The moment I remembered that injection again when I saw Lucian standing at the door, an awkward shyness I couldn’t quite explain washed over me.

I quickly lowered my gaze and managed a greeting, barely sparing him a glance.

“Good afternoon, sir.”

His deep voice rumbled in response, “You’re awake.”

I nodded, my fingers tightening around the blanket covering my lap. My gaze darted to the grand chandelier hanging from the ceiling, to the intricate gold embroidery on the curtains—anywhere but at him.

I heard his footsteps approaching, each one slow and deliberate. My pulse picked up as he came closer, but nothing could have prepared me for what he did next.

His warm palm pressed against my forehead.

I stiffened, my breath hitching in my throat.

What the—?

I blinked up at him, utterly bewildered. What did my foot injury have to do with my head?

Before, I had been avoiding his gaze, but now, I found myself looking straight into his eyes.
