Melanie jolted out of her musings when she heard someone call out to her.
“Hmm? Yeah, what is it?” , She asked, clearing her throat and pausing slightly when she caught sight of the person speaking to her.“I’m sorry I startled you”, The guy said with a wide smile. She gawked at the young man that stood beside her in a grey turtleneck sweater and faded blue jeans. He was really handsome with his tanned skin, bright hazel eyes, golden hair that seemed to shine in the sunlight, toned athletic build and cute boyish grin that could make any girl swoon.“You really do know how to compliment someone, don’t you?”, He commented, flashing her a beautiful smile that exposed a set of pearly white teeth.Melanie looked at him in surprise, “What? What are you talking about?”.“You’ve been staring at me for quite some time now. It must be because of my good looks, right?”.Melanie rolled her eyes at him and gave him an unimpressed look.He laughed, taking a seat in one of the chairs behind the table she was cleaning. “Are you okay, though? Before I came up to you, you’ve been wiping the table for a good half hour”.“Please! It wasn’t that long and it was only because the table was filthy”.“I don’t think you’re supposed to say that regarding a table in an establishment you work in. Aren’t you afraid of what I’ll do?”.Melanie raised an eyebrow, “What are you going to do about it? Are you planning to report me to my boss? Or you’re going to stop coming here?”.“Depends. I’ll think about it”.“Please do. But while you’re still here, what would you like to order?”, She asked, pulling out a small notebook and a pen.“I don’t know. Do you have sandwiches?”.“That’s seventy percent of what we make and sell here. If you’re undecided, can I recommend our very regular cheese sandwich?”.“Alright”, He said, laughing. “One mocha latte for me too. Would you like one?”.Melanie blushed. “No thank you. Is there anything else you might…”.“ No fraternizing with the customers, Melanie. Get back to work”, Paul yelled from behind the counter.“I’m just taking his order”, Melanie yelled back, looking up to see Tara giving her the middle finger.Melanie ignored her and turned to meet the guy with a mock sigh. “Duty call, I suppose”.“Of course. I didn’t mean to delay you. I’m Liam by the way”.“Oh, right, I’m Melanie. Let me head back to go get that order of yours”.“Any chance at all that if I asked for your number you would be willing to give it to me?”, He asked with hopeful eyes.“Nope”, Melanie said, shooting it down immediately and walking away, feeling a little proud of herself.Just as she was returning with Liam’s order, she bumped into a familiar curvy redhead.“Leila? What are you doing here?”.“Hey now, I promised I’d drop by during my lunch break”.“Thanks for coming to check up on me. Take a seat over there and I’ll be with you shortly”.A moment later, she joined Leila at her table.“You look to be in a better mood than before. How’re you feeling?”.“Disappointed mostly but I’ll be fine, it’s not like it’s that big of a deal. If I don’t get it this time then I’ll just have to wait for another opportunity to present itself”.“That’s right. The last thing you need to do right now is give up. Anyway, you seemed awfully familiar with that guy over yonder when I came in”, Leila said, discreetly pointing at a guy some tables away from them and Melanie’s eyes followed.“Liam? He’s a cool guy and he’s really nice. We barely know each other , we just met today”.“Well, it was pretty obvious that he was hitting in you. He’s very good looking too and he has a nice body. Is it weird that I wonder what he looks like underneath all those clothes?”.“Leila!”, Melanie cautioned while looking around to see if anyone overheard them talking heat rushing up her cheeks. “You can’t say that about other people”.“Relax, no-one heard me. Why are you acting so bothered, it’s not like you don’t think it”.“Of course I didn’t. I don’t go around imagining cute guys nude”.“You should try it sometime, it’s fun”.“That’s harassment”.“Oh, come on, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind. Should I ask him?”.Melanie glared at her but before she could respond to her, see felt her cell phone chime in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw that it was an incoming call from her best friend, Erin.“Hey, babes”, Erin said as soon as she answered the call.“Hey”.“Oh. The fact that you’re not jumping for joy and screaming in my ear right now must mean that you didn’t get the job. I’m so sorry, baby”.“I mean, I don’t know if I got it or not but everyone else there looked like they were a lot better than I was so I don’t really have much hope regarding it”.“That means you still have a chance. I’d really love to come over and cheer you up right now but I’m swarmed at work right now and my boss is being a total…penis. Did you meet up with Leila?”“I did. She’s really nice. I can’t really say anything bad about her since she’s sitting right in front of me”, Melanie told her, smiling turning to look at Leila.Erin laughed. “Say hello to her for me. I’ll come over to your place to sleep over so you can tell me all about today when I get there. What snacks do you want?”.“Everything?”, Melanie said with an eye roll. Turning to Leila, she asked, “Do you have plans tonight? Erin and I are having a small sleepover”.“Sure, I’m down. Do I need to bring anything?”.“As much snacks as you can fit into your bag would be fine”, Melanie said and hung up her call after informing Erin that she had invited Leila.“Will there be booze?”.“Of course not, it s a week day and we all have work tomorrow morning”.Leila giggled. “I know, I’m kidding”. Looking at her wrist watch, she got up. “My break's almost over. You should get my number from Erin and text me your address later”.“Alright?”.“…She have such a weird smile, it seemed like she had it in the bag already. Maybe she knows one of the interviewers? What if she said something to them about me? We barely spoke but she didn’t seem to like me very much”, Melanie was saying, taking a large bite of the croissant she had gotten from the bakery a few blocks way from her apartment.“That would be quite stupid of her if she did that. And unprofessional too. I don’t think anyone would look kindly on anyone that tried to sabotage others”, Erin said ,tucking a strand of her hair behind her neck.“That would only make sender if she really doesn’t know anyone there. Besides. I don’t think they would hire me anyway. I heard a couple of them whispering about college degrees. I don’t think I stand a chance”.“I don’t think it works that way, hun. It’ll be fine. I already contacted someone else to see if they had an open spot in the place they worked in. I’ll let you know when they get back to me. It shouldn’t be too hard to fi
“Are you missing your beloved already?”, Lucas Stern asked, jabbing his friend in the ribs with the pen in his hand.Calvin Sinclair turned to glare at his closest friend. “What is wrong with you? What the hell did you do that for?”.Lucas ignored his icy glare as he joined him, placing his hands on the railing if the balcony that overlooked the brightly lit splendor of the big city.“Your sad look of pained longing was too much for me to bear and it appealed to my good heart so I thought to come out here and cheer you up”.“By stabbing me in the side with a pen?”, Calvin asked, acidly.“I wouldn’t exactly go so far as to call it stabbing though”, Lucas said and turned to him. “Why are you here anyway? You only come out when you’re worried or thing about something. Is it about Linda?”, He asked. They had become close friends when they were in elementary school since their families had close friendly relations and they moved in the same social circle. Lucas has found out about his
“So what’s this I’m hearing about a cute guy? “, Erin asked, wriggling her eyebrows as she sat cross legged on the sofa.“It’s nothing really. No one. Just some random guy I spoke to for a few minutes while I took his order. I think he said his name was Liam? I don’t know. He was really cute but I don’t think I’ll see him again”, Melanie said, feeling a little uneasy.“He might come by the restaurant again. He seemed like he was really into you”.“Whatever, really. Let’s talk about something else. I definitely wouldn’t be his type. He probably just spoke to me because he wanted to be polite. It didn’t look like he was flirting anyway”.“Sure”, Leila dragged out and turned to Erin, “What about you? Why did you have to work during your lunch break? Did anything happen? “.Melanie frowned. “Yeah, are you still having problems with your boss? “, She asked, remembering the complaints she had made a couple of days ago.“You’re having issues with your boss? From what I heard, he's quit
“So, what are you going to do about this Linda lookalike? Are you going to give her the job?”, Lucas asked, raising an eyebrow.“I don’t think so. I spoke with the interviewers and according to them, she seemed to be quite intelligent and passionate but she isn’t as qualified as some of the others that applied alongside her”.“Does that matter? You’re the boss here. You can pick and hire whosoever you damn well please. Why are you pretending to be modest?”.Calvin rolled his eyes. “I’m only interested in doing what’s right for the company and it doesn’t make any sense to choose her over all the others when she’s the one with the least qualifications”.“That still changes nothing. She’s working directly for you. If she’s so terrible, then you can just easily fire her. If you really need a reason, give her the job because she looks like Linda”, He glanced at his friend’s face and scoffed. “Oh, don’t give me that dirty look. Admit that you’re curious about their uncanny resemblance.
“Perfect”, Melanie whispered as she glanced lovingly at the delicious breakfast she had prepared and finished setting on the dining table. This was a couple of days since the sleepover and she had continued working at the small restaurant as a waitress waiting for a call or an email from the company.Grinning, she knelt on the floor and poured milk into Penny’s bowl and emptied a small can of cat food into the other bowl beside it. Her phone rang as she got up and dusted the lint from her oversized argyle angora sweater and baby blue denim trousers.“Hey, baby”, She said with a smile.“Good morning to you too, babe”, Erin said over the phone.“Shouldn’t you be at work by now?”, Melanie asked, glancing at the grandfather clock that stood in a corner of the living room. “It’s almost 9am”.“I’m there already. Just getting ready fro another day of being stressed out while being ignored by my boss for no reason. After he confronted me the day before about being a 'spy' for his pare
As the deputy CEO of his family’s large company, Calvin had been dreading the dinner that would be had after the stakeholders meeting all day. His palms were sweaty, and his stomach was in knots. He hated these kinds of events- the ones where he was required to schmooze with potential investors and valuable clients, pretending to be interested in their bland conversation while all he really wanted was to go home and lie in bed.But his best friend Lucas had convinced him to come to dinner at a small restaurant they had been to once before, claiming that the food was incredible and the atmosphere was inviting. Calvin trusted Lucas’ judgment, so he reluctantly agreed. Thomas had never had time to visit or had any liking for sugary pastries and tiny restaurants. But on this particular evening, the smell of freshly baked apple pie wafting through the air drew him towards the small restaurant in the downtown area. When they arrived, they were welcomed by the sound of clinking glasses a
Melanie laughed along with her friends who sat around the counter of the little kitchen in her home. “Mel, dear. I think I just saw the mail man drop off some letters in the box. Could you please bring them in?”, Her grandmother's voice came from her bedroom right next to where they were.“Sure, Nana” , Melanie answered and excused herself to go check out what letters had been stuffed violently into their tiny mailbox. As she gathered up the letters, a particular logo on one of the envelopes caught her eye and her breath caught in her throat. It was the logo of the company she had interviewed for over a week ago and was still awaiting a response and though she hadn’t felt much hope, her heart was now viciously pounding against her chest threatening to burst through her body. They had sent her a letter. Did that mean that they wanted to hire her? That had to be why. Companies didn’t send envelopes to applicants to reject them. They could just as easily done it over the phone or i
Melanie had always prided herself on being a hard worker. She had done well in school and had impressed her previous employers with her dedication and efficiency. But there was something about starting a new job that always made her nervous. She had just landed a position as the personal assistant to the deputy CEO of a large corporation and she couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated. As she sat in the boardroom on her first day, listening to the man beside her explain her new duties, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. She had been looking forward to starting this new job, but now that she was here, she wasn’t sure that she was ready for it.That’s when she looked up and locked eyes with a man standing in the doorway. He was exceptionally good looking, with chiseled features and piercing blue eyes. Melanie felt her heart skip a beat as the man stepped into the room and approached her. Her heart began to beat a little faster as she realized that he was the man she had
