EVANGELINE

The next morning dawned bright and hot, with the kind of oppressive heat that made even the lightest clothes feel suffocating.

I chose a simple dress that reached just above my knees, hoping the shorter length would provide some relief from the temperature.

When I made my way downstairs, I found Sebastian and Cordelia already busy in the kitchen, working together to prepare what looked like an elaborate breakfast spread.

"Good morning," I called out, trying to inject some normalcy into my voice.

They both looked up from their tasks and responded at the same time, "Good morning!"

The timing made me smile despite my complicated mood. "Can I help with anything? I feel guilty just standing here while you do all the work."

I moved to stand beside Cordelia, who was carefully slicing fresh strawberries into perfect, uniform pieces. Her movements were precise and methodical, and I found the repetitive action somehow soothing to watch.

"No, we're almost finished," she replied with a

Well we all know Seraphina is gonna lie but what all did Margaret see on her way in? I can’t believe Thaddeus would go along with whatever scheme Seraphina has planned. He’ll ruin him friendship with Evangeline bcuz I know it’s probably something to come between her and Gael.

EVANGELINEThat voice was enough to send waves of panic crashing through my very being like a tsunami.I could feel Gael’s eyes darting between Thaddeus and me, taking in the compromising position we were in.Thaddeus holding me this way, his arms wrapped around my waist while I struggled against him, looked incredibly suspicious. My heart rate spiked instantly. All my focus centered on separating Thaddeus's arms from around me.The urgency of the situation gave me strength I didn't know I possessed. With tremendous effort, I finally managed to break free from his embrace. My feet hit the ground solidly, and I stumbled back a step to regain my balance. Only then did I allow my gaze to find Gael’s familiar frame advancing toward us.The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the dangerous glint in his eyes. Even from a distance, I could see the tension in his shoulders, the predatory way he moved. He looked like a man on the hunt.We exchanged tense looks across th

EVANGELINEThe rest of the day passed in a blur of forced normalcy. Sebastian and Thaddeus returned from town with several bottles of spirits, their cheerful mood a contrast to my increasingly dark mood. The group gathered on the terrace as planned, settling into comfortable chairs arranged in a loose circle.Gael didn't join us, and I found that his absence was both a relief and a disappointment. Part of me had hoped that our confrontation might have shaken something loose in him, might have made him reconsider his choices. But apparently, I'd been naive to think that one conversation could undo months or maybe years of poor decisions.Margaret was the first to feel the effects of the alcohol, giggling at jokes that weren't particularly funny and telling rambling stories that seemed to have no point. Her uninhibited laughter was infectious, and soon the entire group was more relaxed than we'd been since arriving at the lake house.I found myself watching Thaddeus with growing concern

EVANGELINEEvery eye turned toward Seraphina, who leaned back in her chair with what looked like calculated casualness."And with Gael," Margaret continued.I looked at Seraphina, knowing she was about to say something that would make the situation infinitely worse. Her expression was that of someone who thought they held all the cards, someone who believed they could manipulate any situation to their advantage."It was me," I said quickly, before she could respond. "I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk in the garden. The darkness must have made it difficult to see clearly."Margaret frowned, clearly not satisfied with my explanation. "Am I so blind that I can't tell the difference between you and her? I know what I saw!"I sighed in exasperation, turning my full attention to her. "The garden was quite dark last night, Margaret. Without proper lighting, it would be easy to mistake one person for another." I paused, then added with just the right amount of indignation, "Besides, what

EVANGELINEWhen I stepped outside, I found them exactly as I'd seen from the window. Seraphina was standing opposite Gael while he remained seated, leaning back in his chair with an air of casual indifference. He was smoking again, the cigarette dangling from his lips as he stared out at the lake rather than looking at her.Her expression changed from seductive confidence to resentment the moment our eyes met.The hatred that flashed across her features was so intense it was almost tangible."What are you doing here!" she snarled through clenched teeth, her hands balling into fists at her sides.Sparks of pure malice seemed to fly from her eyes as she glared at me.Who was I to resist the opportunity to fan those flames even higher?"I came to check on my husband," I replied with false sweetness. "What about you? Shouldn't you be with Sebastian right now?"The barb hit its mark, and I saw her flinch slightly before she recovered her composure. She pressed her body against Gael's thig

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    CH.77

EVANGELINEHe'd been waiting in the shadows, watching me enter like a predator lying in wait for its prey.My terrified eyes met his in the dim light, and what I saw there made my blood run cold. His dark stare was intense beyond anything I'd experienced before.I pressed my hands to his chest instinctively, trying to create some distance between us, but he was immovable as stone."Stay back!" I managed to say but my voice came out smaller than I'd intended.Gael’s hands moved from the door to rest on either side of my waist, his fingers digging into my flesh with enough pressure to leave marks. The pain made me gasp, but I refused to show weakness by crying out.He brought his face closer to mine, so close that I could feel his breath on my skin when he spoke."You're playing with fire, dear wife." His voice was rough, dangerous, like gravel mixed with honey. The endearment should have been condescending, but the way he said it made heat pool in my stomach. My breathing became unstea
