(Lyra's POV)

"You're not supposed to look at him, Thorne. Wolves like you don't get to look."

Marcus Reyes said it low, almost bored, the way you'd remind a child not to touch a hot stove. I kept my eyes on the floor tiles I was scrubbing and said nothing, because saying anything back was how Omegas ended up on kitchen duty for a month instead of a week.

The Ashwood pack house smelled like woodsmoke and roasting meat and, underneath that, like the particular tension of a pack counting down to a wedding nobody wanted. Seven days until Alpha Kaelan Ashwood mated Selene Voss and ended a border war with a signature written in a bonding mark. Seven days, and every wolf in the house had an opinion about it they were dying to share with someone lower ranked than themselves.

I had opinions too. I kept them where I kept everything: buried, behind nine years of practice.

"Faster," Marcus said, and walked off to go make someone else's day worse.

I'd been nine years old when I came to this house with nothing but my name, and my name had been enough to get me spat on in the yard before I'd even unpacked. Thorne. The pack that sold out Ashwood hunting grounds to human hunters and burned for it. That was the story. I didn't remember enough of the actual night to argue with it: smoke, my mother's hands shoving me into a hollow log, a silence afterward that swallowed everything I used to know. I just remembered growing up inside a story that had already decided what I was before I could decide anything for myself.

I finished the tile floor and stood, wiping my hands on an apron that had been someone else's twice before it was mine, and that was when the air in the corridor changed.

I felt it before I understood it: a pressure drop, like the moment before lightning, my pulse jumping to match a rhythm that wasn't mine. My wolf, who mostly stayed quiet and tired these days, sat up inside my chest like she'd been struck.

Alpha Kaelan Ashwood turned the corner.

He wasn't looking for me. I want to be clear about that, because everything that came after got twisted into a story about fate finding us, and it wasn't that clean. He was walking fast, mid conversation with Marcus, jaw tight the way it got when the word Voss came up in a sentence he didn't choose. He was tall in the way that made rooms rearrange themselves around him, dark hair, a scar along his jaw that every pack rumor had a different origin story for, and eyes that were, right then, the color of a normal man's: brown, tired, human looking.

Then he saw me.

His eyes went gold.

Not flickered. Went. Amber gold, wolf bright, right there in a public corridor with Marcus three feet away, and I felt the pull hit me like a hand closing around my sternum and squeezing. Every instinct I owned screamed one word, over and over, in a language older than the one I spoke out loud.

Mine. Mine. Mine.

I stopped breathing. He stopped walking. Marcus's voice trailed off mid sentence, and for one endless second the entire corridor held still around two wolves whose bond had no legal right to exist.

"Lyra Thorne," Kaelan said. Not a question. Like he was testing whether my name in his mouth would make the feeling in his chest less impossible.

I made myself look away first, because looking away first was the only power I had left. "Alpha," I said, and I made my voice as flat and small as nine years of training had taught me to make it, and I walked past him down the corridor with my heart going like a war drum and his gaze burning a line down my spine the entire way.

Behind me, I heard Marcus say, very quietly, "Kaelan. Tell me that wasn't what it looked like."

I didn't hear the answer. I didn't need to. I already knew what it looked like, because I could still feel it clawing under my ribs, demanding I turn around.

It looked like the single most dangerous thing that had ever happened to me.

I made it exactly to the end of the corridor, around the corner, out of sight, and then I stopped, pressed my back to the wall, and let myself shake for four full seconds, because that was all I was going to allow myself.

A mate bond. To the Alpha. A week before his mating ceremony to someone else. With my name.

Thorne women didn't get mate bonds to Ashwood Alphas. They got funerals.

I was still standing there when Briar found me, took one look at my face, and went pale.

"What happened," she said. Not "what's wrong." She already knew something had.

I opened my mouth to lie to her, the way I lied to everyone, the way I'd built an entire personality out of telling people nothing was wrong.

"I think," I said instead, my voice cracking on it, "I just got myself killed."

Somewhere down the corridor, a door slammed, and I heard Damon Ashwood's voice, the retired Alpha, Kaelan's father, a man who never raised his voice for anything, rise into something close to a shout.

That was the first time I understood that whatever had just happened in that corridor, it had frightened Damon Ashwood far more than it had frightened me.

And I did not yet know why.

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Tell me the token is a forgery, Father. Tell me now, before I say the word out loud, because once I say it, I cannot take it back."My father did not look up from the teapot. Dawn crept gray across his study, over the maps and the old weapons on the walls, over the empty chair where my mother used to read. He poured slowly, steadily, and set a cup in front of me as if I had come for breakfast."Sit," Damon said."I will stand.""You are your mother's son. She never sat when she was angry either." He lifted his own cup and sipped. "Show me."I set the brass token on the desk between us. It clicked against the wood, small and ugly. He glanced at it for exactly one heartbeat, and I watched his eyes, because I had spent twenty six years learning to read this man, and I saw nothing. Not fear. Not surprise. It was like watching a locked door."A cheap trick," he said. "Anyone with a file and a steady hand can carve a mark. Half the traders on the southern road forge my

Lyra Thorne's POV"Look at her eyes, Kaelan. Look closely." Thane coughed, and blood ran into his gray beard. "Damon told us the fire took every Thorne. Yet here she stands, breathing, and I am the one who gets to die tonight."The north ridge smelled of frost and pine sap and something metallic underneath. Thane lay against a split boulder with a silver dart buried deep in his shoulder, and the skin around it had already turned a sick, shining gray. Marcus stood over him with a blade drawn. Kaelan stood beside me, so close that his heat pressed against my arm, and I hated how much I needed it."Who fired the dart?" Kaelan asked."Someone who does not like loose ends." Thane laughed again, and it turned into a wet cough. "Someone who was standing right behind me a minute ago. Ask your enforcers how a stranger walks past twelve wolves.""He did not walk past us," Marcus said. "Two of my men saw a cloak go uphill. They followed. Nobody has come back."I crouched beside Thane, and the co

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Lyra!"Her name tore out of me the moment I realized she was gone from the war tent, and I lost sight of her for four minutes between the canvas flap and the tree line, four minutes that felt like something being carved directly out of my chest one slow inch at a time. I did not remember crossing the camp. I only remembered the moment the trees opened and the world narrowed to exactly one thing.I broke through the last line of pines and what I found on the other side stopped me cold. She was standing three feet from Titus Crane, alone, unarmed, and very deliberately not running, her spine straight in a way that told me she had chosen to stand there, not been caught there."Think about my offer," Titus was saying to her, quiet, unhurried, the way a man speaks when he already believes he has all the time he needs, his voice carrying easily across the clearing despite its softness. "You have more time than you believe. Not as much as you would like.""Get away from

Lyra Thorne's POV"Loose ends bleed first."I read the three words scrawled across the parchment out loud, and the moment they left my mouth my stomach dropped straight through the floor of Selene's room. The note had been sitting on her windowsill for less than an hour, and it already felt like it had been sitting there for years, the ink somehow darker than any ink had a right to be."No signature," I said, setting the parchment back down with hands that were not quite steady, my own bandaged wrists a fresh reminder of exactly how literally Corwin meant things like that. "He did not need one."Selene sat on the edge of her bed, arms wrapped around herself, the composure I had watched her wear like armor for months finally cracking at the edges, her shoulders drawn in tight as though she were trying to take up as little space in the room as possible. "I keep reading it and expecting it to say something different," she said. "It never does."I picked the note back up and turned it tow

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 48

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Selene is unharmed."I said it before he could ask, before he could pretend he cared about the answer for the right reasons, my voice cutting flat across the cedar and old parchment smell of my father's study, a smell I hated that some small foolish part of me still found comforting after everything. "Whoever Corwin sent got close enough to leave a warning on her windowsill and nothing more. This time."Damon did not look up from the papers on his desk, and something about his stillness told me he already knew more than he was saying, the same stillness he had worn for seventeen years while an entire pack's murder sat quietly on his conscience. The fire behind him had burned low, throwing more shadow than light across the shelves of ledgers that lined the walls, records of a pack he had built and, I was beginning to understand, quietly poisoned at its foundation. "Corwin was always careful," he said. "He would not risk exposure over a warning that accomplishes no

Lyra Thorne's POV"Silver burns take three days to fully close," Rhea said, wrapping clean linen around my forearm with the brisk efficiency of a woman who had done this a hundred times before, in worse rooms, for worse reasons. "You will not stop moving for three days. I already know that about you."My wrists were still raw beneath her hands, an hour after Kaelan carried me out of that stone room, and I welcomed the sting of the salve, because it was easier to feel than the fear still sitting cold and heavy in my chest. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Corwin's face in the firelight, patient and unbothered, like burning my family down had cost him nothing at all. The tent around us smelled of dried herbs and tallow candle, warm and close, and somewhere outside I could hear Marcus's enforcers moving in the practiced, quiet rhythm of a camp bracing itself for something."You know me too well for someone I only met four months ago," I said, and it came out lighter than I felt, which w
