Melvin's POV

The road stretched ahead, empty and gray beneath the afternoon sky, dust rose from the horses’ hooves, hanging in the still air.

I hadn’t spoken in miles, my jaw ached from clenching it too often, and my cheek still burned from the slap.

The memory of her face kept replaying in my mind. The tears that wouldn’t stop rolling down her cheeks, the way her voice had cracked when she said the words that cut my heart into pieces.

“I was your wife, not anymore.”

The words stayed in my head

AUREN'S POV “Are you alright?”Ronan looked at me with soft eyes. I blinked. The corridor stayed quiet around me. Melvin’s footsteps had faded completely, but my body hadn’t caught up yet.Ronan moved closer, his hand came up slowly. I could have stepped away, but I didn’t.His fingers brushed a strand of hair from my face before he took my hand, his palm was warm against mine, his fingers curling gently around my knuckles. He wasn’t gripping me. He held my hand as though he was giving me time to pull away if I wanted to, I didn’t.“You have nothing to feel guilty about, Auren.”I blinked at him.“What?”He tilted his head toward the corridor Melvin had disappeared through.“You stood your ground and faced your fear. That took a lot of courage.”I shook my head.“I’m not upset.”“Auren.”“I’m not, really. I feel lighter.”The words came too quickly.“I feel so free. I’ve never felt this light before.”He smiled, watching me with those steady eyes, I pulled my hand from his, my finge

SELENE'S POV “Stop right there.”I stepped closer, blocking his path.“I know you’re hiding something. Spill it, now.”Vayric studied me, his eyes moved over my face, taking in my trembling hands and the rapid rise and fall of my chest.“Selene.”“Don’t do that.” I held up my hand.“Don’t calm me down. Don’t you dare tell me I’m overreacting. He knows something. I saw it, the way he looked at us, and I know you know a lot more.”Vayric walked toward the table, he poured himself a glass of wine, his movements deliberate and calm. The complete opposite of everything I was feeling.“Melvin knows nothing.”I let out a broken laugh. “You sound so certain?”“If he knew anything, he would have acted differently.”He took a sip.“He would have confronted us directly. Instead, he made a threat. That is the behavior of a man who suspects but has no proof.”I pressed my palm against the table, the wood was cool beneath my fingers.“What if he has proof?”Vayric set down his glass. “Then we’ll d

SELENE'S POV“How dare you?”I burst through Cassien’s study door without knocking. He looked up from his desk, a quill still in his hand. His expression shifted from surprise to amusement.“You sent them after him. I know it was you. I dare you to deny it.”I crossed the room in three strides. My hands found the front of his jacket, and I pulled him toward me, the fabric bunching beneath my fingers.“I told you to stay away from Melvin, didn’t I?”Cassien didn’t resist, he let me pull him close, his face inches from mine. His eyes were infuriatingly calm.“Selene.”“Shut it!” I barked, my voice cracked.“Don’t you dare say my name. You sent rogues after him. You tried to have him killed on his way back.”He reached up and wrapped his fingers around my wrists, holding my hands against his chest.“I did what needed to be done, baby. I did it for us.”“You did what you wanted.”I tried to pull away, but he held on.“You’re obsessed with power, Cassien. You’re obsessed with taking everyt

He had been quiet throughout the journey, watching me with the careful patience of someone who knew better than to push. But the silence had stretched too long, he finally broke it.“Alpha, you’ve been silent since we left the gates.”I kept my eyes on the road ahead.“I have nothing to say.”He studied me, his gaze lingering on the red mark across my cheek.“You s

Auren's POV“What is going on here?”Ronan’s voice cut through the corridor like a blade.I turned, my cheek still burning from the second slap, my face wet with tears. He closed the distance between us, his eyes moving from me to Melvin, from my tear-streaked face to the red mark across Melvin’s jaw. His jaw tightened.Melvin’s hand was still near me, Ronan moved before either of us could speak. His hand caught my arm and drew me behind him, shielding me protectively, his fingers were warm against my skin, keeping me steady when my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.Silver surged beneath my skin, the sensation caught my breath, and I pressed my free hand against my chest.Ronan’s voice remained low.“Step away from her while you’re still breathing.”Melvin didn’t move, his eyes remained fixed on me, looking past Ronan’s shoulder as though he could still reach me if he simply kept looking.“She is my wife, Ronan.”The word hit me before I could brace myself.Wife?Did he even know what that

Melvin's POVThe noise from the hall faded behind me, replaced by the hollow echo of my footsteps against the stone. I walked through the first corridor with the guard trembling ahead of me. I told myself I needed air, but my steps carried me deeper into Emberfall’s private passages before I could even form a convincing lie.The guard stopped and bowed.“Alpha, the courtyard is this way.”I didn’t slow.“Good.”He hesitated.“The reception...”I stopped and looked over my shoulder.“Continue without me.”I walked past him. The corridors stretched ahead, lanterns flickering along the walls. I passed doorways and archways, searching casually at first, glancing into passing corridors, noting the direction of footsteps and watching healers move between rooms. Then, without even realizing when it happened, my search became deliberate.I stopped a young healer carrying a basket of herbs.“The healing wing? Where is it?”She pointed ahead.“That way, Alpha. Past the east courtyard, then left
