Haelyn's POV
Rand was right. By the time the first round of the battle was over and the men had stumbled into the mess hall or dragged themselves in rather, my wound had healed itself on the outside. I still felt pain, but I wasn't bleeding any more. That, I could survive. The man who had spoken to us earlier walked in with three elite soldiers flanking him on both sides. They called him Riven, but to us, he was Master Riven. I wondered why he couldn't walk in alone. Why did he even need his guards to be with us in the same hall? Was he that afraid of injured fighters? A dangerous smile formed on his face and he inhaled deeply. "Yes, the smell of blood. You all will get used to this smell. Reminds me of the warring times, and the battlegrounds, and the iron. Now, let me bring to your notice the results of this first round. We counted a total of one hundred and two fighters. You all had balls, I thought someone would chicken out, but no. All fought and the ones who survived are right here in his mess hall, which would be your new home until the Alpha Trials is finished. "Meanwhile, sixty five of you are left, including those who didn't die off. They get another chance. Tend to your wounds. The next round will start tomorrow." There were some murmurs and groans of unacceptance among the fighters, but Master Riven paid none any attention. "Food will be served twice a day. Now I know you didn't eat this morning, but you all will get your rations later tonight. Going to Alpha Roy's palace is strictly forbidden. You can face the other way into town if some of you are thinking of getting some ladies for the night or a beer rather. Can't deny you such. But before that, you will be marked so we know who we are letting in and out. Is that clear?" Strangled responses. "Is that clear?" Master Riven repeated, his voice louder. "Clear!" came the non-unanimous chorus. "Yes, more like it," he said and stepped closer. "Now, I'll tell you all something for free. Alpha Roy wouldn't want this, but it'll help. Some of you don't have what it takes to proceed to the next round. That girt. So how about you just kill the better of you all in your sleep?" The grin that appeared on Master Riven's face was a wicked one. I looked around and noticed that the rest of us were staring at each other. I knew they weren't seeking for one another's opinion, but doing exactly what Master Riven had just said. Look for the most formidable opponents and take them out while they sleep so we don't get to face them in battle. That was the worst way for a warrior to die I had heard off. Someone got up. It was Roan. "You tell us to do this, but where is the honor in it?" "Honor? You aren't warriors yet. You have no honor." "Yet we are men, and we have something to fight for. So, yes, we do have honor." Master Riven shook his head, and smiled as if he was arguing with an underage child who could not pay attention. "The seat of the Alpha King, is it?" Riven said lackadaisically, then chuckled. "Tell me something, Roan, son of Alpha Devon. Why the hell are you here fighting in the Alpha Trials? Are you trying to prove something to your father?" I looked at Roan. He was taller than most of the men in that room. Eyes were golden-brown and his hair was auburn. Last when I saw him, he always had this look of confidence on his face, accompanied with a smirk. But now, he looked as if he had the whole world on his shoulders and didn't know how to put it down. "I don't need to prove anything to my father, Master Riven." "Or maybe to yourself rather." Roan opened his arms and showed the scars that ran up and down them. "I have been battle tested before, and I am better than all the man here. You say we aren't warriors but I dare you to put some of your elite soldiers in the ring with me and see if they'll come out alive." The rest of the fighters cheered and banged their hands in the benches and tables, creating noise. "Enough!" Master Riven's voice boomed. "You might be the heir to the throne of Claw Pack, but here, Roan, know your place! Or you might just get your wish." Roan said nothing and sat back down. After Master Riven left, Rand attended to those who were injured. I looked around and saw that he didn't have much of that blue potion to give out. When it finally ran out, he took out his tools and got to work. Someone came to stand beside me. I looked up. Familiar face, but curious enough. He had a gash on the right side of his cheekbones. Was still noticeable amidst the stubble. "I'm Killian." "Bernard." "Good fight back there." I nodded. "Who did you fight?" "Some mistake who should never have come here." I said nothing. "Are you a mistake?" he asked. "Are you?" I asked. His emerald-green eyes pierced through me like a haunting soul. Then Killian smiled and walked away. It was a good thing I already had an hideout, one that was already compromised. Though I had killed the intruders. I got to my feet, swayed a little when I felt pain from inside. I swallowed headed for the door. Someone spat out blood right in my path, waved an apology at me and looked away. "Hey!" came from behind me. I knew that voice. It was Weston's. Good, so his throat was back. "What?" I asked. "As you walk out, don't come back. For your own good." I said nothing and left the mess hall. There was every possibility that blood would be spilled in that mess hall later on. And I didn't want to be a part of that. No matter what happened, I wouldn't sleep one night in that mess hall. Or that would surely be the end of my revenge plan. Just as I took a step out, I stopped. Just some yards away stood the man I wanted to kill. Alpha Roy.Haelyn's POVI left his broken hand at once and walked to the other end of the barricade. Then I sprinted across and used my foot to bring my opponent's face to the floor.Since there was no weapon to be provided, I'd have to shut him down.I waited for the barricade to unlock but the soldiers made no move to do so.I looked up and Master Riven walked back to the hosts. I thought he was going to Roy's side but he changed direction and went straight to Freya. The crowd clapped for me when I kicked my opponent in the face but they soon became restless. I heard a lot of them clamoring for a weapon to be thrown into the battleground. I couldn't blame them anyway. What they had come to see was blood and they wanted that need to be satisfied. But what the hell was happening? Had Freya seen the woman in me and wanted to ask Riven who the hell I was? Or had I been recognized? I quickly turned my face away from that spot. Though the slits, I saw Weston waving at me. There was a wicked smile
Freya's POVI laughed. And it took a while before it finally died down. What did I feel when she said that? Just humor."Here you are talking about his majesty and how there haven't been any talks about his deposition. Not you're telling me to let him go?""If you feel that he is getting out of hand, my lady. Then you might have to find a replacement. You have been showing the hand of mercy for a long time now. Maybe it is time to show the other hand of judgment."She had her way with words, that woman. Knew how to use it in a paradoxical manner that impressed me. But I didn't like the sound of what she wanted me to do. She wasn't being so direct about it but I could tell that it was a direct conception.Roy might think he owned the throne just because he was the one sitting on it. But I was the one who pulled the strings and kept him there. Half of the advisers on his council reported to me so I was always kept in the loop about the things he did. Most of them, he never even asked my
Freya's POVI stepped out of bed that morning, my mind still on the information which had been brought to my hearing by one of my maids.According to her, one of the coincilwomen had been fired by his majesty. I asked her what the reason was and she simply told me it was a matter that I should take it up with his majesty.I dismissed her and decided to wait until the morrow before bringing up the topic.First thing I did was plant a kiss on his cheek letting him think that I hadn't woken up on the wrong side of the bed. Then I got off and headed for the window without pulling on my afterdress just yet.One thing I had learned about Roy over the years was that he listened to me and did what I usually wanted him to because of my body .He was so much obsessed with my figure that he always looked forward to heavenly fun in bed. And I never disappointed him. It was a powerful way to get him under my thumb. Sex and sex and more sex was the therapy to a man like Alpha Roy. So I kept it comi
Haelyn's POV"Tell me!" I yelled at him."Alright, alright. As compared to your last fight with me, the person you're fighting with won't give you much of a problem. Heard he broke his arm in the the last fight and it still hasn't healed properly."I breathed a sigh of relief, unable to hide it. Weston saw it and gave me a pitiful look. He was messing with my head. Like some bad demon riding on my shoulders in the night and whispering bad things that could happen to me anytime soon."Get out, Weston.""Scratch my back and I scratch yours. Anyway, I'll tell you what I need you to do when you walk out later."I scoffed. "And what makes you think I'll be the one walking out alive? What if I die in there?" "Your opponent has a broken arm and to use a weapon effectively, he needs the strength of both hands.""I don't believe that." "Well, believe it, man. Because it is the truth. I've been trained well enough to understand it. So it's going to be easy peasy for you. Why would you even l
Haelyn's POV"Thirteens!"The fighters went into the battle place and got ready to go at themselves. The signal was given and the fight began.I watched the ground instead. It was stained with blood of the fighters who had been in there already. And half of them hadn't come out alive.Killian had it easy with his opponent and he'd be strong enough for the next fight. I guessed it would be the next day, since everything was gamed and the sponsors wouldn't want to give a resting spell to the fighters. The blows fell but I wasn't even looking. My mind was elsewhere. I was trying as hard as I could to shut out the screams and the grunts of pain in of my head.I had never been so close to brutal fights, and it was having a negative effect on me. Seemed like I was better off on the battleground trying to survive than being out on the sidelines watching it all unfold. The weapon fell from the hand of Master Riven. It was a tomahawk which had a chain attached to it. At the end of this chain,
Haelyn's POVWhat had just happened?Killian had operated that shield as if he was used to it. Even I had never seen that shield used before in training. Maybe they kept it for other purposes that clearly defined war."Our disgraced warrior wins!" Riven announced."Uh oh," Weston said. "You hear that?""I heard that. What the hell is Ruben talking about?"Weston turned to me with a smirk. "Seems like Killian used to be one of them. Elite warriors."That hit me hard. "So that means he's from Silver Pack," I said."Yeah. We finally have an elite soldier amongst us."Yeah, I'd been hoping that I'd get the opportunity to fight with one of them. Just to show the rest that they could be beaten. To prove that they weren't that invincible as they saw themselves to be.Killian and Riven were locked in a stare for some moments before the soldiers came in and pushed him out of the battleground. I felt that enmity between the two. Seemed like Killian had a past that wasn't too different from mine
