed as the skin on his arm burned away.Victor then shouted, "You refuse to forgive us because you still blame us for treating him too well, right? Here! I'll prove it to you! Our family only has one son, and that's you! No one else matters!"He then picked up a knife and stabbed Zachary hard. All I could do was look away in disgust. Finally, I said, "Enough! Stop torturing him!"I hated Zachary, but I hated this family even more. I had lived with them for more than a decade, but I had never truly seen who they were. When they heard my voice, they stopped moving.I sighed. "Call 911 for him."After the ambulance took Zachary away, I looked at my family on the screen and said softly, "I have already

Zachary glared at me with hatred as he suffered through the pain. "Why?! Why do you get to live such a good life! In that world, you had four people loving you! When they finally fell into comas, you came to this world instead! Why is my life so miserable? Why do I have to scheme for everything?"He cried, sobbing like some broken thing.A realization appeared in my mind, and I asked, "Zane?"His head snapped up. The blood on his face made him look even more horrifying. "Yeah! That's me! Do you know how much I sacrificed just to look like you?"Hearing this, I froze.Zane had been my playmate when I was young, and his parents had died when he was little. I had pitied him, and I did my best to take care of him whenever I spent time with him. Later, he dropped out of school and left. We never saw each other again after that.I had never imagined he had been so jealous of me in secret as he lay on the floor with his limbs twisted.Grant found a long needle and stabbed it into Zacha

Hannah sobbed and nodded at Grant, who was holding her in his arms. "I always thought that there was something different about him. Now I know I was just overthinking it."Her eyes were full of tenderness as she looked at Zachary. "I don't know how or why he came back from the dead, but this is enough for me."Suddenly, the singing stopped abruptly. My voice came through the microphone with perfect clarity. "You told me to sing for you. Does anyone else know?"Zachary's face went white. The whispers below were magnified countless times.Grant shot to his feet and quickly tried to bring the room under control. "Who's speaking? Bring him here!"Hannah instinctively ran backstage, but Zachary stopped her by stepping in front of her. "Mom..."Her face went cold as she shoved him away. He fell to the floor, his eyes full of hatred.I was brought out from the back. When she looked at my face, she froze. The next second, she looked at Zachary again.I simply asked, "Mom, is your bac

Zachary grabbed my hand anxiously as he said, "Sing for me backstage, alright? Your face is ruined now, so they can't recognize you anymore. You have nothing now, and I can help you. As long as you sing for me, I'll give you half of everything I can get."I pulled my hand free and punched him without reservation. "I'm not you. Now that I'm back, it's time for you to head to the exit."Zachary glared at me, then suddenly smiled. "Fine. Don't blame me for this."At the very next second, he grabbed a knife and stabbed himself in the stomach. Then, he screamed. "Help!"Everything happened in a flash.I had just frozen for a second before the people who broke through the door twisted my arms behind my back and pinned me down. Then, my parents in this world, Grant and Hannah Black, rushed in. They had given me so much warmth when I was here...They did not even glance at me as they went straight to Zachary. "Ethan, you... You."Hannah's face turned deathly pale as she supported him. "

'Host, I haven't been activated for a long time. I need ten minutes to warm up. Please stand by...' The system's guilty voice came into my mind.I froze. The next second, Victor had already pinned me to the floor. He pressed down on me, his voice cold. "We've treated you well since you were little, but you ran away when something happened! Now that we have a new son, you should be grateful that you can sacrifice yourself for Zach!"I struggled with all my strength as I looked at Nora beside me. But she simply turned her head away, unable to look at me.Lena tried to persuade me and said, "You probably won't die just because your throat is cut open! Dad is so good with medicine, he'll definitely be able to make something to stop the bleeding."Mia threw herself on top of me and held me down, too. "Why won't you just die? If you die, my older brother can come back! I miss him! So, just die already!"I was choked to the point I could barely breathe. Only then did I accept the final
