Keeping my promise

Nolan’s POV

Emily is devastated, I knew she would. Hunter will always see her as a human, not for what she is.

But I will not tell anyone the secret; they will turn her into a lab specimen. Emily is the first wolf in three generations to give birth, and that changes everything. Wolves like us have been unable to breed with our own kind for years, while humans have interbred with us. Now, Emily is proof that it can happen. For the wolves, it means hope, a future, a chance to survive. For humans, it means fear or opportunity. I’m still jealous; it wasn’t my child, but then again, I was just a warrior.

Minx, my wolf, is still driving me insane and begs for closeness. I can’t. She is going through a lot of feelings right now and a hormonal change.

I held her close as she sobbed, taking in her scent even though it fills the room.

Jay cried, and she picked him up, sat down, and began feeding him. She didn’t care if I was staring at her.

I walked outside and took a deep breath. I need to plan; we need to leave soon. Clearing my head, I realized that I could never be away from her and that she would be safe, because I would make sure of that.

When I got back, she was asleep, and I sat down watching her sleep. After a while, she started to dream again, screaming,” Don’t touch me, Domus”. Domus was the man who had haunted her for years, leaving scars no one could see. I shook her. Jay started to cry, and she picked him up and fed him. Nolan, don’t leave me, she said, crying, her hand reaching out for me.

I lay down on the bed. Sleep. I won’t leave you, Emily. Minx was happy; we were close to her. I slept.

I heard the baby's sucking sounds as I opened my eyes, and my arm was resting on her, and I didn’t want to move.

Her hand touched mine. Nolan, she whispered, and I tried to pull my hand back. Her fingers stopped me.

My face was so close to her neck. “You’re welcome, Emily," I said. I will go to get you breakfast. This little guy is sucking all the calories out of you. We chuckled.

I was walking back when I saw the guard at the door. Fuck. Kaden took her. Keep your cool, I told myself, even though inside I was screaming and Minx was growling.

What’s going on? I asked him

Kaden took the human. He chuckled. I think he wants a son, too.

I wanted to punch him. Where is the baby?

The women took him with them from now on.

I had to think. The supplies were ready at the hiding place; I just needed Emily and the baby. I walked to the dungeon to see who the guard was.

Hey, can you let me in? Please.

I walked inside the cell. Kaden took her Hunter, and it is now harder to extract her. Fucking asshole couldn’t wait, I told him, he is a violent pig.

You touched her, he said to me.

Touch her? You destroyed her; she is shattered. You do not deserve her, Hunter. My loyalty no longer belongs to you. She loves you, and you chose wrong.

He laughed. You’re in love with her; listen to me carefully. She is mine!

Not anymore, I will not let you…

He was raging, pulling at his chains. She is human; she is with us for breeding.

I looked sad at him. Yeah, I figured that’s what you’ll say, that’s not love. And now your brother is trying to use her. I spat at his feet. Hunter, do not cross my path ever again.

“I love her, he shouted.

 You didn’t, never did, I thought, cursing.

Walked into the dining room, trying to find out where she was. In his bedroom, of course. I wondered where Isabella was?

I knocked at his office door. Then entered.

Ahhh, Nolan, what do you want?

Well, my job is done. I was wondering what my duty is now?

He looked surprised. How about guard: take a shift. The list is posted in the dining area.

Thank you, then I turned and left. Walked further on the long hallway and stopped at the alpha’s bedroom. I listen, sounds like no one is there.

I opened the door to see Emily chained to the bed. Minx growled. Someone was coming, so I closed the door and went into the other room.

How long will it be before she can have children? Kaden was shouting at the midwife.

Needs time, you will hurt her if …

Do you think I will care if I hurt her? Can she get pregnant?

I’m not sure, she’s still breastfeeding, the midwife's shaking voice said

Kaden dismissed her. Fucking pig. I was so angry, I needed a plan fast, time to check in the favors.

I waited for everyone to go to bed. Ted watched the hallway. I had one bullet in the shotgun; that’s all I needed, but my plan was to be quiet.

Kaden was talking to her. Emily was screaming, probably fighting him. I opened the door, took him by surprise, and hit his head hard. He dropped on the floor. Blood is seeping from the gash.

Checked his pocket; the keys were there. Took her chain off and carried her outside. Ted pointed to the woman waiting for us in the woods with the baby.

 Emily, this is it, look at me. Can you walk? She nodded. Her shirt was ripped, so I took my jacket off and put it on her. Let’s go.

The woman handed us Jay, and we took off. I aimed for east, along the river. Hopefully, the fucker will stay asleep until morning.

Nolan, she whispered, “Why did you save me?

Because I promised you, I won’t leave you. Keeping my promise.

She walked and cried, and I let her, because her anger will push her to fight, and she will eventually find out the truth. I wondered if she sensed it yet—the reason why she is different, why she matters so much more than she knows. Until then, I will protect her.

Minx was happy. Mate.
