Piper’s POV
The sound of clinking champagne glasses echoed through the grand ballroom, mixing with the subtle jazz music humming in the background. Glittering chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting soft golden light on perfectly polished floors and people dressed in designer tuxedos and dresses worth more than my monthly allowance and I stood there, like a mannequin in a glass case—beautiful, untouchable, and completely hollow inside.
Everyone looked at me like I had it all….. Ethan Miller’s wife, the queen of this castle but what they didn’t know was that my crown was made of thorns and my throne, cold marble.
I adjusted the thin strap of my silver dress, the sequins scratching against my skin. I hated this dress. Ethan picked it out, he said it made me look “presentable.” That was the word he used for me these days. Presentable, like a vase or an antique or something expensive, dusted occasionally, and placed on display when needed.
A waiter passed by with a tray of flutes. I grabbed one and downed the champagne in two swallows. It was not elegant, not proper but I didn’t care anymore.
I scanned the room looking for Ethan. He was somewhere, mingling with the elite, flashing that polite, cold smile he reserved for the public. He wore it well—the mask of the perfect billionaire but I knew better. I knew what lay beneath……. A heart frozen by betrayal and a mind so consumed with control that it strangled everything in its reach—including me.
I turned toward the hallway, suddenly needing air more than anything. My heels clicked on the marble as I walked, each step echoing my resentment. I wasn’t even supposed to be here tonight. Ethan only invited me because it would have looked bad if I didn’t show and not because he wanted me here.
As I passed by a group of guests standing near the bar, their conversation reached my ears—soft, hushed, but enough.
“Isn’t that her? Ethan Miller’s wife?” The first lady said, her voice barely in a whisper
“She doesn’t look happy… not that I blame her. I heard Selena Hart is back in town.” The second lady said.
“Selena? His ex? You’re kidding!”
“No. Apparently, he made her head of PR last week. It was a bold move, right? Especially with his wife still around.”
I stopped breathing.
Selena Hart? She is back and working with Ethan?
My heart slammed against my ribcage as I turned away quickly, fingers tightening around my empty champagne glass. I needed answers and I needed Ethan.
I found him laughing—actually laughing—with two board members by the open bar, his back straight and posture easy. His eyes flicked to me as I approached, but his smile didn’t falter. That cold bastard. I stopped inches from him, ignoring the looks from the people around us.
“Can we talk?” I asked tightly.
He gave me a once-over. “Now?”
“Yes, now.”
He gave a dismissive nod to the board members and followed me into one of the side lounges. As soon as the door clicked shut behind us, I spun to face him.
“Selena?” I asked.
He didn’t even flinch. “Yes, what about her?”
“I heard that she is back and you hired her and made her as the head of PR? Are you serious, Ethan?”
He exhaled slowly, like I was a child throwing a tantrum. “It’s business, Piper. She’s good at what she does.”
I stared at him, mouth dry. “You hired your ex-girlfriend—the woman who broke you— Without even telling me.”
His eyes narrowed. “It’s not your company, It’s mine and I don’t need to run hiring decisions past you.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Right,” I whispered. “Of course, silly me. I’m just the wife, the mannequin you keep in the background.”
He looked away, jaw tightening. “You’re being emotional.”
“Damn right, I’m emotional!” I snapped. “You bring back the woman who ruined you, your family and is trying to run us—and expect me to just smile and wave?”
He gave a humorless chuckle. “There is no us, Piper. There never was.”
I felt like the ground shifted beneath me. The words hit harder than a slap. My throat ached, but I refused to cry, not here and not in front of him.
“I’m done,” I whispered. “I’m done pretending. Done fighting for scraps of your attention.”
He didn’t stop me when I walked out, he didn’t call my name, he didn’t follow.
He just let me go.
***********************
A week passed. An entire week without a word from Ethan. Not a text, not a call…….Nothing.
I moved like a ghost in that cold, glass house we called home. I ate in silence, I slept alone, I couldn’t even bring myself to cry anymore. What was the point? Tears hadn’t moved him in three years. Why would they start now?
But tonight… tonight I was done playing the fool.
I dressed simply—no makeup, no heels. Just a black blouse, fitted jeans, and my dignity.
I was going to his office.
I didn’t call ahead. I didn’t text. I was just going to walk in like I used to back when I thought love was enough to bridge the space between us.
The receptionist blinked when she saw me but said nothing as I passed her desk. I knew the layout like the back of my hand. I used to bring him lunch here and would wait hours just to ride home with him.
Now I was here for something else.
His office door was slightly ajar, and as I approached, I heard voices. It was Low.
It was a woman’s soft laugh.
My stomach twisted.
“…You shouldn’t tease me like that,” Ethan’s voice murmured.
“I missed you,” Selena’s voice purred back. “I hated every second we were apart.”
I froze. My fingers curled into fists as heat rose in my chest. My feet moved before my brain did. I pushed the door open. They were close—too close. Selena was perched on his desk, legs crossed, her hand resting on his chest like she belonged there.
Ethan looked up slowly, his face unreadable.
Selena smirked.
“Piper,” Ethan said, tone flat. “You should’ve knocked.”
I stepped inside, heart thundering. “I shouldn’t have had to.”
He moved away from her slowly, like nothing was wrong, Like I was the one intruding.
“This isn’t what it looks like,” he said.
“Really?” I asked, voice trembling. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks a hell of a lot like my husband is about to cheat on me with his ex.”
Selena laughed softly. “Oh, honey. You still think he’s your husband?”
Ethan turned to her. “Selena, don’t—” Ethan walked towards me and grabbed me by the hand. His grip firm.
“You need to leave,” he said with a cold voice. Before I could respond, he dragged me and pushed me out of the office as he slammed the door on my face.
I stood there surprised at what had happened.
Chapter 29. Ethan's POV My hand gripped the rear of my mouse harder, the heat in my office fanning my skin. I traced my fingers along the line on the mouse while my lips remained tightly pursed as my eyes took in the scene playing before my eyes. Piper stabbing Christopher in the chest with what seemed like a hidden knife…the desperation and raw….unfiltered rage in her eyes sent shivers down my spine. My breath was stuck in my lungs, unable to grasp the thought of my ex-wife being an expert fighter. That was the only way I could explain her escape from Christopher. But I'd never seen her so furious. Had she hiding something from me during our marriage? Was there more to the innocent little Piper that I tried to break with my words? My hands slowly crossed over to my thighs, gripping them tight. After staring at nothing else but my computer screen for hours, I didn't need any more explanation about why Christopher desperately wanted to get his hands on Piper. And I had to get
Chapter 28Piper's POV “Piper, you can't keep yourself locked in all day.” Mr Langford's voice bellowed outside the door. Inside my room, I buried my head even deeper under the sheets and bit my lips hard until the sour taste of blood stained my tongue. I still couldn't fathom why I had behaved like a rabid dog on heat. My heart started to pick up faster beats at the sound of his voice. I closed my second, wishing he would just leave me to wallow in my misery. My hands swiftly covered my ears when I heard him knocking again. I almost cussed at him to leave but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I remained that way for a while, with my heart slamming against my ribcage until I slowly decided to pull away and to my surprise, I could no longer hear him. Silence swallowed my room and without being told, I pushed the cover away, with my heart in my mouth and slowly sat up. “Did he really leave?” I thought to myself, feeling a mix of relief and emptiness. I wanted him to leave, right
Chapter 27Ethan's POV “Baby, this is a risky move. We can't afford to do it.” Selena raised her voice slightly. My eyes ignored the urge to take a glimpse at her. Instead, I let my gaze falter over the large, transparent window separating my office from the city. Selena was sitting in my chair in a short, slutty, red dress that barely covered her body. “I know but what would you have me do,” I grunted. “Christopher wants to take his revenge on her personally, I can't refuse that.” I added, swallowing hard. Her image floated in my head like an unwanted pest. The freckles on her face, her big, innocent eyes that would do anything but stick to their place. Selena grunted a response under her breath but I didn't care. I cracked my fingers against each other, dwelling in the thoughts of bringing Piper back to my life. .“That stubborn bitch! She just can't leave our lives, can she?” Selena clicked her teeth in frustration. We were both riled up because there was just too much at st
Chapter 26Piper's POV “Are you really not going to say anything to me?” Mr Langford’s voice seeped through the heavy silence in the car. For a second, I almost turned my eyes to look at him but I forced my head to remain stuck to the window. We were in a Lamborghini, one of the cars Ethan would never have allowed me to go near in his house. Not even if I was dying. My ex-husband would go into cardiac arrest, lose his head, and turn into a raging animal if he ever saw me near any of his luxurious cars. But here was a total stranger, reaching for me in his car. The air conditioning in the car swayed against my skin, making me snuggle closer to my sweater, pulling further away from Jace. I hated being in that position but I just couldn't help it. Ruby's face was flashing in my head like a police siren. The burning glare on her face made my skin crawl with fear. My mind was far gone into the distance. Something about her actions reminded me of Selena. The woman who ruined my marria
Chapter 25Piper's POV“This is the board room.” Ruby's voice finally broke through the thick air of silence between us. Her brown eyes sharply cut through my gaze as she pushed a huge, transparent glass door open. The burning glare on her face almost burned through my skin….if it could. “Uhm…yeah…thank you….” I stuttered, clinging at the sleeve of my sweater as I walked in. The walk from my office down to this place had to be the longest walk of my life. Ruby kept muttering cuss words under her breath. A strong, sweet scent flushed across my nose as soon as I stepped into the board room. Two long lines of chairs and a long table stretched from the beginning of the room. As I glanced around the room, the memories of Ethan in his board room washed up in my head. Every single thing about his meeting days replayed in my head, often because I admired him the most on those days. The sharp line of his trouser gators, the crispiness of his well ironed tuxedo, his smooth, yet contrasting
Piper povBy the time we arrived at the company, one of the doormen grabbed the bags from the car, “Take those to her office.” He said to them as we all made it towards my office when Ruby appeared.“Mr Langford, you’ve returned.” She started with a smug look on her face. She darted her eyes at the shopping bags, “Is this what took you all so long?” With a single finger, she pulled one of the bags slightly open and peeped inside, then she raised her gaze to me, and ran her eyes through me with a look of disgust on her face. She then turned to Jace, “Mr Langford, you took her shopping?”“And what gives you the right to question me like that?” Jace said to her with an expressionless face as he gestured to the man with the bags where he could drop them.Ruby chuckled, very uncomfortable, “Sorry, sir, I’m just surprised to see this, it just had to be at lunch time.”He glared at her, “Did you do what I delegated you to do?” “Yes, of course, sir.” She hurried to the other side of the desk
Piper povDuring lunch time, I headed towards the cafeteria to grab something to eat. I still hadn’t received my first pay yet, and before now, I had always spent almost all my savings on transportation.I had very little money left which meant I had very slim options. I made an order for just Fre

Piper pov After picking out just a few items, I felt a mad need, and I was assisted by one of the employees at the store, who gathered them all and took them to the counter, where I paid for them all with the platinum card. I knew Jace was a billionaire which meant the platinum card would be fill
PIPER'S POV"He wants you to move in with him?" Anna asked with her gaze on the permit Mr. Langford's Secretary handed to me earlier today."Apparently.", I replied nervously biting my fingers."Do you think that's a great idea?" Anna asked, her brows curled." Well, I told him I love very far away
