(Kaelan's POV)

"Tell me you didn't just scent bond to a Thorne in the middle of my corridor."

My father didn't yell often. He'd trained that out of himself decades ago, the same way he'd trained fear out of his voice and grief out of his face. So when Damon Ashwood's words came out sharp enough to cut, I understood exactly how much trouble I was in before he finished the sentence.

"I don't control my wolf's reaction to a mate bond, Father. You know that better than anyone."

"I know," he said, "that a mate bond to that girl will end your title, end this pack's alliance with the Voss line, and possibly end this territory's ability to survive the next six months. Do you understand what you're describing to me right now?"

I did. That was the problem.

I'd walked that corridor a thousand times without noticing Lyra Thorne, the same way I hadn't noticed most of the Omega staff, not out of cruelty, just the particular blindness of a man carrying a whole pack's survival on his shoulders, who doesn't have room left to see individual people. And then I'd turned a corner and my entire chest had rearranged itself around a girl scrubbing floor tile, and every instinct I owned had started screaming her name like it was the only word left in the world.

I hadn't chosen it. That was the part my father refused to hear.

"The law is the law," he said. "No Ashwood Alpha mates outside a recognized bloodline. The Thorne name lost its recognition the night that pack burned. You know why."

"I know the story," I said carefully.

Something moved behind my father's eyes, there and gone so fast I told myself later I'd imagined it. "The story is the truth, Kaelan. Don't let one Omega's face make you forget that."

"I'm mating Selene Voss in seven days," I said. "Nothing about my wedding has changed."

"Good," my father said, and for a moment I thought that was the end of it, until he added, quieter, almost to himself, "Because if it does, I will handle it. The way it was handled before."

I should have asked him what that meant. I've replayed that conversation more times than I can count, wondering what would have changed if I'd pushed instead of walking away to find Marcus and pretend the day was normal. But I was twenty six years old and exhausted and seven days from a wedding I didn't want, and I let it go, because that was easier than looking directly at what my father had just admitted to.

Marcus caught up to me in the west hall, arms crossed, wearing the expression he reserved for telling me things I didn't want to hear.

"That was not subtle," he said.

"I'm aware."

"Your eyes went gold in a public corridor, Kaelan. In front of at least six witnesses. By tonight it'll be in front of sixty."

"I said I'm aware."

"Then you're also aware what the council does with a confirmed forbidden bond." Marcus's voice dropped, not unkind, just precise, because precision was the only language he trusted. "You lose the title. She loses considerably more than that."

That stopped me cold. "What does that mean?"

"It means the law doesn't just end your claim to Alpha," Marcus said. "It labels the bloodline responsible for the violation a continuing threat to pack stability. Read the old text sometime, if your father ever lets you near it. It's not gentle."

I thought about Lyra's face in that corridor, the second before she'd looked away, the flat, careful blankness she'd folded over whatever had actually been happening underneath it, like she'd had a lifetime of practice hiding exactly this kind of feeling. I thought about nine years of a girl learning to disappear inside my own pack house, and a law with her family's name burned into the reason for its existence, and I felt something shift in my chest that had nothing to do with mate bonds and everything to do with the sudden, uncomfortable sense that I had never once asked why that law existed at all. I had just assumed my father had good reasons. Ashwood Alphas were raised to assume that.

"Move the wedding up," I said instead of answering him.

Marcus blinked. "What?"

"If I marry Selene fast enough, this stops being a story anyone can tell." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Talk to the Voss envoy tonight. I want the ceremony inside two weeks instead of six."

"And the girl?"

"Reassign her," I said, and it cost me more than I expected to say it, some new, unfamiliar ache opening up under the words. "Somewhere far from the pack house. Somewhere I won't..." I stopped.

Marcus watched me for a long moment. "Somewhere you won't see her," he finished, quiet, almost gentle for him. "Kaelan. That's not going to make a mate bond stop existing. You know that."

"It'll make it manageable."

"It'll make it worse," Marcus said. "But it's your call. You're the Alpha."

He said it like a warning, not a compliment, and he was already walking away to do what I'd asked before I could take it back. I stood alone in the west hall with a wedding date I'd just accelerated by a month and a pull in my chest that had gotten worse, not better, the instant I'd said the word reassign, like my own wolf understood exactly what I was trying to do and was already furious about it.

Behind me, at the far end of the corridor, my father's study door was still closed. I found myself staring at it, turning over a sentence he hadn't meant to say out loud.

The way it was handled before.

I told myself it meant nothing. I told myself a lot of things that week.

None of them turned out to be true.

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Tell me the token is a forgery, Father. Tell me now, before I say the word out loud, because once I say it, I cannot take it back."My father did not look up from the teapot. Dawn crept gray across his study, over the maps and the old weapons on the walls, over the empty chair where my mother used to read. He poured slowly, steadily, and set a cup in front of me as if I had come for breakfast."Sit," Damon said."I will stand.""You are your mother's son. She never sat when she was angry either." He lifted his own cup and sipped. "Show me."I set the brass token on the desk between us. It clicked against the wood, small and ugly. He glanced at it for exactly one heartbeat, and I watched his eyes, because I had spent twenty six years learning to read this man, and I saw nothing. Not fear. Not surprise. It was like watching a locked door."A cheap trick," he said. "Anyone with a file and a steady hand can carve a mark. Half the traders on the southern road forge my

Lyra Thorne's POV"Look at her eyes, Kaelan. Look closely." Thane coughed, and blood ran into his gray beard. "Damon told us the fire took every Thorne. Yet here she stands, breathing, and I am the one who gets to die tonight."The north ridge smelled of frost and pine sap and something metallic underneath. Thane lay against a split boulder with a silver dart buried deep in his shoulder, and the skin around it had already turned a sick, shining gray. Marcus stood over him with a blade drawn. Kaelan stood beside me, so close that his heat pressed against my arm, and I hated how much I needed it."Who fired the dart?" Kaelan asked."Someone who does not like loose ends." Thane laughed again, and it turned into a wet cough. "Someone who was standing right behind me a minute ago. Ask your enforcers how a stranger walks past twelve wolves.""He did not walk past us," Marcus said. "Two of my men saw a cloak go uphill. They followed. Nobody has come back."I crouched beside Thane, and the co

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 50

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Lyra!"Her name tore out of me the moment I realized she was gone from the war tent, and I lost sight of her for four minutes between the canvas flap and the tree line, four minutes that felt like something being carved directly out of my chest one slow inch at a time. I did not remember crossing the camp. I only remembered the moment the trees opened and the world narrowed to exactly one thing.I broke through the last line of pines and what I found on the other side stopped me cold. She was standing three feet from Titus Crane, alone, unarmed, and very deliberately not running, her spine straight in a way that told me she had chosen to stand there, not been caught there."Think about my offer," Titus was saying to her, quiet, unhurried, the way a man speaks when he already believes he has all the time he needs, his voice carrying easily across the clearing despite its softness. "You have more time than you believe. Not as much as you would like.""Get away from

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 49

Lyra Thorne's POV"Loose ends bleed first."I read the three words scrawled across the parchment out loud, and the moment they left my mouth my stomach dropped straight through the floor of Selene's room. The note had been sitting on her windowsill for less than an hour, and it already felt like it had been sitting there for years, the ink somehow darker than any ink had a right to be."No signature," I said, setting the parchment back down with hands that were not quite steady, my own bandaged wrists a fresh reminder of exactly how literally Corwin meant things like that. "He did not need one."Selene sat on the edge of her bed, arms wrapped around herself, the composure I had watched her wear like armor for months finally cracking at the edges, her shoulders drawn in tight as though she were trying to take up as little space in the room as possible. "I keep reading it and expecting it to say something different," she said. "It never does."I picked the note back up and turned it tow

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 48

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Selene is unharmed."I said it before he could ask, before he could pretend he cared about the answer for the right reasons, my voice cutting flat across the cedar and old parchment smell of my father's study, a smell I hated that some small foolish part of me still found comforting after everything. "Whoever Corwin sent got close enough to leave a warning on her windowsill and nothing more. This time."Damon did not look up from the papers on his desk, and something about his stillness told me he already knew more than he was saying, the same stillness he had worn for seventeen years while an entire pack's murder sat quietly on his conscience. The fire behind him had burned low, throwing more shadow than light across the shelves of ledgers that lined the walls, records of a pack he had built and, I was beginning to understand, quietly poisoned at its foundation. "Corwin was always careful," he said. "He would not risk exposure over a warning that accomplishes no

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 47

Lyra Thorne's POV"Silver burns take three days to fully close," Rhea said, wrapping clean linen around my forearm with the brisk efficiency of a woman who had done this a hundred times before, in worse rooms, for worse reasons. "You will not stop moving for three days. I already know that about you."My wrists were still raw beneath her hands, an hour after Kaelan carried me out of that stone room, and I welcomed the sting of the salve, because it was easier to feel than the fear still sitting cold and heavy in my chest. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Corwin's face in the firelight, patient and unbothered, like burning my family down had cost him nothing at all. The tent around us smelled of dried herbs and tallow candle, warm and close, and somewhere outside I could hear Marcus's enforcers moving in the practiced, quiet rhythm of a camp bracing itself for something."You know me too well for someone I only met four months ago," I said, and it came out lighter than I felt, which w
