"I didn't glue you to the spot, dude. I'm not keeping you hostage." Stephanie shrugged. Jacob expected no less, and yet he had no intention of losing his cool. "I told you to apologize." Jacob said in return. "And I made it clear that I'm not going to apologize because I didn't do anything wrong." Stephie didn't miss a beat in defending herself. "You defied a clear instruction." Jacob expressed."Which was petty and stupid." Stephie snapped back, then she added, "What's with the tough guy attitude anyway? Especially when your dad or John is around, you act like you run things around here." Stephie decided to call out his behavior. "Because I do.""Says the one who had to keep me trapped in my room just to feel like a man." Stephie fired, wanting nothing more than to ruffle his feathers and upset him for making that
The remainder of the week vanished in the blink of an eye. By the weekend Carter came to pay Stephie a visit at lunchtime, while the young Barlowe wasn't home. This had been planned on purpose by Jacob himself."How have you been Stephanie? I'm sorry for taking so long to do a follow up visit." Carter asked then apologized after she served him a cup of warm milk, just the way he liked it.Stephie took a seat across from Carter, while they spoke in the dining area."It's fine. I'm fine." Stephie shrugged."Are you eating well? Sleeping well?" Carter then questioned. "It would better if I was sleeping in my own bed, at my own place, but hey, beggars can't be choosers." Stephie replied honestly. Carter nodded, "I understand, but this really is one of the best options we could offer. Especially after what happened the fist night you were here." Carter pointed out in notion of the burglary."I'm gonna assume you had the police investigate." Stephie expressed."No." Carter admitted."Oh?"
When Jacob entered his condo that evening, he found that Stephie had respected his rule. His dinner was on the table, but she was nowhere to be found. With the day having been spent in and out of meetings, and heavy reviews of the Swanson proposal in between, Jacob didn't have the energy to be upset that he couldn't see Stephie after such a long day. Instead, he saw to going for his evening run, and upon his return, he reheated his food, then headed to his room for the night. In her own bedroom, Stephie cautiously listened for Jacob's door to close for the night before making her way to the kitchen for a light supper. He had cleaned his dishes and left no extra work for her. Stephie sighed. This wasn't so bad. She would just pretend that she was feeding a shy ghost. After finishing her supper, Stephie cleaned up and headed to her room. But as she was about to enter, she noticed that Jacob's light was still on. It was getting really late. Why was he still up? Leaning her head on th
When Jacob made it only a few minutes away from his condo, his phone dinged with a notification that the elevator to his place had been activated. Checking the notification, Jacob's pressures instantly rose, and with one harsh turn, Jacob rushed back to his building. And now, he found himself staring heavily at the one who he considered to be the most inconvenient troublemaker in the world, and she stared at the table. After being drained from the prolonged silence, Stephie rolled her eyes and crossed her arms while leaning back in her chair. Then she finally looked at Jacob. "So what do you have to say?" She asked with the most pompous tone ever. Jacob sighed. He was tired of her wit and tone, and yet it is the main thing which drew him to her. How could the most unattractive attribute of this girl be one of the main reasons why he smartly kept her close? "First, let's lose the attitude. This is going to be a civilized conversation. I'll start by saying I apologize for the offen
The 2:00 AM street sounds below filled Stephie's room, as she laid on her back, wide awake.Breathing softly in and out, her chest moved up and down, her abdomen seemingly caved in, as though her organs too rushed to rest on the mattress beneath her spine. After the whole supper ordeal with Jacob, Stephie ate her meal and washed the dishes, leaving the kitchen and dining area clean. Then, returning to her room, Stephie played a few games on her phone to let the meal settle in her stomach, and when she felt comfortable to lie down, she found that sleep wanted nothing to do with her. In fact, sleep was so far away, that her brain was now too preoccupied with the most recent memory she shared with Jacob. This is what she had been afraid of. He always got too close; In the car, in the kitchen, in the dining room... who's too say how much further he could go next time? And what was it about him and her crying? Stephie frowned. Was Jacob so dense to realize that he often triggered her wit
Stephie's ears buzzed as her eyes could focus on nothing more than the slight bounce of Jacob's pulse along the border of his neck. He swallowed softly, his Adam's apple bobbed, and suddenly her own throat felt parched. "Mmh?" Jacob hummed in question, and the baritone in his chest urged Stephie to grip the sink's edge even as her spine pushed against the metal, in an attempt to keep a modest amount of space between her person and his. What could she do? He was too close, and she couldn't move. In no way would this scenario end in her favor. Not if she added fuel to the fire. Jacob stared at Stephie's face, waiting patiently for her response. Being so close to her, he caught a faint trace of the dinner's aroma she had cook hanging on her hair, and his mouth was instantly salivated knowing that whatever she had cooked would be a treat. He also couldn't help but notice just how flawless the skin of her face was. Not one blemish in sight, except for a beauty mark just beneath her
