Boundaries erased

Cassandra woke to the smell of woodsmoke and the warmth of Dante's body pressed against hers.

The fire had burned down to embers, casting the small cabin in a dim, orange glow. She was still on the sofa, the file clutched to her chest like a lifeline. Dante was beside her, his arm draped across her waist, his breathing slow and steady.

For a moment, she forgot everything. The file. Her grandmother's betrayal. The danger that lurked outside these walls. She just felt him—his warmth, his strength, the steady beat of his heart against her back.

Then the weight of yesterday crashed back down on her.

She sat up slowly, careful not to wake him. The file slipped from her grasp, pages scattering across the floor. She stared at them—her mother's handwriting, her grandmother's name—and felt the anger rise in her throat like bile.

Dante stirred. His eyes fluttered open, finding her immediately.

"Cassandra?"

She didn't turn around. "I need to call her."

He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Your grandmother?"

"Yes." Her voice was flat. "I need to hear it from her. I need to know why."

Dante was quiet for a moment. Then he reached for her hand. "Be careful. She might not be what she seems."

Cassandra finally looked at him. Her eyes were red, hollow. "She raised me. She loved me. And she lied to me my whole life."

"I know." He squeezed her hand. "But people lie for many reasons. Some of them are even good ones."

Cassandra pulled her hand away. She found her phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed.

---

The call connected after two rings.

"Cassandra?" Evelyn's voice was shaky, uncertain. "Sweetheart, where are you? I've been so worried—"

"Did you do it?" Cassandra cut her off. Her voice was cold, hard. "Did you help them kill my mother?"

Silence.

Then a choked sob. "Cassandra—"

"Answer the question."

"I—" Evelyn's voice cracked. "I didn't have a choice. They threatened you. They said if I didn't help them, they would kill you. You were just a baby. I couldn't—"

"So you gave them my mother." Cassandra's voice rose. "You sacrificed her to save me."

"I tried to protect you both." Evelyn was crying now. "I thought if I gave them what they wanted, they would let her go. I was wrong. I was so wrong."

Cassandra's hand shook. "You let her die. You let them kill her. And then you lied to me. For twenty years."

"I was ashamed." Evelyn's voice was barely a whisper. "I was terrified you'd hate me. I couldn't lose you too."

Cassandra closed her eyes. Tears burned behind her lids, but she refused to let them fall. Not now. Not for this.

"I trusted you," she said quietly. "You were the only family I had. And you've been lying to me my entire life."

"I love you, Cassandra. I love you more than anything."

"Then why didn't you tell me the truth?"

Silence.

Cassandra ended the call.

---

She sat there for a long moment, the phone clutched in her hand. She didn't cry. She was too angry. Too betrayed. The tears would come later, she knew. But right now, all she felt was rage.

Dante sat beside her. He didn't speak. He just waited.

"She did it," Cassandra finally said. "She helped them. She helped cover up my mother's death."

Dante reached for her hand. She let him take it.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

"I don't want sorry." Her voice cracked. "I want to make this right. I want to expose every single person who had a hand in my mother's death. Including her."

Dante pulled her into his arms. She didn't resist. She sank into him, her face buried in his chest.

"I'll help you," he said. "Whatever it takes."

---

The day stretched on, slow and heavy.

Cassandra couldn't sit still. She paced the cabin, her mind churning. The file. The evidence. The traitor Adrian had warned her about. Someone inside Dante's circle. Someone close.

She needed to think. She needed to plan. But every time she tried, her mind drifted back to Evelyn. To the lies. To the betrayal.

Dante watched her, his heart aching. He knew what it was like to have your world shattered. To discover the people you loved weren't who you thought they were.

He crossed the room, stopping in front of her. "You need to rest."

"I can't."

"You need to eat."

"I'm not hungry."

He cupped her face, forcing her to look at him. "You need to let me take care of you."

Her eyes searched his. Something in her expression shifted—softened. She leaned into his touch.

"I don't know how to do that," she whispered. "I've been taking care of myself for so long. I don't know how to let anyone in."

"You've let me in."

"That's different."

"How?"

She didn't answer. She just looked at him—really looked at him. His eyes. His lips. The way he was holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

She kissed him.

It wasn't soft. It was desperate. Hungry. She needed to feel something other than pain. She needed him.

Dante pulled back, his breath ragged. "Are you sure?"

She nodded. "I need you. I need this."

---

They made love on the sofa, the fire casting shadows across their bodies.

It wasn't like before—not frantic or urgent. It was slow. Tender. A connection that went beyond the physical.

He touched her everywhere, his hands gentle, his lips warm. She arched into him, her nails digging into his back. He whispered her name like a prayer.

When they finished, they lay tangled together, their breath mingling, their hearts beating in sync.

Cassandra rested her head on his chest. The world was still dangerous. The truth was still painful. But in this moment, she felt whole.

---

Later, they sat by the fire, the file spread out between them.

"We need a plan," Cassandra said. "The evidence is here. We need to use it."

Dante nodded. "We go public. We expose Marcus Kane. We end this."

"And the traitor? Adrian said someone in your circle is working with Marcus."

Dante's jaw tightened. "We'll find them. We'll root them out."

"How?"

He looked at her. "We'll set a trap. We'll use the file as bait. Whoever comes for it is the traitor."

Cassandra nodded slowly. It was dangerous. It was risky. But it was the only way.

"Okay," she said. "We do it."

---

That night, Cassandra's phone rang.

It was Adrian. His voice was tense, urgent.

"There's a traitor in the mansion. Someone close to Marcus Kane. Someone inside Dante's circle."

Cassandra's blood ran cold. "Who?"

"I don't know. But they know about the file. They're coming for it. Tonight."

It was like looking into a mirror that showed her future."Cassandra," Adrian said softly, rising from his chair. "This is Daniel. Your father."Her father. The word felt foreign. Wrong.
