“I’m telling you, divorce Jason”

I watched her mischievous smile turn serious as she stared me down. I smiled, deciding to finally play into her games, curious to see what else she had in store for me.

“Didn’t you say he was now yours? Why not tell him to divorce me instead? Or are you scared he doesn’t love you? Tell him to divorce me and I would sign the divorce papers. And Ethan? Jason can have custody of him. What? You aren’t confident in his love?” I asked mockingly as I sipped my wine.

This infuriated her more. “You think they still love you? If both of us fell into the water who do you think they would safe first?” with that she got closer and whispered. “Let’s find out who they love more. Let’s test it out”

Before I could react she grabbed my arm again and threw me into the pull with her. I couldn’t swim and called out desperately for Jason, I could see Katie smile as she saw me. My vision began to blur and I watched as Jason jumped into the pool. He swam toward Katie and I saw her throw me a smile once more. I tried to fight and reached out to Jason pleading.

“p-please Jason, I can’t swim” he kicked me away forcing me to sink quicker and I began to lose consciousness when a dark figure jumped into the water, I couldn’t see anything clearly as the figures arms wrapped around me.

“Elena!” that was the last thing I heard as the lights left my eyes.

“Elena, Elena” a voice called out to me. I slowly opened my eyes, trying to steady my blurry vision. I was on the floor, wet and wrapped in a towel. A man I didn’t really recognize held unto me. When he noticed I was awake he helped me sit up. From the side of my eyes I watched Jason and Ethan care for Katie. They carefully wrapped her in a towel and helped her up. They stormed over to me with Katie in Jason’s arms.

“Honestly Elena, I never thought you could be this despicable” Jason shouted.

“Yes mummy, how could you push Aunty Katie into the water?” Ethan joined

I stared at them in disbelief. Did they really thing I would risk my life just to hurt Katie?

“Jason I...”

He raised his hand cutting me off. “You have to apologize to Katie”

By now the man beside me was furious. “Apologize? Your wife was drowning and all you cared about was your secretary”

Jason’s gaze soften as he looked at my color drained face. “Are you okay?” he was about to reach out to me but I dodged. Taking advantage of this Katie held unto him tightly.

“But Mrs. Graham told me she could swim. She said she wanted to see who you loved more. I tried to explain to her so she wouldn’t misunderstand our relationship but she pushed me into the water”

Jason looked at her pitifully then turned back to me. His anger was back.

“You’ve really gone too far Katie”

“It’s alright Mr. Graham, I understand” she said as she threw her face in her palm, sobbing. Jason raised her face causing her to look at him and wiping her tears. Ethan held her hand comfortingly. The three of them really looked like more of the family. I just stood there like an outsider, watching them fall more into the lies she sold. I couldn’t help but shake my head. I was already feeling too weak from passing out. I was so sure I drank a good quantity of water from the pool.

The man looked at them like they were clowns performing on a street.

“So your wife was drowning but you not only chose to save your secretary, but also chose to believe her? Look around, there are cameras everywhere. I’m going to call the police to investigate the matter properly”

Hearing this Katie’s eyes were filled with fear and she looked up at Jason. “There’s no need to involve the police. I forgive Mrs. Graham”

“You’re lucky Katie is such a considerate girl. Why can’t you be more like her” with that he scooped her up and left.

The man gave me a pitiful look. “So this is what you gave up your life for?”

“Do you know me?” I asked as I stared at him.

“It doesn’t matter. First you need to go to the hospital”

I nodded at him. One strike left.

At the hospital, everyone respected the man and the doctors came out to greet him. I just stared at him, wondering who he was. They took him to the best room in the hospital and my room was filled with doctors.

“I want a full checkup on her and give her the best treatment there is”

“No problem, Mr. Grey. We would treat her with the utmost care. This are our best doctors, although I don’t think there’s any need to worry” he nodded as he followed the doctors out.

“Let me discuss the payment with the doctors. I would be right back” he said as he walked away with the doctor. I nodded and laid back on the hospital bed. I didn’t know who this Mr. Grey was but I was really grateful to him.

“I’m really sorry Katie, I don’t know why Elena is acting this way”

“It’s alright Mr. Graham, I know Mrs. Graham despises me. I’m sorry if I made you guys fight again”

“It’s okay aunty Katie, my mummy is acting really badly”

“It’s alright Ethan” Katie said as she patted Ethan’s head. “Mr. Graham, this room isn’t that good. Could you get me a room with a better view and more air?”

Jason nodded as he stroked her hair. “Of course, after this I would bring Elena to apologize to you”

He ran out to the reception. “Hey! I would love to move Katie Winslow to the hospitals VIP room”

The nurse nodded as she typed into her computer then she raised her head to face him. “I’m sorry sir, the VIP room is occupied”

“By whom? You know what? I don’t care who. I would pay double”

“I’m sorry sir, but the hospital doesn’t operate that way and besides, the VIP room is being occupied by Mr. Grey. He owns this hospital”

He stormed out, like a little boy who couldn’t get his way. “I can’t believe this hospital”

Katie sat up as she saw him. “What happened?”

“They wouldn’t give me the VIP room”

“It’s alright Mr. Graham” Katie coughed. “I don’t have to get the VIP room.

He held her, stroking her face reassuringly as Ethan held unto her hand. “Don’t worry Katie, I will find a way to get you that room”

“Yes Aunty Katie, daddy is really capable. He can get you the room”

She nodded, squeezing Ethan’s hand as she leaned on Jason’s chest. A small smile crept on her lips. “What of Mrs. Graham? What if something happened to her?”

“Don’t worry about her. This is just one of her tricks, I just didn’t think she would take it this far”

“Yes, Aunty Katie. I’m sure mummy is fine. She just wanted to get daddy’s attention”

“No, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have provoked her”

“You’re so nice aunty Katie, unlike mummy”

“That’s right. Elena needs to learn to be as considerate as you are” he said as he held Ethan. “Let’s get you that room okay?”

They helped her onto a wheelchair and left the room, going towards the VIP room. Several men in suits guarding the floor blocked them.

“What is this?” Jason asked as he looked at the men annoyed.

“You can’t go in”

“Says who? Do you know who I am?”

The men ignored him as they continued to guard the doors.

“Mr. Graham, I really don’t need this room, this men look scary”

“Don’t worry Katie, I will protect you” he turned to one of the men. “Where is your boss? Call him out here for me”

The man let out a mocking laugh. “Our boss? You don’t deserve to know who he is. Now get out of here while we are giving you a chance”

“Giving me a chance?” Jason asked angrily. “It’s obvious you don’t know who I am” he continued as he moved towards the man. Before he had time to react the man threw him to the ground, he between Katie and Ethan. Glaring at the man that pushed him he got up and straightened his clothes, pointing at the man.

“I will make sure you regret this. Just wait.”

“And who do you think you are to make him regret it?”

I sat up as I heard Jason and Ethan’s voice, my face slowly lit up, realizing that they must have come for me. I knew they cared and wouldn’t just abandon me while I was in the hospital. I got up wanting to tell Mr. Grey’s men to let them in, but then I froze as I heard Katie’s voice. They hadn’t come for me, they had come for my room. To give it to Katie, something bitter filled my mouth as I realized that they didn’t even know I was here. I sighed, not understanding what I was feeling but trying to numb it anyways, as I walked back to the bed, a sudden feeling of peace swept over me as I heard that familiar voice.

“And who do you think you are to make him regret it?”

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER SIX

I felt the hot pang of tears as we passed the gate. This was going to be the final tear I shared for the Grahams, I vowed silently as I wiped my tears, Lucas seemed to notice this and handed me his handkerchief.“thank you” I said as I gave him a weak smile.Wiping my face I could smell the faint presence of his scent on it, somehow it made me feel safe and I caught myself sniffing it. A low chuckle surprised me and I frowned as I turned and saw lucas watching me and laughing.“if you like it that much, you'd love the real thing” he said as he came closer, tilting his head enough and putting his neck closer for me to sniff.I turned red with embarrassment as I shook my hands. “n-no need, you misunderstand me”“come on now, don’t be shy” he said as he came closer, this time positioning his neck just below my nose. The veins on his neck popped as he swallowed.I pulled away and faced the window, trying to hide the embarrassment on my face. “where are we going?” I finally gathered t

She stood with my father-in-law, Noah graham and watching them with that familiar scowl brought me unpleasant memories. Jason’s parents never approved of our marriage, they always felt he was too good for me. They had bullied me for the ten years of my marriage with Jason and it was only during my pregnancy with Ethan that they gave me a little face. They still bullied me with snide remarks and would always say that they wished Ethan didn’t end up like mw. They had gotten their wish, he was more of Jason, the exact replica. When I gave birth to Ethan, the bullying began again, worse than before, and Olivia would sometimes try to prevent, me from coming close to Ethan. Before he would step in to defend me, sending his parents away and gently wiping my tears, but when Katie came all of that changed. He often joined them to bully me, c

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER FOUR

Lucas grey walked towards me and placed his hands on the shoulders of the boy in front of me.“Your son?” I asked confused. Lucas grey was never rumored to have a son. I stared between the two of them, they did share a little resemblance, but it wasn’t striking enough to be noticed at first glance.“He’s actually my brother’s son” he explained. “I adopted him after my brother and his wife’s death”That made more sense. Gerald grey, Lucas older brother and his wife died in a car accident six years ago, but no one knew anything about their son, Jake grey. Everyone thought he had died with his parents but his body was never found.“We try to keep jakes existence a secret because we suspect that his parents where actually murdered. We’re still working on finding more about the accident”I nodded, I didn’t know why he trusted me enough to tell me this and I didn’t care, all I wanted right now was to leave the hospital. I had had enough, this was the last time, I would fall victim to my fam

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER THREE

“You’re the guy from the dinner” Jason said as he turned to look at the voice. The man stood smiling, everything about his aura screaming superiority.“You have a good memory Mr. Graham, but I’m sorry, you can’t get into that room”“Look, I am grateful that you pulled my wife from that pool, but don’t think you can come here pulling this kind of stunt. This hospital and room is owned by the greys, just because you helped my wife doesn’t mean I would give you money. She didn’t need your help” The man smirked as he moved closer to Jason, locking their gazes. He could sense Jason shrinking and he laughed. “You really don’t deserve Elena”“What do you mean? Look just because...”He raised his hand cutting him off. “Trusting this woman instead of your wife, such a filial husband you are” he said sarcastically. Jason provoked by his words was about to speak when the man cut him off again.“I’m not here to take money from you. I’m actually here to see your wife. The woman you’re married to

I already said I would accompany you”The other line went silent for a while before he finally spoke. “I would pick you and Ethan later”“No need” I said“Don’t be difficult Elena. Now because he wanted Katie by his side, he pretended to care. Ever since Katie became his secretary he had adored her and neglected me. He would often buy her gifts and run to her every time she called. He would often try explaining to me.‘Katie has been the best employee and I am just rewarding her’ he would say.
