Chapter Five

Piper’s POV

The dress fit like armor.

The charcoal silk hugged my curves, the high slit daring but necessary—I needed freedom to move tonight. Not just in the literal sense, but in the emotional one too. If I had to wear a mask of elegance while playing chess with monsters, I’d at least do it on my terms.

I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the necklace Cameron insisted I wear. A single diamond teardrop. I was simple, understated and dangerous, because tucked into the clasp was a micro-transmitter barely the size of a fingernail.

“Everything’s working,” Cameron’s voice crackled through the earpiece hidden behind a lock of hair. “Stay near the center of the gala floor. We lose signal if you go deeper into the wings.”

“Got it,” I murmured, swiping on a final layer of lipstick— it was wine red.

The gala was a benefit hosted by the Ashcroft Foundation—one of Ethan’s many foundations. The kind of event designed to launder reputations under chandeliers and charity smiles. I was invited and I had to show up as the dutiful wife.

I entered through the north wing. The lights inside sparkled like champagne, casting fractured gold across every polished surface. People mingled, rich and powerful and oblivious, sipping vintage liquor and pretending the world didn’t burn outside their marble wall moved with practiced grace, collecting smiles and ignoring whispers. I could feel eyes on me. Ethan had always surrounded himself with people who saw women like me as liabilities or trophies—never equals.

I let them underestimate me……….Let them.

My pulse jumped as I spotted him…….Ethan.

He was at the far end of the ballroom, a glass in hand, head slightly bowed in conversation with someone I couldn’t see from this angle. His suit was impeccable, as always. So was his arrogance but there was a tension in his stance, a sharpness to his movements.

He knew I was here.

I turned toward the bar, pretending I hadn’t seen him and pretending I wasn’t watching every inch of that room.

“Target two o’clock,” Cameron murmured. “And Piper… be careful. You’re not just bait anymore. You’re the whole trap.”

I smiled tightly. “Good.”

That’s when I saw her…..Selena.

She stood near the grand staircase like she owned the damn place. All legs and lace, her dress sheer enough to make the waitstaff blush. She spotted me almost instantly and smiled—wide, sugary, lethal.

She started walking toward me.

I turned away and pretended to sip champagne, bracing myself.

“Fancy seeing you here,” she said sweetly, planting herself beside me at the bar. Her voice carried that silk-wrapped dagger edge only women like her could master.

“Likewise.” I didn’t look at her.

Selena chuckled. “I almost didn’t recognize you. That dress screams vengeance, darling. Is that what tonight is? A little performance art? Or are you just desperate to see him again?”

I faced her slowly. “Is that what you think? That I came here for Ethan?”

She leaned in close, smile unwavering. “Please. We both know how bad you want him back home and to be over you.”

“I did,” I said, my voice like frost. “Right around the time he started drugging me with anti-anxiety meds I didn’t need.”

Her smile faltered just a fraction.

I stepped closer. “Tell me, Selena. Did he promise you a future? Power? Because I hope you’re enjoying your lingerie photo shoots while they last. When the truth comes out, he’ll drag you down with him.”

Selena’s eyes narrowed. “You talk like someone who still thinks she’s the victim.”

“I’m not the victim,” I said. “I’m the reckoning.”

Before she could reply, the music changed.

The lights dimmed, drawing attention to the front of the ballroom. Ethan stepped onto the stage, flanked by board members, his voice amplified through hidden speakers.

I barely heard what he said. I was focused on the man who stood behind him, half-shadowed near the side entrance.

It was Christopher Hale.

I stiffened.

He was here? And he was watching.

“Cameron, confirm visual—are you seeing this?” I murmured under my breath.

Silence.

“Cameron?” But Still nothing.

Static hissed faintly in my ear. Shit, something was wrong. I turned instinctively, scanning the crowd again—and that’s when Selena grabbed my wrist, nails digging into skin.

Her voice was low and sharp. “You don’t get it, do you? He’s never going to let you win. You think you’re playing chess? You’re not even on the board.”

I yanked my hand free, stepping back.

“Tell Ethan,” I said coldly, “his empire’s already burning. He just doesn’t smell the smoke yet.”

I moved away from her, weaving through the crowd, trying to find a clearer line of sight to Hale—but he was gone, just vanished.

My earpiece clicked to life.

“Piper……..run.” Cameron’s voice came through sounding urgent and breathy.

“Why?” I hissed. “What’s happening?”

“Security has been compromised. They’re tracking your signal and someone—someone tipped them off. You need to move, now.”

My adrenaline surged. I turned toward the exit just as two men in dark suits began closing in from either side. They weren’t dressed like waiters. They moved like predators.

Shit.

I slipped behind a column, heart pounding, reaching for the small flash drive hidden in my clutch. If they got me, they wouldn’t find much—but this? This was leverage.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed my arm from behind.

Not rough. Familiar.

“Don’t scream,” a voice whispered.

I turned—

It was Hale.

He smiled like the devil. “Let’s finish what you started.”

  • THE COLD CEO UNKNOWN HEIR   Chapter 29

Chapter 29. Ethan's POV My hand gripped the rear of my mouse harder, the heat in my office fanning my skin. I traced my fingers along the line on the mouse while my lips remained tightly pursed as my eyes took in the scene playing before my eyes. Piper stabbing Christopher in the chest with what seemed like a hidden knife…the desperation and raw….unfiltered rage in her eyes sent shivers down my spine. My breath was stuck in my lungs, unable to grasp the thought of my ex-wife being an expert fighter. That was the only way I could explain her escape from Christopher. But I'd never seen her so furious. Had she hiding something from me during our marriage? Was there more to the innocent little Piper that I tried to break with my words? My hands slowly crossed over to my thighs, gripping them tight. After staring at nothing else but my computer screen for hours, I didn't need any more explanation about why Christopher desperately wanted to get his hands on Piper. And I had to get

Chapter 28Piper's POV “Piper, you can't keep yourself locked in all day.” Mr Langford's voice bellowed outside the door. Inside my room, I buried my head even deeper under the sheets and bit my lips hard until the sour taste of blood stained my tongue. I still couldn't fathom why I had behaved like a rabid dog on heat. My heart started to pick up faster beats at the sound of his voice. I closed my second, wishing he would just leave me to wallow in my misery. My hands swiftly covered my ears when I heard him knocking again. I almost cussed at him to leave but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I remained that way for a while, with my heart slamming against my ribcage until I slowly decided to pull away and to my surprise, I could no longer hear him. Silence swallowed my room and without being told, I pushed the cover away, with my heart in my mouth and slowly sat up. “Did he really leave?” I thought to myself, feeling a mix of relief and emptiness. I wanted him to leave, right

Chapter 27Ethan's POV “Baby, this is a risky move. We can't afford to do it.” Selena raised her voice slightly. My eyes ignored the urge to take a glimpse at her. Instead, I let my gaze falter over the large, transparent window separating my office from the city. Selena was sitting in my chair in a short, slutty, red dress that barely covered her body. “I know but what would you have me do,” I grunted. “Christopher wants to take his revenge on her personally, I can't refuse that.” I added, swallowing hard. Her image floated in my head like an unwanted pest. The freckles on her face, her big, innocent eyes that would do anything but stick to their place. Selena grunted a response under her breath but I didn't care. I cracked my fingers against each other, dwelling in the thoughts of bringing Piper back to my life. .“That stubborn bitch! She just can't leave our lives, can she?” Selena clicked her teeth in frustration. We were both riled up because there was just too much at st

Chapter 26Piper's POV “Are you really not going to say anything to me?” Mr Langford’s voice seeped through the heavy silence in the car. For a second, I almost turned my eyes to look at him but I forced my head to remain stuck to the window. We were in a Lamborghini, one of the cars Ethan would never have allowed me to go near in his house. Not even if I was dying. My ex-husband would go into cardiac arrest, lose his head, and turn into a raging animal if he ever saw me near any of his luxurious cars. But here was a total stranger, reaching for me in his car. The air conditioning in the car swayed against my skin, making me snuggle closer to my sweater, pulling further away from Jace. I hated being in that position but I just couldn't help it. Ruby's face was flashing in my head like a police siren. The burning glare on her face made my skin crawl with fear. My mind was far gone into the distance. Something about her actions reminded me of Selena. The woman who ruined my marria

Chapter 25Piper's POV“This is the board room.” Ruby's voice finally broke through the thick air of silence between us. Her brown eyes sharply cut through my gaze as she pushed a huge, transparent glass door open. The burning glare on her face almost burned through my skin….if it could. “Uhm…yeah…thank you….” I stuttered, clinging at the sleeve of my sweater as I walked in. The walk from my office down to this place had to be the longest walk of my life. Ruby kept muttering cuss words under her breath. A strong, sweet scent flushed across my nose as soon as I stepped into the board room. Two long lines of chairs and a long table stretched from the beginning of the room. As I glanced around the room, the memories of Ethan in his board room washed up in my head. Every single thing about his meeting days replayed in my head, often because I admired him the most on those days. The sharp line of his trouser gators, the crispiness of his well ironed tuxedo, his smooth, yet contrasting

Piper povBy the time we arrived at the company, one of the doormen grabbed the bags from the car, “Take those to her office.” He said to them as we all made it towards my office when Ruby appeared.“Mr Langford, you’ve returned.” She started with a smug look on her face. She darted her eyes at the shopping bags, “Is this what took you all so long?” With a single finger, she pulled one of the bags slightly open and peeped inside, then she raised her gaze to me, and ran her eyes through me with a look of disgust on her face. She then turned to Jace, “Mr Langford, you took her shopping?”“And what gives you the right to question me like that?” Jace said to her with an expressionless face as he gestured to the man with the bags where he could drop them.Ruby chuckled, very uncomfortable, “Sorry, sir, I’m just surprised to see this, it just had to be at lunch time.”He glared at her, “Did you do what I delegated you to do?” “Yes, of course, sir.” She hurried to the other side of the desk
