“I always knew you were a jinx” Olivia graham, my mother-in-law continues.

My once teary expression slowly turned to bitterness as I saw them at the door. She stood with my father-in-law, Noah graham and watching them with that familiar scowl brought me unpleasant memories. Jason’s parents never approved of our marriage, they always felt he was too good for me. They had bullied me for the ten years of my marriage with Jason and it was only during my pregnancy with Ethan that they gave me a little face. They still bullied me with snide remarks and would always say that they wished Ethan didn’t end up like mw. They had gotten their wish, he was more of Jason, the exact replica. When I gave birth to Ethan, the bullying began again, worse than before, and Olivia would sometimes try to prevent, me from coming close to Ethan. Before he would step in to defend me, sending his parents away and gently wiping my tears, but when Katie came all of that changed. He often joined them to bully me, calling me inconsiderate and impatient, his parents adored Katie, and they always said she was a better fit for him than I was. I shook my head, trying to push the memories.

“Are you just going to stand in the way? Move so we can get in” she said and pushed me aside, her eyes fell to my suitcase and her eyes widened. “Where do you think you’re going jinx?”

“That’s not your business, Mrs. Graham”

Her brows furrowed as she looked at me confused. “I don’t know what you’re up to but you better drop that suitcase and come cook for us”

I laughed as I turned to her. “Didn’t you call me a jinx? Do you really want a jinx to touch your food?”

Shocked by the way I was acting she slapped me, I shot her an angry look, my cheeks red and throbbing and I slapped her back. Before I could react Noah hand flung to my face.

“How dare you? Have you really grown wings?” he asked, obviously annoyed. “Do you think our son would pay attention to you if you hit his parents?”

“She should just forget it, why can’t you just be like that sweet Katie. I told Jason not to marry you, but he wouldn’t listen” Olivia added.

Fed up with them I blurted. “Well you got your wish. I’m divorcing your dear son”

This seemed to infuriate them as Noah hit me a second time, this time it was hard enough to make me stagger to the ground. I touched my lips as I tasted the metallic liquid that poured from my face, I laughed.

“You still dare to laugh? I’m going to teach you a lesson” he said as he raised his hand to hit me.

“Go ahead, and I would have you arrested for assault”

He dropped his hand and I saw a flicker of fear in his eyes. “You cannot divorce. There has never been a divorce heard in the Grahams history, are you trying to ruin us?”

I let out a low chuckle as I stood up. “If I wanted to ruin you, I would have done it by now. Make sure you get your son to sign those papers or I’m going to court”

“If you think pulling this stunt would make Jason give up on Katie, then you’re wrong, let me just call him now”

“Give up Katie? I thought they were innocent? I wonder what the media would say about Jason graham having an affair with his secretary, while still married”

“You” Noah said as he pointed to me.

“Just wait, let me call him now” Olivia said.

I sighed as I turned around about to leave this circus play when Noah grabbed me. “Where do you think you’re going?”

Olivia joined in, the two of them pulling me as they shut the door.

“Hello” that familiar voice came out from the phone.

Lucas grey paced around his office, his mind filled with Elena, he wanted to help but didn’t want to overstep his boundaries. He remembered when they were in college, she had always been nice and the best at everything, her only weakness was Jason. He wanted to confess to her when her realized that she had feelings for Jason and all he could do was support him from the side. A buzzing sound pulled him from his thoughts and he stared at the message, panic set in as he saw it.

‘Help me’ it was Elena, he grabbed his coat and ran downstairs, his assistant following closely. They got in the car and he looked up at the driver.

“Take me to the grahams residence” the driver drove off immediately and his assistant understood what was going on

“What do you want us to do Mr. Grey?” henry, his assistant asked.

“During the banquet, announce that every single cooperation with the grahams would be withdrawn and the contracts terminated. The greys have no business with the grahams anymore”

“Yes sir” he said as he bowed.

“And announce that any family that continues to work with them would be seen as an enemy to the greys and would be blacklisted. I want everyone to pull out their investments”

Jason sat in the back of the car, holding Katie, like she was a fragile art piece which could break at the slightest touch. He looked at both Ethan and Katie affectionately, his eyes said, they were his most priced possessions. Ethan laid on Katie’s lap, snuggling closer as he slept. The sound of his phone ringing pulled him from his admiration.

“Elena again, why can’t she leave me alone?” he asked annoyed as he picked up the phone, his gaze softened when he saw it was his mother calling.

“Hello”

“Jason, Elena is causing trouble again, she even hit me” she said with over exaggerated wails.

“What!” he sat up, anger washing over his face. This startled Ethan and Katie and they looked at him with concern.

“Oh son, I am only a helpless old woman and she dared to hit me and now she wants to run away”

“Don’t worry mum, we’re almost home” he said reassuringly as he got off the phone. He turned to the driver and tapped him. “Drive faster, we should be home in five minutes”

“Yes sir” the driver nodded.

Olivia laughed as she got off the phone with Jason, her body still blocking the door. “My son is on his way, you think you can hit me and run away?”

Within minutes, a convoy of cars drove into a residence. Olivia smiled. “My son is so capable, I called him and within minutes he arrived”

The door flung open and it was my turn to smile, there Lucas grey stood, his domineering presence filled the room. He went over to Noah who was holding me and kicked him, freeing me from his grip.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he crouched to ouch my face. I nodded and he turned to them, shooting them a glare.

“M-Mr. grey, what are you doing here?” Noah asked.

Olivia not understanding the gravity of the situation shot back as she helped Noah up. “Who do you think you are? This is a family matter”

Noah’s face filled with horror and he slapped her across the face. “This is Lucas Grey, he is literally the prince of emerald city. Apologize quickly”

Olivia rubbed her red face as she eyed Noah. “So what if he is a big shot? This is still a family matter” her eyes widened as she stared at me. “Or is he Elena’s lover? Did she team up with him? If not why would he help her?”

Noah, helpless, just stared at her in disbelief as he shivered. “I’m really sorry Mr. Grey” he said as he fell to his knees, he pulled Olivia down with him and she just stared at him, anger filling her face.

Lucas ignored them as he scooped me in his arms and took me away, henry followed behind with my suitcase and he gestured to his men to deal with them. I could hear their cries and pleas as Lucas placed me in the car, when we were ready to go his men retreated and followed. I noticed a car speeding past us, I smiled as I realized it was Jason, I slowly closed my eyes almost satisfied.

Jason ran into the house and was shocked to see his parents bleeding on the floor, he ran to them.

“What happened? Did Elena do this? She is really going too far”

“It was Lucas Grey” his father said as Jason helped him to stand up.

“That brat, she teamed up with her big shot lover to do this to us” his mother caused. “Just look what she did” she said as she showed off her bruises.

“Mrs. Graham really did go too far to get your attention. She’s just angry, don’t fight with her, maybe you should apologize” Katie said, feigning sweetness.

“Me? Apologize? She...”

“Daddy look” Ethan said as he pointed at the papers on the table.

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER SIX

I felt the hot pang of tears as we passed the gate. This was going to be the final tear I shared for the Grahams, I vowed silently as I wiped my tears, Lucas seemed to notice this and handed me his handkerchief.“thank you” I said as I gave him a weak smile.Wiping my face I could smell the faint presence of his scent on it, somehow it made me feel safe and I caught myself sniffing it. A low chuckle surprised me and I frowned as I turned and saw lucas watching me and laughing.“if you like it that much, you'd love the real thing” he said as he came closer, tilting his head enough and putting his neck closer for me to sniff.I turned red with embarrassment as I shook my hands. “n-no need, you misunderstand me”“come on now, don’t be shy” he said as he came closer, this time positioning his neck just below my nose. The veins on his neck popped as he swallowed.I pulled away and faced the window, trying to hide the embarrassment on my face. “where are we going?” I finally gathered t

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER FOUR

Lucas grey walked towards me and placed his hands on the shoulders of the boy in front of me.“Your son?” I asked confused. Lucas grey was never rumored to have a son. I stared between the two of them, they did share a little resemblance, but it wasn’t striking enough to be noticed at first glance.“He’s actually my brother’s son” he explained. “I adopted him after my brother and his wife’s death”That made more sense. Gerald grey, Lucas older brother and his wife died in a car accident six years ago, but no one knew anything about their son, Jake grey. Everyone thought he had died with his parents but his body was never found.“We try to keep jakes existence a secret because we suspect that his parents where actually murdered. We’re still working on finding more about the accident”I nodded, I didn’t know why he trusted me enough to tell me this and I didn’t care, all I wanted right now was to leave the hospital. I had had enough, this was the last time, I would fall victim to my fam

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER THREE

“You’re the guy from the dinner” Jason said as he turned to look at the voice. The man stood smiling, everything about his aura screaming superiority.“You have a good memory Mr. Graham, but I’m sorry, you can’t get into that room”“Look, I am grateful that you pulled my wife from that pool, but don’t think you can come here pulling this kind of stunt. This hospital and room is owned by the greys, just because you helped my wife doesn’t mean I would give you money. She didn’t need your help” The man smirked as he moved closer to Jason, locking their gazes. He could sense Jason shrinking and he laughed. “You really don’t deserve Elena”“What do you mean? Look just because...”He raised his hand cutting him off. “Trusting this woman instead of your wife, such a filial husband you are” he said sarcastically. Jason provoked by his words was about to speak when the man cut him off again.“I’m not here to take money from you. I’m actually here to see your wife. The woman you’re married to

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER TWO

“I’m telling you, divorce Jason” I watched her mischievous smile turn serious as she stared me down. I smiled, deciding to finally play into her games, curious to see what else she had in store for me.“Didn’t you say he was now yours? Why not tell him to divorce me instead? Or are you scared he doesn’t love you? Tell him to divorce me and I would sign the divorce papers. And Ethan? Jason can have custody of him. What? You aren’t confident in his love?” I asked mockingly as I sipped my wine. This infuriated her more. “You think they still love you? If both of us fell into the water who do you think they would safe first?” with that she got closer and whispered. “Let’s find out who they love more. Let’s test it out”Before I could react she grabbed my arm again and threw me into the pull with her. I couldn’t swim and called out desperately for Jason, I could see Katie smile as she saw me. My vision began to blur and I watched as Jason jumped into the pool. He swam toward Katie and I s

  • THE COST OF GOODBYE    CHAPTER ONE

“You don’t need to come. I know you don’t like these dinners” Jason Graham, my ever loving husband said over the phone“That’s alright. I already said I would accompany you”The other line went silent for a while before he finally spoke. “I would pick you and Ethan later”“No need” I said“Don’t be difficult Elena. I would pick you up”Without waiting for her response he disconnected the call. He had begged her before to come with him to the dinner, and when she didn’t comply he gave her the cold shoulder. Now because he wanted Katie by his side, he pretended to care. Ever since Katie became his secretary he had adored her and neglected me. He would often buy her gifts and run to her every time she called. He would often try explaining to me.‘Katie has been the best employee and I am just rewarding her’ he would say. At first I believed him and would often praise him for being such a good boss. But then I noticed the mistakes and I read the messages. Katie wasn’t one of the best empl
