AVA'S POV

The warehouse exuded the smell of stale cigarettes and alcohol— typically familiar. A stag wavering bulb above the entrance of the gates unchained! It was like an almost perfect invite,’’proud asses, typical Volkov arrogance’’.

They’ve always thought their reputation kept them untouchable. Well, I was here to correct that assumption.

I lowered my body behind some tall grasses just at the entrance of the gates, my eyes sharpened carefully analyzing the building

On the left hand side of the building thee was a fire escape—rusty but stable. The second floor had a casement window left slightly open, there was a faint curl of smoke rising from a cigarette resting in an ashtray still left burning on the ledge. ‘’Sloppy’’ Some guard must have gotten distracted mid-smoke break. Their carelessness was my invitation.’’JACKPOT!’’

The climb was a breeze. Too easy. When my gloved fingers found the window ledge, it creaked open another inch without resistance. Not even locked. These so-called wolves were practically begging to get slaughtered.

I slipped inside, landing silently on the catwalk. Below me, the warehouse stretched out—shipping containers stacked like crooked teeth, a single guard dozing near what looked like a makeshift server station.

The flash drive in my pocket suddenly felt heavier. This little piece of tech was going to burn the Volkov empire to the ground. I just had to get it into their system without getting caught. I inserted it swiftly,While waiting for the d******d to be completed, I decided to give myself a little tour. I mean the guards were all probably in a dream state, what difference could it possibly make. A part of me wished I hadn't said that though, mom always told me saying ‘What difference would it make or what harm could it possibly bring’ is basically inviting evil in yourself.

I was halfway down the stairs when I heard the click of a gun safety being released “fuck!”.  I muttered lowly my hands slightly trembling ‘get a grip of yourself Ava's I thought to myself my hands clenching to my leather pants all sweaty “what the fuck are you going to do now Ava” Ellie's voice crackled through the earpiece I was wearing. I drew a sharp breath, my eyes locked on the flash drive I had inserted in their system. From the way he is sounding he probably doesn't know what my real intentions are or even what I have done yet.

"You know pretty girls like you shouldn't be playing dangerous games like this” A voice echoed causing my stomach to drop again,‘Shit!’

I turned slowly still trying to tame the fear I had. Why on earth am I feeling like this, it's not the first time I've been on the job. Why does doing it today feel so weird?I thought, raising my eyes to meet his gaze. The guard was big, pure muscled and  tattooed—he had a dirty stare that made my skin crawl, even worse he was armed. His gaze traveled over my body, his tongue trailed slowly over his lips, like he was savoring a feast, I rolled my eyes in utter disgust "And dumb boys shouldn't leave windows open." I chuckled lightly, my eyes still glued on him “Now I just have to teach a lesson, I like pretty girls but I hate girls with a bratty attitude” He said clearly underestimating me, “Well are you going to use that gun to teach a lesson, really I expected more from a man like you” I let out a seductive smirk. It was the only way at this point I didn't take my gun with me, only my dagger and it obviously can't stand a gun. I should have listened to Ellie when she said to take it with me,this was supposed to be a clean mission. I continued to flirt, trying to push his buttons as much as possible just to get him to drop that damn gun “It really doesn't reflect the gentleman in you, you know you are pointing a gun to a lady knowing fully well I am not armed that's bad, I am just a girl after all, if you want to fight let's do it hand to hand, don't you think?”

His eyes darkened.

He dropped his gun “perfecto!” I let out a faint smirk as he lunged towards me

Wrong move.

I let him come, sidestepping at the last second so he stumbled past me. 84% loaded on the screen behind him. I sent a roundhouse kick to his kidneys and sent him crashing into the server rack,” fuck!’’ he groaned loudly, his hands clutching to his abdomen trying to suppress the pain

.92%.

He swung wildly—I ducked, driving my elbow straight into his guts. “You bitch” he growled, a part of me worried his loud groans might alert some other guard, I had to leave this place quickly.

My eyes traveled back to the screen behind him. It was 100%.

"Bedtime, sweetheart," I murmured  . He looked up, his eyes wide with pain, just in time to see my hand strike a nerve cluster right below his ears, a jolt of pure decapitating shock flowed through him, his eyes rolled back into his head, showing only white as slowly collapsed to the floor.

I yanked the flash drive free just as shouts started echoing through the warehouse. It was mission complete.

I was out the window before the first reinforcements arrived. I launched myself down hitting the fire escape with practiced ease, my boots barely making a sound as I descended two levels at a time before dropping the final few feet into the alley below.

Ellie's voice spiked again in my earpiece; "Damn, Ava. Remind me never to get on your bad side."

I sprinted to where my bike was hidden, the grin on my face loud and proud. The engine roared between my legs as I kick-started my bike swiftly and disappeared into the night.

“Volkov's gonna wake up to one hell of a morning."

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER SIXTY THREE

Ava's Pov The past two months had been a blur of quiet miracles. The doctors kept using words like “against all odds” and “fighter,” and they weren’t just talking about me. My little one had held on with a stubbornness I was sure came from their father. We’d survived. And Dante… he had become my shadow, my guardian, my slightly overbearing, incredibly loving fortress. I couldn’t so much as pick up a throw pillow without him swooping in.“Ava! What are you doing?” his voice, laced with panic, had echoed through the living room just last week.I’d frozen, a light blanket in my hands. “I… was going to put this on the couch?”He’d crossed the room in three long strides, gently taking the blanket from me. “No. No carrying things. You rest.” His hands had then come to rest on the small, firm curve of my belly. Our baby bump. It was there, a perfect, beautiful swell that made my heart ache with a love so fierce it was terrifying.“Dante, it’s a blanket,” I’d laughed, but I leaned into his to

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER SIXTY TWO

Dante's Pov The only sound in the room was the soft, steady beep of the heart monitor. Each beep was a tiny anchor, proof that she was still fighting, still here with me. Ava looked so small in the white hospital bed, her skin pale against the stark sheets. Tubes and wires snaked from her arms, and a large bandage was taped to her side, a brutal reminder of the hole that monster had put in her.I held her limp hand, my thumb stroking over her knuckles. It was cold.“Why didn’t you tell me, baby?” I whispered, my voice rough from lack of sleep and unshed tears. I leaned closer, my forehead almost touching her arm. “Why didn’t you tell me about the baby?”The memory of finding out slammed into me all over again, a fresh wave of pain.---It was chaos when we got to the hospital. I was covered in her blood, shouting at the doctors, my voice cracking. They rushed her into surgery, and I was left in the stark, bright hallway, my hands stained red. I couldn’t breathe. The image of her fall

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER SIXTY ONE

Ava's Pov The morning sun was warm on my skin as we walked hand-in-hand along a secluded coastal path. It was our last full day in Santorini, and Dante had wanted to show me a hidden cove he’d found. The path was narrow, winding through fragrant wild thyme and crumbling stone walls, with the turquoise sea glittering far below. It was just us. No guards, no men. Just the two of us and the sound of the cicadas.“I still think we should have brought someone,” I murmured, even though I loved the privacy.“And have them listen to me try to convince you to go swimming with me?” Dante teased, squeezing my hand. “No, thank you. This is just for us.”I leaned into his side, feeling safe and utterly content. The secret I carried felt like a warm, humming light inside me. Tonight. I would tell him tonight. We rounded a bend, and the cove came into view—a perfect, tiny crescent of white sand embraced by steep cliffs. It was breathtaking. And then, the world froze.A figure stepped out from behin

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER SIXTY

Ava's Pov The gentle sound of waves lapping against the villa’s private dock was my new favorite sound. Two weeks. We’d been in this little slice of heaven in Santorini for two whole weeks, and every day felt more perfect than the last.White buildings with brilliant blue domes clung to the cliffs against a backdrop of the endless, sparkling Aegean Sea. Our villa had its own infinity pool that looked like it spilled right into the ocean. In the mornings, we’d have breakfast on the terrace, surrounded by pots of pink bougainvillea, eating fresh figs and yogurt. Dante would read the news on his tablet, his brow furrowed, and I’d be hunched over my laptop, lines of code glowing on the screen. After the fall of my father’s empire, I needed to build something of my own. Something clean. With Dante’s quiet backing and the contacts he’d vouched for, I was launching my own cyber-security firm. The app I was designing was one of my own steps to a success that didn't invite father for the firs

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER FIFTY NINE

Ava's Pov The second Dante's lips touched mine I was lost for words, his kiss was ravaging hungry, we both left the party early just for this to spend time with each other. He didn't waste a single second as we heard the click of our bedroom door, he instantly captured my mouth a hasty hungry kiss directing me towards the bed without breaking the kiss. I moaned softly as he trail his kisses down my neck his teeth grazing against my skin, he was making his mark and I was more than happy to be marked by him. He kissed me again, this time even deeper, I ran my hand through his hair tugging it , he groaned roughly his voice filled with lust and so much passion. Dante kissed like a man starved, he devoured me with so much precision and hunger that equally matched mine, it had been so long since I had sex, I hadn't been with anyone except him since. For five years of being celibate, I was here with him being completely unraveled, bring seen by him but I need more, I need more friction betw

  • THE CHARADE   CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT

Ava's Pov The news played on a constant, quiet loop on the large screen in the living room. Financial analysts looked stunned, talking about the "unprecedented collapse" and "catastrophic data loss" within the Cavallaro corporate empire. I sat with a cup of tea, watching it all burn. There was no joy in it, just a cold, quiet satisfaction. A chapter was finally closed. I beat him at his own game.My phone buzzed on the marble countertop. The screen flashed: Denis Cavallaro. I let it ring three times before I answered, saying nothing."You are responsible for this, aren't you?" His voice was a ragged, furious snarl, stripped of all its usual power. "You little brat. Just like your mother. Defiant until the end. I gave you a chance to live, and this is how you repay me?"The mention of my mother was the final spark. Any last shred of doubt or guilt evaporated."Father? No. Sorry, Denis Cavallaro," I said, my voice icy and steady. "You got exactly what you deserved. You know, if I wante
