GEMMA

As the woman and her daughter walked away, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something had happened to the poor family, a calamity that had shaken them to the core, that would leave them scarred and broken for years to come. It was why I decided to follow them while taking care to make sure they did not have the slightest hint that I was following.

While I moved, I could only think of overhearing the soldiers say that the Northern Province would be easy to run over-which, given the landscape even at those unholy and dark hours of night, I could tell that the spaces between the houses were wide and unprotected.

I was still thinking about it when all of a sudden, a soldier appeared from nowhere and with a torch burning brightly in his hand, causing the woman to shriek for only a split second, and her daughter to cower in fear. For my own part, I jumped back to avoid being caught.

"Nobody has to know," he growled. "Else I will kill you."

I took notice of that face and committe

  • THE ALPHA'S MATE IS AN ASSASIN   A NEW DAWN

ALPHA GREY It was not difficult to wonder given what I heard about Alfred. He too was there as the sun rose, a man loyal to the end. A man who was one of the reasons why I was deemed a god, because he had spies that saw and knew everything, and told me of it just as it happened. Standing a few paces away, with his broad frame towering over the others, and his claws as deadly as any, I could not fathom that he would do anything that would go against my commands.Alfred was among the first members of the pack that conquered all, the first to stand by me when I had only just become the force that would bring Suro down to its knees. He had been my right hand for years, his counsel sharp and his loyalty unquestioned except on a few occasions. Yet, as I watched him wipe a blade clean with an improvised rag that had come from one of the bodies of the dead soldiers, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss."Alfred," I called out to him, and the red in his hair that was not bloo

  • THE ALPHA'S MATE IS AN ASSASIN   THROUGH THE NIGHT

ALPHA GREY I ran like a madman and climbed atop a tower. There, on the highest point, I shifted to my werewolf form and howled the loudest I ever have, calling for my men to gather to me. At first, there was no response, so I howled again, and this time some dark figures started to rush towards the bottom of the tower. An arrow whizzed past my ear as I looked down upon them, and another arrow struck me full in the chest, sending a hurt through my body. They had only turned on my murderous instinct, and raging, I jumped to the bottom of the tower where they were gathered. The first of them to attack came at me without warning in the form of a shadowed figure lunging from the dark, his blade glinting in the faint moonlight. I waited for him to come to me and drove my fist into his gut, while he coughed something wet and warm on me as he doubled over. I did not give him time to recover, seizing his wrist and twisting it until I heard the crack of his bone. With two more of the rebels

  • THE ALPHA'S MATE IS AN ASSASIN   MASSACRE

GEMMAThe poor house was gathered all over by Rebel Soldiers who were certain that Alpha Grey was inside. "Bring him out to us," they chorused, leaving me terrified that they had defeated all our soldiers. The woman and her daughter shrieked in terror, with the little one rushing into the safety of her mother's dress as they both started to cry. For my own part, I stepped closer to the Alpha, knowing that none of them would be able to touch me, or any of us in this place. Not as long as he had his strength with him. "There he is," One of the rebels barked from outside in a show of enthusiasm I found chilling.I looked up at Alpha Grey in the midst of all the chaos-at his white hair as it gleamed faintly in the dim light, and his golden eyes as he stood motionless, watching the events unfold around him. There seemed to be no trace of the weakness that had gripped and left him down on the floor moments before-proof that the wine had done as I thought it would, and rekindling the man t

GEMMA The woman and her daughter screamed in terror."Relax... It's me." I told them. "But the Alpha?""A number of soldiers brought him here," the woman said, regaining her composure after the scare I put her through. "They said that the Rebel Army are putting up a quick attack, and they are trying to contain them.""They left no soldiers to stay with you?""They all rushed off without waiting.""They won't make it. Not unless we can wake him up."I turned towards the man that lay in the room and there was Alpha Grey, the leader of the Suro Kingdom, lying on the mat they had spread earlier to sleep themselves. His eyes were closed shut and his chest rose and fell with slow breaths. I approached him cautiously, still feeling the blood of the soldier I killed on my hands. I dropped to my knees near him and dared to kiss him, touching his white hair, but he still did not move. It made me wonder why... why the Moon Goddess would always place him in my power when I was supposed to kill

  • THE ALPHA'S MATE IS AN ASSASIN   MIDNIGHT FIGHT

GEMMAI stood my ground, my heart pounding in my chest as the soldier charged towards me. My fingers moved like clockwork at the same time, reaching for the dagger I had hidden in my belt and unsheathing it just as the soldier swung his sword at me. I moved to the side, avoiding the blade by what felt like the thinnest of inches, which left me untouched.Standing there and opposite him, I knew that my movement had been slowed by the armour, and that getting it off by any means possible was the only way I could hope to win this fight. Slashing through it seemed to be the best possible option, but I was caught for time, as he started to charge towards me again.I could hardly do anything but stand still until the last moment and attempt a feint that worked quite well, sending him one way while I moved towards another, and then jumped behind a barrel that stood waiting to buy myself some time. As it rolled towards him, I sliced into the strong cords that bound my armour around me and rid

  • THE ALPHA'S MATE IS AN ASSASIN   THE FIGURE

GEMMAI remained with them until they fell asleep. Both mother and daughter were mournful, and I tried to imagine what their family was like before their father was killed for trying to protect them. For their sake, I took off my armour-it had become heavy and arduous anyway-and carried the little girl in my arms. She had become comfortable with the idea of being carried by me, and was more relaxed, to my joy. They spread out a mat and lay on it, while I stood guard though they invited me to come join them. When at last I heard two gentle snores, I slipped out of the house, with my mind racing over plans to help them, to have them feel the loss of their father a little less. I knew it would not be easy, but I was determined to do whatever it took to keep them safe.Wearing the armour back on my frame was exhausting, but I did it anyway and went out, moving myself back into the deserted streets, while surprised that Alfred should be so evil, and daring enough to carry out such plans un
