Chapter 1: The Frequency That Should Not Exist

last update publish date: 2026-09-21 17:19:21

Forty-three days.

That’s what the escort said when they pulled me out. I quit counting long ago. Days stopped meaning anything once the dark stayed the same.

The cell was small. Stone on every side. The floor is always wet. Not deep puddles, just that constant damp that soaked through the thin clothes and never left. Air smelled like wet rock, old piss, rust, and blood that stayed in the cracks no matter how many times they hosed the place. My blood. Other people too. The smell sat thick in the back of your throat.

Water dripped behind the left wall. Slow. Keeps its own time. Cold lived on the floor. Climb your legs even when you pull them in tight. Fingers stayed stiff. Lips cracked and bled if you forgot and tried to talk.

The sound moved strangely there. Boots on corridor stone. Keys. Guys laughing too loud over cards or arguing about nothing. Every noise locked my shoulders. I got good at telling when a guard was just walking past and when he stopped. Stopping meant trouble.

My wolf went quiet fourteen months earlier. One day she was still there, weak, muttering in the back of my head. Next day nothing. No fight. No last word. Just shut down. I called her for weeks. Then I stopped. Easier.

Northern Labor wasn't a regular prison. Everyone on the inside knew that. Built for wolves the Packs wanted gone but couldn’t kill clean. High-status ones. Political problems. People who knew too much or got in the way of the wrong Alpha. The isolation wing was the worst part. No windows. No real schedule. Guards who looked the other way if money changed hands. Word was the place got expanded years back, before Lindsay took the throne. Some of the deeper cells were made to break the animal first. Starve it quietly. Keep the body alive long enough to learn it had no more fight left. I didn’t know if the stories were all true. I only knew what the dark felt like from the inside.

They came when the drip was the only sound left.

Key scraped the lock. The door shoved open. White light hit hard enough to make my eyes water. Three shapes. Cheap soap, sweat, sour drink. One voice I knew from before.

“Still breathing?”

Didn’t answer.

Hands grabbed my arms and yanked me up. My shoulder popped. Pain shot down my side. I stayed limp. Fighting only made it last longer. They shoved me into the wall. The stone took the skin off my back. The first punch landed in the ribs. The air is gone. I folded. Second one across the face. Skin split. Blood ran warm and sticky down my jaw. Someone laughed. Boot found my thigh. Then my hip. I hit the floor. Concrete chewed my palms and knees.

I curled. Arms over head. Knees in. Same position every time the boots came. Blows kept landing. Back. Side. One grabbed my hair and pulled my head up just to look at my face.

“Doesn’t even make noise anymore.”

Eyes shut. Short breaths. Waiting.

Then something moved in my chest.

Deep. Past the quiet place where my wolf had been sleeping. Pressure. Suddenly. Hard. Like something long buried shoving upward. She opened one eye. Not all the way. Just enough.

Three heartbeats.

That was all it took.

The pressure cracked outward. Not a sound I heard with my ears. Something older. Rolled through the floor under us. The men froze. One cursed. Another stepped back so fast he hit the wall. The air got tighter, like the stone leaned in.

Metal taste on my tongue. Ears ringing. For those three heartbeats I felt her again. Thin. Mad. Scared. Then she sank back down, worn out. Silence returned. But it had been enough.

New boots. Heavier ones. Voice that gave orders instead of taking them.

“Step away from her. Now.”

Hands left. I stayed down. Cheek on the wet stone. Short breaths. More light. More voices. Someone swore when they saw the blood. Another talked about papers and a seal.

I caught pieces while they pulled me up.

“Royal order.”

“From Lindsay’s office.”

“Immediate release. No delays.”

Lindsay. The Lycan King. Even down here his name carried real weight. Pack Alphas could argue with each other for years over borders and bloodlines. One word from the King’s office ended the argument in a day. Anderson used to talk about it when I was younger. How careful you had to be when Lindsay’s people showed up. How territories shifted if the King decided a Pack had stepped out of line. How some Alphas lost everything because they forgot the throne still sat above them. Border Packs had been restless for months. A few stopped sending the usual reports. Others were quietly making side deals. Lindsay’s inspectors had been moving through the northern territories for weeks, asking questions, checking records, watching who flinched. Nobody wanted to be the Pack that drew the wrong kind of attention while the King was already looking for excuses to tighten control. I never thought that name would have anything to do with me sitting on a wet floor in isolation.

They threw a rough blanket around my shoulders. Smelled of dust and old disinfectant. Legs barely held. Walked me out through corridors I hadn’t seen in months. Iron gates. Checkpoints. Guards looked at the papers in the escort’s hand and then looked away fast. Nobody wanted trouble with a royal seal.

Open air hits like a slap. Cold. Wet. Pine and rain and smoke somewhere far off. Eyes watered. Keep them half closed.

Black car waiting near the outer gate.

Anderson stood beside it.

Same dark hair. Same straight posture. Same face. He stepped forward the second he saw me. Arms were already opening like he expected me to run the last few steps the way I used to when I was sixteen and still believed he would always catch me.

I stopped three feet short.

“Alpha.”

Word came out flat.

His arms dropped. The smile he had ready cracked a little.

“Sandy.” Said my name like he was checking it still worked. “You’re free. Came as soon as they called. Order came from higher up. Lindsay’s people. Don’t have all the details yet. But when the King’s office sends a seal like that, you don’t ask questions. You just move. Especially now. Border Packs are restless. Inspectors have been asking about old cases and missing records. The last thing any of us need is extra eyes while Lindsay is already looking for reasons to remind everyone who sits above the Alphas.”

Nodded once. The blanket slipped. Caught it and held on tighter.

He reached for my elbow. I stepped back before his fingers could land. Not big. Just enough.

He noticed. Hand hung in the air a second. Then fell to his side.

“Get in. We’ll talk on the way.”

Back seat. He took the front. The car smelled like leather and the same cologne he’d worn for years. Everything familiar except the space between us.

Drove in silence for a long stretch. Trees moved past in dark shapes. I watched them because looking at him felt like work I didn’t have left in me.

After a while he cleared his throat.

“Guests at the estate. Important ones. Connected to the Lycan King. Lindsay himself might come later this week. Politics are delicate right now. Some of the border Packs have stopped sending the usual reports. A couple are making quiet deals they shouldn’t. Lindsay’s inspectors have been moving up and down the northern line for weeks. Asking about old sentences. Missing files. Anything that looks like a Pack tries to bury a problem. Maria’s been helping get everything ready. She’s been careful. Don’t make things harder for her. She’s already been through enough. The last thing we need is extra attention while the King’s people are watching every move.”

Eyes on the window.

“I understand.”

Glanced at me in the mirror. “You’re quiet.”

“Tired.”

Another stretch of road. He tried again.

“Old room if you want. Or a guest suite. Whatever’s easier right now.”

“The guest suite is fine.”

I didn't like that answer. Hands tightened on the wheel.

Bruises on my arms were darkening under the thin sleeves. One on the left wrist looked especially bad. Purple is already going black at the edges. He noticed when we slowed for a curve. Turned in his seat and reached toward it. Fingers already moving to push the sleeve up.

“Christ, Sandy, what did they—”

I flinched.

Full body. Arms up. Head tucked. Shoulders locked the exact way they locked in the cell when the boots started landing. The blanket fell into my lap. Breath stopped for a full second.

He froze.

Hand still in the air between us. Eyes wide. Mouth a little open. It looked like someone had just shown him a version of me he had never met.

I lowered my arms slowly. Forced air back into my lungs. Picked up the blanket and wrapped it around myself again, tighter this time.

I didn't speak for a long while.

When he finally did, his voice was different. Careful in a way that didn’t used to belong to him.

“Sandy… what happened to you in there?”

I watched the road ahead.

“Nothing that matters now.”

He kept staring like he was trying to match the girl he remembered with the person sitting behind him. The one who expected the next hit to come from his own hand.

The car kept moving. He faced forward again.

Didn’t reach for me after that.

And for the first time since the engine started, the silence between us felt honest.

Still carrying towels when he found me again. Hated this moment.Late morning. Back stairs. Service corridor. Basket in my arms. Towels cooled off but still smelled like soap. Shoulders ached. Bruises pulled under the sleeves every time the basket shifted. He stepped in front of me. Blocked the path.“Put that down.”Set the basket on the floor. Straightened slowly. The stone under my shoes felt cold.Same look on his face as earlier. Sharp. Sure.“I’ve had enough of this act. The quiet. The servant works. Looking at everyone like you’re the one who got hurt. You’re going to tell the truth. Now.”Didn’t speak.“Admit what you did. Apologize to Maria. To Anderson. To Mrs. Elizabeth. Stop pretending you’re innocent.”Hallway empty. Just us. Kitchen noises are far off. Pans. Someone calling for plates. Steam is still in the air. Soap and wet cloth.“I didn’t do it.”The voice came out flat. No extra words. No begging. No convincing. He stared. Waited for more. When nothing else came, his

Morning light came through the guest room window.I got up early. My body was still sore. Bruises under the sleeves ached when I moved. I washed my face with cold water from the basin. The water smelled clean. Almost sharp. Put on the plain clothes someone left folded on the chair. Loose shirt. Dark pants. Nothing that stood out.The house was already awake. Footsteps in the halls. Voices from the kitchen. Smell of coffee and toast and something frying. I stood by the window for a minute and listened. The wolf stayed quiet. Same empty space. No push. No comment on the familiar smells.I knew Mrs. Elizabeth’s routine by heart. Medication at eight. Light breakfast after. Check her temperature if she looks pale. Make sure she drank enough water. Sit with her if the joint pain is bad. I had done it for years before the prison. Better than anyone. That used to be my place in the mornings.I walked toward her rooms on the first floor. The carpet is soft under my feet. Same as yesterday. The

I waited till the house got quieter.Dinner is still going downstairs. Music. Voices. Glasses. Chairs. Stayed in the guest room till most of it faded. Then I left. The hallway felt longer. Same carpet. Soft. Worn down the middle. Soft lights on the walls. Steps almost silent. Knew where I was headed. The old greenhouse.Back of the east wing. Glass walls. Stone floor. Mrs. Elizabeth and I used to spend hours there. She taught me the plant names. Ones for fever. Ones that calmed a restless wolf. Shelves are always neat. Jars with handwritten labels. A small table by the window. She sat there when her health was bad. Some days she could barely stand. I’d carry the trays. Sit with her while she sorted leaves. She hummed. Soft. Off-key. Sound of scissors cutting stems. Cool cloth on my forehead when I was sick. Said the air in here was better than medicine. That room was the one place that felt like it belonged to both of us.Used to shift here. Back when the wolf still answered. Moonligh

The car turned through the main gates just after noon.Gravel under the tires. Same crunch. Long curve up the drive. The estate looked the same from outside. Tall stone. Dark windows. Old oak by the east wing. Everything is still in its place.Anderson parked near the front steps. Got out first. Came around like he meant to open my door. I got out on my own. The blanket is still around my shoulders. Held onto it. The air smelled like cut grass and kitchen smoke and the faint wet of the fountain out front. Two servants stood by the entrance. Young ones. Faces I didn’t know. They looked at me. Then at Anderson. Then back at me. Waiting for someone to say who I was.“Guest suite on the second floor,” Anderson said. “Make sure it’s ready.”One nodded and went inside. The other stared a second longer before following. No one said my name.We walked in. The front hall smelled of polish and fresh flowers and something sweet baking. Boxes stacked along one wall.
