Alessandro’s POV

The message burned in my pocket like a live coal.

A blurry image. Me. Shirtless. With Micah.

I couldn’t breathe. Who sent it? I looked around to see if there was anyone smirking or way too interested in what was happening, but there was none. Just people laughing and toasting with their champagne glasses like nothing was up.

I wanted to scream.

I thought about telling Micah. But his smirking face and shrugs came to mind, and I dead the thought down. If he thought it was a game, he’d treat it like one. This wasn’t a game. This was my life. My future.

I continued my walk with heavy steps.

The ballroom had gold chandeliers dripping light onto polished marble floors. The tables were dressed in white silk, each with a rose and crystal glass. The room was glowing. Cameras flashed as the elite of New York poured in politicians, billionaires, CEOs. Laughter bounced off the walls like music.

Sandra who is the star of the ballroom stood at the centre wearing a stunning emerald gown that fitted her. Her hair was flawless and her smile bright. A perfect mask. Everyone was doting on her as she raised her glass to those congratulating her, while they whispered about how lucky I was.

Lucky.

I felt trapped.

Then there was Micah. Across the room wearing a dark suit with a black tie. The picture of elegance and danger rolled into one. He did not smile for the cameras, but his eyes, his damn eyes, kept finding me. Taunting.

I looked away first. Of course I did.

The whispers started near the champagne tower. Two women in sequins leaned close, voices sharp as knives.

“They say his father forced a marriage once before.”

“Another merger, another sacrifice. These families never change.”

My hands curled around my glass. My throat burned. Were they talking about me? About my father? About how I was just another pawn?

I tried to shake it off. Then chaos arrived.

A man ran through the double doors with a flushed face. Sandra’s ex. I knew him from a photo I had seen once; a tall, scruffy mess in a crumpled suit, clearly drunk. He shoved past waiters, nearly knocking over the champagne tower, and pointed straight at Micah.

“You!” His voice trembled. “You think you are better than me?”

The room went still.

Micah raised his glass slowly. “Clearly, yes.”

Nervous laughter shook the room, but the ex was not laughing. He suddenly lunged at Micah, grabbing him by the collar, and gasps echoed around the room.

I froze. My body screamed to move, to stop it, but Sandra slipped her arm through mine, holding me back like a chain.

“Stay out of it,” she whispered, too calm.

Micah did not flinch. He bent towards the man’s ear and whispered something sharp. Whatever it was, it made the ex’s face crumple with rage. He swung a fist.

Micah caught it. Effortlessly.

“You are boring me,” Micah said with no emotion as he twists the man’s wrist until he screamed. “Leave. Before I break you in front of everyone.”

Security rushed in, dragging the ex out, kicking and cursing. The crowd erupted into nervous chatter again, pretending nothing happened. But my heart hammered against my ribs. Micah’s eyes lifted across the room, straight to me. And for a split second, I saw it. Not the smirk. Not the taunt. But something raw. Protective.

I looked away again.

“Alessandro.”

The voice made me spin. Nicole. My best friend. My anchor. She wore a sleek silver dress, hair pinned back, smile soft but guarded.

“You’re late,” I muttered, too shaken to hide it.

“Traffic,” she said, slipping beside me. Her eyes scanned the room, too quickly, before landing on me again. “You look… tired.”

“That’s one word for it.”

She moved closer, dropping her voice. “Be careful with this family, Ale. They’re hiding more than you think.”

My blood ran cold.

I gripped her arm. “What do you mean? Do you know something?”

She shook her head. “No. Not yet. I just do not like how they move and how they watch you.”

Her eyes flicked toward Sandra, then Micah. Then back to me.

Before I could press, someone else cut in.

“Alessandro.”

Micah. Of course.

He pulled me away, more like dragged me away, from Nicole, into a shadowed corner not far from the balcony. The way his hand gripped my wrist was enough to set my nerves on fire.

“You’re jumpy,” he said smoothly.

“Gee, I wonder why,” I hissed. “Maybe because your family is insane? Maybe because your sister’s ex just tried to knock you out in front of three hundred guests?”

Micah tilted his head, studying me. “You are not worried about me. You are worried about yourself. What is going on?”

I glared. “Stop poking.”

He leaned closer, so close I could feel his breath. “Everything about you is my business.”

“Stop.” My chest heaved. “You don’t get to say that. You don’t get to corner me. You don’t get to…”

“Do what? Do you want me to remind you of last night?” His eyes flicked down my body, slow and deliberate. “How badly you wanted me… and how badly you still do?”

“Shut up.” My voice shaking. I pushed him by his chest, but he did not move.

“You can lie to them,” he whispered, “but you cannot lie to me.”

My entire body trembled. Part anger. Part truth. Mostly fear.

“Let me go,” I said.

Micah stepped back, finally, but his eyes stayed locked on mine. “One day, Alessandro. You’ll stop running.”

I staggered back into the light, pretending my lungs weren’t on fire. Sandra glided toward me, perfect and unreadable, slipping her arm through mine again. Cameras flashed. People clapped. The image of a golden couple.

My phone buzzed.

I glanced down. Another message.

This time, the photo was not blurry.

Crystal clear. Me and Micah and in bed. Sheets tangled. Skin flushed. Faces unmistakable.

The caption:

“Congratulations on your engagement. Wonder what they’ll say when this leaks?”

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

My chest caved in.

Someone wasn’t just watching. Someone was waiting.

And I was running out of time.

  • Straight Until Him   After the Storm

Alessandro’s POVMicah’s room was too quiet. The type of silence that did not imply peace, just weariness masquerading to be peace. He sat at his table, fixated on the slight vapor emerging from his unconsumed coffee. I rested against the wall, hands hidden in my pockets.“How long have you been sitting there?”He did not look up. “Since morning, I think. Time has been moving strange lately.”“Understandable,” I muttered, stepping closer. “It has been a long week.”He finally turned toward me, eyes heavy but alert. “Yeah. Long and ugly.”I sank onto the edge of his bed. “How is Sandra?”Micah let out a slow breath, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “She is calmer. The doctors said she is cooperating. She remembers everything now… regrets it all too.”“That is something,” I said quietly.“She asked about you.”I hesitated. “What did she say?”“That she is sorry. Again. And that she does not want to see you until she is… better.”“Good. I do not want to see her either.”Micah gave a faint

  • Straight Until Him   Shattered Steps

Sandra’s POV“I told them the entire story.” I spoke softly, stepping out of the questioning room with Micah, my wrists quivering and shuddering though they were not cuffed anymore.“You did just fine,” Micah uttered tenderly, his hand stroking my back as if I could shatter or collapse. Who knows maybe both. Maybe I already had. Then my eyes met Alessandro’s. He was positioned there, statuesque, frosty, expressionless as always. However, at the moment his glance settled on me, I halted. For the very first time in a long while, I felt diminutive.I knew he was not here for me but for Micah.“I…” My voice cracked. “I am sorry. For everything. For wrecking your life, for sullying your reputation, for all of it.”Alessandro’s gaze widened, merely a glimmer but sufficient to penetrate me. He did not speak a word.“I mean it,” I went on, my throat burning. “You never deserved me… none of you did. I was cruel, I was selfish, I…”Micah squeezed my arm. “Sandra.”“No, let me finish,” I said q

  • Straight Until Him   Between Shadows and Truth

Sandra’s POVThe room is too bright, too clean. I hate it. The table feels cold under my palms, the officers staring at me like I am a prey and he is the predator. I am a little bit relieved because Micah is here.“Name?”Name? Why is he asking for my name? Who does not know my name? Is this part of the procedures or mockery?“You know my name. Everyone knows my name. Sandra Duvall, daughter of the great man who thinks he is God.”“Ms. Duvall, we need calm answers.”“Ms. Duvall? Call me Sandra and just so you know, I am calm.” My laugh echoes sharp. “Can you not hear how calm I am?”“Do you understand why you are here?”“Uhn?" I inclined my head. "Because I colluded with Marcus or because I stabbed my brother or both. Who knows?” I smirk, then glance at Micah. “Oh! Right, big brother? I gave you a little love mark.”Micah leans forward, voice low. “Sandra, this is a serious matter, do not joke about this. Tell them the truth.”“The truth is boring,” I whisper, drumming my nails on the

  • Straight Until Him   The Van Ride

Micah’s POVHer curses filled the van, sharp as broken glass, but I did not flinch. I just watched her, steady, letting her venom run its course.“You always were loud,” I said softly. She whipped her head toward me, wild-eyed. “Do not you start with me. Do you not sit there and act like you are better…”“I am not better. Just older. Do you remember summers at the lake?”Her breath caught. “What… what the hell does that matter now?”“The pier,” I whispered. “You love running so much that you used to sprint ahead, always jumping in first like an Olympics gold medal sprinter, splashing me like it was your life’s mission. You laughed so hard you could not breathe. Remember?”Her jaw worked, but no sound came.“You laughed so much back in those days... Oh! Yes, and the ice cream truck,” I went on. “You would grab two cones… chocolate for you, vanilla for me… and say I owed you forever, that is after you eat from my cone." I chuckled a little. "You still have my IOU, you know that little s

  • Straight Until Him   The Last Performance

Alessandro’s POVThe police shoved Sandra into the van, but her scream tore the air apart. Cameras flashed like a storm. Then suddenly; she slipped free, bolting like a wild thing. And bam, she headed straight for Micah. Here we go again, I could not help but think so. I think Micah knew this would happen because he was looking at her with this expression that reads: Be quick with whatever you have to say.“Micah!” Sandra shrieked, her voice ragged, broken. “You did this! You ruined me!”Reporters just about trampled each other, yelling over the flashing cameras. The guards were tripping over their own feet, scrambling after her, but no chance; she was gone, wild, probably running on pure adrenaline and whatever storm was brewing inside her.“Stay back!” Mr. Duvall; her father shouted, rushing forward.Sandra spun on him, eyes blazing. “You? You spineless coward! You are no father. You have never been! You let me rot while you stuffed your face with power and deals. Look at you now; a

  • Straight Until Him   Tears on the Patio

Micah’s POVAlessandro’s mother literally tugged me away, her grip on my shoulder completely mild, like I was some dainty vessel about to break if she gripped too firmly. Out on the patio, she sat me in a chair and began stroking my back, like I was a six year old who had face planted off his bike. God, I hated it. Hated the way I was bawling, full on ugly crying, like a grown man who had lost every ounce of dignity. But I could not stop. My chest felt hollow, my throat raw, and my hands trembling.“I can’t believe it,” I whispered between broken breaths. “The rumors Alessandro told me… the ones about my father… they are true. He actually...” My words cracked apart, drowned in another round of tears. She did not utter a word, just kept patting me, letting me collapse against the chair. After some time; who even knows how long, I noticed Alessandro right there, close enough that I could actually feel his warmth. Grounded me, honestly. His mother rose, straightened her attire like it wa
