Mathilda’s POV

I’d rather stay home than go out for lunch today.

Being around Fredric could only make things worse. He’s never looked at me kindly before. Besides, he already said I should change my appearance to look like one of those modern supermodels.

How sad.

I admire Fredric. He’s my first love. Since I was a child until now—at twenty-three—we’ve met many times. And yet, he’s always been cold, never even saying hello.

But that’s normal. Who would greet a weird, nerdy girl like me? Covered in pimples, painfully skinny, and with this messy curly hair that makes me look completely unattractive.

“How are you, Mathilda? Everything going well?” asked Mrs. Rosa, pulling me out of my daydream. I smiled and answered, “Yes, everything’s fine.”

“Working as a cashier isn’t too hard. Unless you become a director of a big company—then you’ll get headaches,” Fredric commented suddenly, joining the conversation. I don’t know why he hates me so much.

As far as I can remember, I’ve always been polite to him. Could it be that he somehow knows I like him?

“I understand. Fredric’s been very busy lately. Too much work makes him irritable and stressed. Even the people at home get scolded by him sometimes. Don’t mind what he just said,” Mrs. Rosa explained quickly. “All jobs are the same—there’s always pressure and responsibility.”

The middle-aged woman looked uneasy and a little guilty after hearing what her only grandson had said.

The three of us just smiled and nodded politely. I’m sure my mother was very annoyed by Fredric’s words.

My mother once said Fredric had always been distant and a bit rebellious. But I don’t blame him. His life isn’t as easy as everyone imagines.

Still, his coldness and arrogance somehow draw me in. Maybe that’s what love feels like when you fall for someone you shouldn’t. Is it really so wrong for a plain, unpopular girl like me to love him in secret?

“Well, Grandma, I don’t want to interrupt your lunch plans, but I have a date with Paula this afternoon. I need to meet her and accompany her to a modeling agency—she’s auditioning today. Can we wrap this up soon?”

Fredric looked at his grandmother, speaking quietly so only she could hear—but my ears caught every word. My parents, on the other hand, didn’t seem to notice the conversation.

“Who’s Paula?” asked Mrs. Rosa.

Something in my chest tightened. Fredric had always changed girlfriends frequently, but for some reason, this time I really wanted to know who Paula was—probably because I’d just overheard her name.

“I’ll introduce her later. Can we hurry with lunch, Grandma?” Fredric muttered impatiently.

That woman must be someone very special to him. If only that woman were me.

Ah… the foolish fantasy of a strange, ordinary girl like me isn’t worth entertaining.

My eyes, which had been fixed on him, quickly darted to my plate when Fredric turned to glance at me. Damn, he probably thinks I’m a stalker.

“Well, Goyle, if you don’t mind,” Mrs. Rosa said to my father, “I’d like to ride back with you after this. Fredric has to leave for an urgent matter. That’s alright, isn’t it?”

Of course my parents agreed. Immediately after that, Fredric stood up and left without saying goodbye. His face was expressionless, cold as ever. Still, I was certain that deep inside, his heart was racing—he was about to meet the woman he adored.

Sometimes I wonder, why is life so unfair? If I can’t have the man of my dreams, couldn’t God at least give me a little happiness through kindness?

Paula.

No.

That name haunts me.

It feels like today is the worst day of my life since I became Fredric’s secret admirer. Why does that name bother me so much? I even tried looking her up on social media, but I couldn’t find anything.

The clock showed eleven at night. I should be asleep—I have to work at seven tomorrow.

Damn it, my brain just won’t stop replaying Fredric’s cold stare and that woman’s name!

Honey!

A piercing cry from my parents’ room shattered my thoughts of Fredric.

“What happened, Mom—MOM!”

I couldn’t finish my sentence. My mother was lying on the floor, foam coming from her mouth. My legs went weak.

“Call an ambulance now! Call the hospital, Mathilda!”

I nodded, tears already streaming down my cheeks. My voice trembled as I called for help, but thankfully, I managed to speak clearly enough that the message got through fast.

My father was crying uncontrollably, holding my mother in his arms. I was terrified. What had she taken?

I collapsed beside the phone, completely powerless. Even when the ambulance arrived and they began lifting my mother’s body, I was still frozen in place.

“Mathilda, let’s go,” my father said, taking my hand, his face swollen from crying.

The ambulance sped away, and just as we exited our yard, I saw Mrs. Rosa standing there.

“Why did Mom collapse?” I asked.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out,” my father answered shakily. “She came out of the bathroom and just fell, with foam at her mouth. What else could I do but scream for help?”

The car sped through the streets. The rest of the ride was silent.

We sat outside the ICU, panic twisting my stomach. It had been almost half an hour with no word from the doctor or the nurses.

My hand ached from how tightly I’d been squeezing it to fight off the panic.

“Dad… will Mom be okay?”

I’d asked him that question so many times that he no longer answered.

As if the universe wanted to reply for him, the ICU door suddenly opened and a doctor appeared. My father and I immediately stood up and rushed toward him.

“How is my wife?” my father asked urgently.

The doctor’s face was blank. He shook his head.

My father ran into the ICU, but I stayed behind, clutching the doctor’s hand.

“Please… tell me what happened! I don’t understand that look on your face!”

“Your mother passed away from a sleeping pill overdose.”

His words made me let go of his hand. My body went limp as I sank to the floor.

Is it true? Has my mother really died?

Why, God… why does this have to happen to us?

MATHILDA'S POVI sat frozen in the corner of the bed, staring around the room that I still couldn't get used to. It was my third day at Enzo's estate deep in the woods near the Silent Drop region, and also the fifth day since my facial reconstruction.I still didn't understand why he had brought me to this secluded mansion, when on the day I regained consciousness we had been staying at his private residence. That one was directly connected to his company in the heart of Samoa—a Western city not too far from New York. I mean, if I had stayed there, maybe I wouldn't have felt so detached from the life I was used to.This feeling of strangeness was completely different. It was as if I were trapped in a terrible nightmare. I wanted to wake up, but I couldn't. All of this left a paralyzing emptiness inside me."Mathilda, may I come in?"For some reason, just Enzo's voice behind the room door brought tears streaming down my face. I stood up and stared at my reflection once more."I don't k

Fredric’s POVMy grandmother and Paula stared at each other with coldness and disdain. I didn't want to take another step or trigger something worse, so I grabbed Paula's hand."Enough, we're leaving," I said."Why should we leave? Are you deaf? Your grandmother just did something that screws you over, Fredric! Are you really going to let all your cars—the ones you bought with the money you earned running the family business—vanish just like that?" Paula screamed.I looked at my grandmother, who crossed her arms and raised her chin with a sarcastic smile."What my grandmother did was her choice, and I respect it. I beg you to—"My sentence was cut short as Paula yanked my arm and pointed a gun at my head.My grandmother's expression shifted; for a brief second, worry was evident. Two bodyguards rushed toward us, aiming their weapons at Paula.Damn it. In that moment, I wished Paula would just pull the trigger and end it all. At least then this hell would be over."Do you think I'm afr

Mathilda’s POVThere was something different. My body felt so light, as if all weight had evaporated. My head was empty as well, like a hollowed-out stone—empty, yet strangely offering space for a new beginning. I felt like a newborn baby, reborn."Mathilda, can you hear me?"Enzo's voice made my eyes open on reflex. His face greeted me, with a soft, sincere smile etched on it.Not only could I open my eyes with ease; my body moved without any pain whatsoever. I sat up quickly, sat upright, and looked at Enzo, who was standing beside the bed."How long was I unconscious?" I asked."Twenty-eight hours. How are you feeling now?" Enzo answered."My body feels so..." I fell silent for a moment, then stood up and raised both hands high. "I don't even feel a trace of the terrible thing that happened to me. Thank you, Enzo! How can I make this up to you?"Enzo remained silent. His gaze was loaded with meaning, as if he were hiding something from me. That silence only heightened my curiosity—

Fredric’s POVGlass after glass, I drank to soothe my confused mind. Two hours have passed since I left the house, and my heart is a complete mess.Even though I can still reach out to my grandmother, it isn't the same. I've really been thrown out, and she is thoroughly disappointed in me.That has been my worst nightmare for as long as I can remember.I've been ignoring my grandmother's calls for the last half hour; she wanted to invite me to dinner.I didn't answer because… where would I even show my face? It's clear my cousins would look at me like I'm absolute trash."Sorry to keep you waiting."That familiar body scent and that distinct raspy voice arrive.Paula smiles broadly as she pats my shoulder."One, two… seven glasses!" Paula seems to count the glasses in front of me. "I thought you'd be past twenty by now and passed out on the floor.""Cut the chatter—just tell me what your real goal is!"I push the glass back toward the bartender, but Paula signals him to stop."I was g

Mathilda’s POVPeople around me seemed to be coming and going, adjusting the ventilator, the IV, and the heart monitor attached to the tip of my finger. It wasn't until today that I truly realized my body was covered in bandages. I saw my right leg held up by a splint, while my left was bandaged at the sole. I had bandages on my left arm as well.Only my face and my right hand were intact."Wouldn't it be better, if my condition is so miserable, for them to euthanize me?"My voice, so weak, was inadvertently heard by the nurse beside me. She turned her head immediately and gently stroked my arm."Miss Mathilda, don't think about what has already happened. You are very lucky to have been saved by young master Enzo.""Ahem!"Enzo appeared behind the nurse, gesturing for her to leave. She looked startled and hurried out of the room. From what I could gather, it was clear that the nurse felt immense fear and respect toward Enzo.Besides, she had just called him "young master.""Don't thin

After yesterday's burial of the casket containing her clothes and the ashes of her body, I could only remain silent in my room, waiting for another chapter in my life.Only now do I realize that Mathilda's death has had such a massive impact—not because of the accusations my grandmother made, but because my heart is becoming increasingly shattered.Every night since that accident, I always dream of Mathilda. Why didn't I simply confess this love to her?"Fredric."My grandmother's voice interrupted my thoughts.
