The hospital gate was opened as the siren sound blared torturously, resonating throughout the hospital. Patricia stood up abruptly, from where she was seating in the cubicle and rushed to get to the entrance door. The sound from the ambulance had always been a clarion call for Patricia and for people in her kind of job. As Patricia hastily walked towards the entrance door, two other ladies on blue scrubs followed her trail.
Patricia is a twenty-four years old woman. She is of average height, she has a dark straight hair which was always tied into a ponytail behind her head. She is light skinned, with chubby cheeks. She loved her job, not just because of the pay alone, but she had compassion on people, that compassion spurred her to go extra miles for her patients. She was a nurse in the federal teaching hospital.
“The victim is a teenage male” Nne, one of the ladies on blue scrubs that followed Patricia mouthed as she tried to catch up with Patricia, who was almost running to the door.
Patricia was a couple of inches to the door, when three paramedic staffs rolled a teenage boy in, the boy was covered with blood, his clothe, which appeared to be a school uniform, was also covered in blood, the injury was from his head.
The push and pull door bounced back to its normal position, as the paramedics passed through it with the stretcher.“He was involved in an accident, on his way back from school” one of the paramedics said, as they stopped in front of the three female nurses.
“Thank you, we’ll take it from here” Patricia took over the rolling bed “he needs to be taken to the ER” she rolled the bed, the tires made a squeaky, irritating sound, as they were rolled on the floor.
The boy appeared to be unconscious, as he was rolled on the bed, though his fingers fidgeted slowly. What looked like his school bag was beside him, it had blood stains. Patricia rolled the bed as fast as she could, eventually, they got to the Emergency room. They rolled the boy unto one of the numerous beds.
“One, two, three, go” Patricia called out, as each of the nurses raised the teenage boy from the bed, using the bed sheets he laid on.
Patricia used her fingers, as she slightly massaged around the wounded area on his head, it was a deep cut. The teenager had lost so much blood, he was pale already.
“Get me a couple gauze sponges, a pair of medical gloves, scissors, soft band balls, and forceps. I’ll need to dress his wound, after which we give him a pint of blood, for a start”. Patricia said, to one of the nurses, Nne, who was an intern.
“Ok ma” Nne hastily walked to get what she was asked to get.
In no time the Nne was back, she rolled trolley containing the medical kits, to the boys’ bedside. She placed them on table beside Patricia
“Thank you Nne” Patricia gave the nurse a welcoming smile.
“It’s my pleasure” Nne reciprocated the smile.
Patricia was through with dressing the teenager, he had a plaster over the wound on his head. The boy was then sedated. He laid down there, peacefully, with pint of blood, slowly dripping into his body.
“He’ll need to rest” Patricia walked out of the ward, with Nne following behind.
“Will he be fine?” Nne inquired, curiously, as rolled out the now empty bed, that was used to bring the teenage boy.
Patricia paused at the door post “Yes, sure he will. Thank God they brought him when they did. By the way, you did well today” Patricia rubbed Nne on the arm
“Thank you ma” Nne smiled.
“We’ll come back in an hour time, to examine how he is doing” Patricia walked away.
The morning light crawled into her room. Sleepily, she laid in her dreamy haze wondering about that thing she had always been wondering about these few days. Pushing back the covers, she felt the cool breeze caress her skin, rousing her into wakefulness. Opening her eyes, it landed on the old clock that hung above her dresser."Oh gosh am getting late for work" she practically screamed at herself, rushing to the bathroom to get ready for the day.~~~Patricia and Nne, entered the Emergency room, where the teenage boy laid. His eye lids slowly tore apart, his eyes accommodating the brightness that illuminated the white room, using his eye to scan the room, his pupils more dilated than usual.Patricia smiled “you are in the hospital you had an accident” saving him from the stress of pouring out the questions probably running through his head. The teenager wore a mask of worry on his face. Patricia and Nne both shared a gaze, worrie
“You are right, sorry for prying” Morris shrugged in response,“Give us a second Mr Morris” Dave stood up from his chair, having a pout on his face, “Patricia can I see you?” he asked, throwing an irritated look towards her, then he walked to the door, opened it, and walked outside.“please excuse me” Patricia said with a slight bow and scurried behind Dave.Morris just shrugged, as he was left alone in the Dave’s office. All he could think of was his son who was now said to have Amnesia. Was it total or partial? Would his be able to recognize him even tho things weren't rosy between them? He heaved a sigh as he buried his face in between his palm. Dave stood at the corridor, as Patricia walked up to him. “what did you think you are doing Patricia?” he asked her with a death glare. If looks could kill, Patricia would definitely have been six feet under by then. “I don’t understand sir, doing what?” she asked with an innocent but confused look,
“Good morning Morris” Patricia grinned at Morris, as she approached him sitting in the waiting room.“good morning nurse Patricia” Morris nodded, with a crooked smirk on his face “I will be back; I want to change into my scrubs” she hurried past Morris Morris smiled “I prefer you on mufti though” he raised the tone of his voice so Patricia would hear.Patricia smiled, but didn’t respond, as she walked into a room with the inscription ‘female dressing room’ atop the door…After some minutes passed, the dressing room’s door opened, and out came Patricia in her blue scrubs, with her hands in the pocket, she smiled as she walked back to the waiting room, to where Morris sat. “you're back into this scrub” Morris rubs his nose, as Patricia approached him“yes, I am” Patricia smiled at him.“good morning Nurse Patricia” an aged man rolled his oxygen tank, and a tube-like material in his nostrils, connected to the tank, throug
“what I’m I doing here?” the teenager was hyperventilating, with black look on his face. Doctor Dave stood beside the teenager; he had a dumbfounded look on his face. Nurse Nne was there too. She tried to inject the teenager with anesthesia“what are you injecting him with?” Patricia walked to Nne, and held her hands, stopping her from injecting the teenager.Dave gave Patricia a glowering look, but Patricia ignored him.“what is wrong with him?” Morris had a taut in his voice“I came to check on him, he was still sleeping, then I touched his arm, trying to check his pulse, then he woke, and started screaming, we’ve been trying to calm him down”Morris made an effort to move towards his son, but as he approached, his son became more scared, and drew back.Patricia noticed “stop” she told Morris, then she walked towards the boy“mom! Please help me” the boy called out, with a beatific expression on his face. There was
The door opened, revealing an adorable teenage girl, she tied her black curly hair in a bun. She smiled, lightly, revealing a pair of braces in her teeth. Then she walked in and closed the door behind her, Christopher’s eye gleamed with joy, as the teenage girl approached the bed, with some elegance in her walking steps, but worry on her face, she felt sorry for Christopher. Patricia was marveled as she watched the way Christopher’s mode changed, from being sober, to being so elated, she wondered who the girl was to Christopher. She slid into Christopher’s open arms, “I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner” the teenage girl mouthed. They both tightened their arms around each other, like prisoners of their own bodies. Then a wave of silence hit the room, for a couple of seconds. Untangling from their embrace, Christopher laid back fully on his bed.“you are here now that’s what matter, better late than never” Christopher smiled, as he held the teenage girls’ hand
At the cafeteria Morris and Patricia sat, taking a snack. They both faced each other, some other people were also seated in the cafeteria having a snack-break.“how is work today?” Morris said with a muffled gob, from the snack he had“work is fine, a little hiccups, but then it’s part of the job I signed up for, so it’s all good” Patricia tucked some strands of her hair behind her ear.“I’ve watched you closely with Doctor Dave, you two are always on each other’s nerves, not will to surrender to the other”“hearing his name alone, makes me want to shove a pole up his ass” Patricia jerked her already tight fist up. Damn that Doc always looking for the most annoying bones to pick. “why is it that way?” Morris asked, his voice laced with more curiosity. “it’s what we all go through in the medical field, the doctors always feel they are superior to other professions, so they feel they can boss us around, and expect utter reverence from us
There was a light knock-on doctor’s Dave’s door, “come in” Dave said, as he rand his hand through his hair. The door opened, as it revealed Patricia, she walked in, and closed the door“oh, it’s you” Dave sounded disappointed to see her “so what do you want?”“you didn’t…” Patricia took a deep breath, “I came to inform you that there would be a little celebration for Christopher, the teenage patient. I’ve informed all the other staffs, so I thought I should at least inform you before tomorrow”“at least in form me!” Dave’s demeanor changed “why I’m I just hearing about this? You informed all the staffs, and you told me last”“I didn’t think it was a big deal”“big deal! Did you put other patients into consideration? That this may make them uncomfortable, this is a hospital, not a club, for Christ sake” Dave slammed his hand on his desk“I’ve informed all the patients, so they are well informed sir”“it seems you have everything
It was ten-twenty-five AM, when Priscilla walked into Christopher’s room, he was lying on the bed, it had white sheets on, the bed squeaked, as Christopher tried to seat up.“your here early” Christopher was amused“yes I am” Priscilla smiled, then walked close to Christopher and held his hand, “as days turn to years, so many people come flooding into your life, each giving you a piece of what life is about, they all have a specific time-frame to be in your life, and once that time has elapsed, they leave, but the question is not how long a person stays in your life, what really matters is what was he/she able to do, while the stopwatch they had in your life ticked, that’s all that matters eventually, those little favors that a person does to another, they are the tires that keep life moving. The little time I have in your life, though it’s ticking out, I don’t know how long I have left, I want to make
