LOGINJulian’s gaze didn’t just linger; it pinned her to the floor. The penthouse fell into a heavy silence, the tension so thick that the air conditioning seemed unusually loud.
Marcus, Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerously quiet register. He didn't look away from Elena. "Leave us."
Marcus glanced between them, his brows lifting slightly as he caught the sudden shift in the room. He was used to Julian’s intensity, but this was different.
"Jules, the morning briefing."
“ Now, Marcus.”
With a brief, assessing look at Elena, Marcus stepped back into the elevator. The glass doors slid shut, leaving her alone with the man she had insulted a few days ago.
Julian moved slowly around his massive mahogany desk. Every step was deliberate, controlled. He stopped exactly two feet away from her.
Up close, his presence was overwhelming. He smelled faintly of rain, cedarwood, and something sharp and expensive.
“You have exactly sixty seconds, Julian said smoothly, though there was a clear edge beneath his tone. “ Explain how a spoiled, shallow heiress who can’t arrive on time has suddenly become an applicant for my executive office”
He leaned slightly closer, his gaze unwavering.
“And choose your words carefully. I don’t tolerate games in this building.”
Elena felt her pulse slam against her ribs, but she forced her shoulders back.
I am not an heiress, Mr. Cross, she said, her voice steady. “And I didn't lie on my application. My name is Elena Brooks.
She held his gaze.
“The woman you were supposed to meet on Saturday is Chloe Vance. She didn’t want to go, so she asked me to take her place and ruin it. She wanted her father to stop pressuring her. She doesn’t even know who you are. She thought you were just another boring businessman,” she said, rolling her eyes. “She wasn't wrong, though.”
Silence followed.
Julian didn’t respond immediately. His eyes narrowed slightly, as if weighing every word she had just said.
“You expect me to believe, he said slowly, “ that you performed a favour for a Vance?”
" It wasn't a favour,” Elena replied. She pays me when I do things like that for her. I have bills to pay.”
She exhaled quietly, then continued.
“As for this job, I didn’t even know your company was hiring. My sister submitted my CV without telling me because I’d been struggling to find something that pays enough. Your HR team hired me because they thought I could handle your temper.”
A short, humorless laugh escaped him.
Julian turned away and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the gray skyline. His hands clasped behind his back, tension visible in the set of his shoulders.
He was angry… but not entirely for the reasons she expected.
Seeing her like this -without the oversized sunglasses, without the careless attitude-was…different. In the cafe, her sharp tongue had lingered in his mind longer than it should have. Now, she stood here stripped of pretense, and it unsettled him.
He didn’t like it.
“You are a liability, Julian said at last, turning back to face her. His expression had hardened again. “You entered a private arrangement under pretenses. I could have you blacklisted from every corporate office in this city by noon."
For what? Elena shot back, stepping forward.
“For protecting a friend from a blind date?”
Her voice sharpened.
“I haven’t touched your company files. I haven’t lied on a single document. If you fire me before I even start, it won’t be about policy- it’ll be about your ego.”
She met his stare head-on.
“Go ahead and call HR. But if you do, you’ll be proving your COO right -that you can’t handle anyone who doesn’t flinch when you raise your voice.”
The room fell into a charged silence.
Julian studied her carefully- the set of her jaw, the fire in her eyes, the way she held her ground despite having nothing but sheer determination to rely on.
A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips.
You think you are resilient, Miss Brooks? “He asked quietly.” Let us test that.”
He moved back behind his desk.
“ You want the paycheck? You’ll earn every single cent of it. Your probationary period starts now.
He picked up a file and dropped it onto the desk with a soft thud.
“I want you to review the last quarter’s regional expense reports. Flag every inconsistency, cross-reference the data, and have a full report on my desk before I leave tonight.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
It was a brutal task, but not impossible.
“Understood,” she said.
“And one more thing,” Julian added, leaning forward slightly, his gaze locking onto hers.
“ From this moment on, your personal life does not exist during business hours.
His voice lowered.
“ If I see a single trace of the Vance family or your side jobs interfering with your work, I will terminate your contract immediately. No warnings.”
A brief pause.
“Do we understand each other?
"Oh, we understand each other perfectly, Mr. Cross,” Elena said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Julian pointed toward the glass desk just outside his office.
“Then get to work.”
Elena turned and walked out, her spine straight.
The moment she sat down, her fingers trembled slightly against the keyboard.
This might have been a mistake.
But as she opened the first file, something colder and stronger settled inside her.
She wasn't going back to struggling. And she wasn't about to let Julian Cross push her out.
Inside his office, Julian stood by the window, his gaze drifting toward the glass partition.
He watched as she pulled her hair back into a neat bun, her expression sharpening with focus as she began working without hesitation.
A faint, unfamiliar tension settled in his chest.
He had given her a near-impossible task,
She hadn't even blinked.
His desk phone buzzed. He picked it up.
“Jules, Marcus’s voice came through, laced with amusement. Did she survive the first ten minutes?”
“She’s at her desk”, Julian replied shortly.
Marcus chuckled. “I’m impressed. I think you’ve finally met someone who won’t fold.”
“Good luck with that, boss.”
Julian set the receiver down and looked back through the glass.
The fire he’d seen in the café hadn't been an act.
It was who she was.
And for the first time in a long while, he found himself wondering, not if she would break.
But how far the fire would go before it burned everything in its path.
That night, Elena couldn’t sleep. She turned onto her side and stared into the darkness; her hand drifted toward her phone before she stopped herself and placed it back on the bedside table. It wasn’t that she suddenly believed Julian didn’t love her. What keeps bothering her is the contradiction.Julian had apologized to her. He’d admitted he’d felt something for her.And he’d kissed her.Yet Anastasia had stood in front of him with that confidence and called herself his fiancée.Elena closed her eyes. The scene returned in fragments.Anastasia’s confidence.Julian’s silence. The way everything had seemed to happen around her as though she had walked into a conversation she wasn’t supposed to hear.Elena’s fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket. Why was Anastasia so certain of their relationship? That was the question she couldn’t shake. What exactly had happened between Julian and Anastasia? If they weren’t together, why hadn’t Julian denied the engagement? And what had Ju
Julian returned to work shortly after leaving Anastasia at the hotel. He had several meetings waiting for him, and he spent most of the afternoon moving from one room to another, dealing with contracts, reports, and the questions his executives had been holding for his return.By the time his final meeting ended, the office was beginning to empty.Julian glanced at the time.He should have gone home.Instead, he found himself walking toward Elena’s desk. She was still there. Her attention was fixed on her computer. She didn’t notice him until he stopped beside her.She looked up.“You’re still here.”Julian said“Yes, I have some work to finish.”“Have you eaten?”Elena shook her head.“I’ll eat when I get home.”He frowned. You said that yesterday. She smiled faintly.“You remembered?”“I remember a lot of things about you.”The words came out before he could stop them.Elena looked at him.For a moment, neither of them spoke. The tension between them was unmistakable.“It was famili
Julian’s phone rang before he had finished his first cup of coffee. He glanced at the screen.Father.He considered letting it ring.He already knew why Arthur was calling. The moment Anastasia’s return was confirmed, Julian knew his father would expect him to be involved. He answered.“Yes?”“Where are you?”“The office.”Julian’s expression hardened.“Why?”“You need to leave.”Julian frowned. There was a brief silence on the other end.“Where?”“The airport.”Julian leaned back in his chair.“I have a meeting this morning.”“Cancel it.”Julian’s jaw tightened.“Why?”“Anastasia’s flight lands in an hour.”There was another brief silence.Julian closed his eyes.“Of course.”Arthur continued.“I expect you to be there when she arrives.”“I’m not her welcoming committee.”“You’re her fiancé.”“Don’t make this difficult, Julian.”Julian almost laughed.“You’re the one making it difficult.”“I’ve already made arrangements. She’s expecting you.”Julian stared out the window. He could re
Some days had passed since Elena decided she would return to Cross International. She had spent most of those days at home, trying to convince herself that walking back into the building would be easier than it actually felt.Maya had asked her more than once if she was sure.Every time, Elena gave the same answer.I need the job.But needing something and being ready for it were two different things. That morning, Elena sat at the dining table with her laptop open in front of her.She scrolled through another job posting.Executive Assistant — Position Filled. She moved to the next one.Application Unsuccessful.Another.We regret to inform you that your application was not successful.Elena sighed and leaned back in her chair. She had lost count of how many applications she had sent over the past few days. Some never received responses.Others sent polite rejection emails. She stared at the screen for a moment before closing her eyes.Maybe she wasn’t meant to start over somewhere e
The Cross estate was quiet when Julian arrived. He stepped through the front door, loosened his tie, and dropped his keys onto the marble counter.Usually, coming home was the one part of his day he looked forward to.Tonight, it felt different. No employees. No distractions.Just silence. And the silence only made his thoughts louder. He walked into the living room and dropped onto the sofa. His thoughts immediately returned to Elena. Then to the man who had walked out of her apartment.Julian frowned. He had no reason to care who the man was.At least, that’s what he kept telling himself. But Marcus’s voice from earlier refused to leave his head.“Figure out whether you’re chasing the truth…or chasing Elena.”He picked up his laptop and opened it.Several people were working for him. Someone inside Cross International had leaked confidential information, and Julian intended to find out who.But tonight, the investigation wasn’t the only thing occupying his mind.Nothing made sense.
The morning sun bathed the streets in golden light, mocking the storm inside.Julian sat behind the wheel of his black SUV, parked across from Elena’s apartment building. He contemplated whether to see Elena or leave. He barely noticed. He hadn’t slept.Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Elena walking away from him at the restaurant. His hands tightened around the steering wheel. He knew he shouldn’t be there. After everything that had happened, he had no right to see her. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to leave until he knew she was safe.Maybe she was finally happy without him.The apartment door finally opened.Julian instinctively straightened. The warmth drained from his face.A tall man stepped out behind Elena, adjusting the sleeve of his jacket with the casual ease of someone who belonged there. He smiled.“Take care of yourself…” Call me if you need anything,” Leo said.Julian couldn’t hear the reply, but he watched the man wave casually before walking away.Something sharp
