The Assistant

BRIANNA'S P.O.V

I paced back and forth beside my car, I had been waiting for almost thirty minutes in front of the Denver mansion for my best friend Cara, this wasn't the first time Cara made us late, it would have been the first time if she came out on time, times like this made me feel like a driver and not a friend.

I stopped pacing. Finally, she came out of the mansion looking as pretty as ever, her blonde wavy hair bounced as she sashayed. A maid followed behind her carrying her bag.

"Brianna darling, you look dashing today", this was her way of saying 'I'm sorry for making us late' Cara had a problem with saying sorry, the problem was, she couldn't say it, she never said it.

"Thanks, Cara, here's your coffee", I handed her the coffee in my hand and collected her bag from the maid.

"Bree this isn't hot, you know I don't like cold coffee," she said as she tossed the cup away.

"Sorry, but you wasted a lot of time, there's no way the coffee would still have been hot, now please can you get into the car let's go to school, we are already late", I opened the car door and got into the driver's seat.

"Don't give me orders", She slammed the door of the car as she got in.

I'm sure you're thinking that we don't seem like best friends, we probably seem like a boss and her assistant, the thing is when I was 10 years old my dad was about to lose his job, he was the only breadwinner in our family at the moment and my little sister was diagnosed with an illness, his boss was Cara's dad so I begged Cara to talk to her dad but she had a condition that I become her best friend and do whatever she says I should do, I agreed and my dad did not lose his job, her demands were sometimes unreasonable like when we were 13 I had a crush on a boy and Cara also liked the boy, she told me to stop talking to him and when I refused, I got home to meet my dad jobless, ever since that day, I knew that to keep my family away from poverty I had to keep on obeying Cara.

We walked into school, Cara was staring at her phone doing something on I*******m, while I walked beside her carrying her bag and my books.

They were heavy.

"Can you Please carry your bag today, my books are really heavy, and I didn't bring a bag", I complained to Cara, she acted like she didn't hear me and kept on staring at her phone.

"Cara... Aah" I bumped into someone and all my books fell on the floor.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you", I said to the person I bent down and so did the person, to pick my books.

I looked up to see who the person was.

Samuel Russo.

He wasn't exactly the most popular boy in school but he was one of the most handsome, he was on the basketball team, he had blonde hair slicked back, green eyes, and a chiseled chin.

He was also looking at me when I looked at him, I could feel the butterflies in my stomach.

Our eyes met and it stayed that way for seconds. It felt captivating, his green eyes sparkled and in a way, it drew me in, made me want to know more about him.

"Bree we're gonna be late for class", Cara rudely interrupted.

We gathered all the books and stood up.

"I'm guessing, you're Bree?", He asked

" Brianna " I replied

"I'm Samuel"

" I know who you are, everyone knows who you are", I regretted it immediately after I said it.

" Oh okay then, be more careful next time", he handed me the books and walked away.

I stood there smiling like a twelve-year-old who just got their first kiss, speaking of first kisses, I haven't had that yet.

"Oh my that was Samuel Russo, the Samuel Russo, Isn't he so cute, we would make a cute couple, don't you think so, Bree", Cara sang as we continued to walk.

'Here we go again' I thought to myself.

As we entered the class, I saw a familiar face sitting with an empty seat beside him. He noticed me and smiled. I smiled too but before I could get to the empty seat beside him, Cara said she'll sit there and I let her.

"Hello class, welcome back to school, I trust that you all had a wonderful break, but now that you are back, it's time to get serious, I have prepared a group project for you, I have grouped you all into groups of two", Mrs. Esther said.

She started calling out all the groups but I only cared to hear Cara's name and I.

My fingers crossed that I would get paired with a certain someone.

"Cara Denver and Mathew Apollo '' the teacher read out loud.

I could feel Cara's anger from where I sat, Matthew Apollo was one of the nerdiest kids in the school.

Meanwhile, Matthew looked happy.

The teacher continued calling out names until I heard mine and a big smile appeared on my face.

"Brianna Andrews and Samuel Russo"

I turned to look at Samuel, he also looked pleased with a little smile on his face, he saw me looking at him and winked, I looked away, trying to hide my blush.

" For this project I want you all to talk about an important part of history, explain it, say why it's important and create a presentation to explain it, is that understood" Mrs. Esther explained.

"yes", the class chorused,

"It will be due next week, any questions?"

Cara raised her hands, Mrs. Esther called on her.

"Can we switch partners?" she asked.

Poor Mathew, he looked so sad.

"No miss Denver you have to make do with the partner I gave you"

"But Bree wants to switch partners with me", she whined.

What!!! I did not want to switch with her.

"I said no and if you or anyone here has a problem with that you can follow me to the principal's office" Mrs. Esther snapped, that shut Cara up thankfully.

Mrs. Esther went on to brief us on some things in history.

**************"***********

Classes were finally over and it was time to go home. I was waiting by my car ready to go home. The only problem was Cara was nowhere in sight. There had been times that I would wait for her and then find out that she had gotten a ride from a guy. I hoped this wasn't one of the times.

"Hey" I heard someone call me and looked to see who.

My face brightened as I saw him,

Samuel Russo.
