CHAPTER 19 POISONED

MIRA

Zara grins at me like she already won.

She rolls her shoulders loosening up like this is fun. Like hurting people is her favorite sport. The crowd is loud my head already buzzing but I lock my knees and breathe like Elric taught me.

Don’t rush. Read her body.

“Hope you scream pretty,” Zara says and spits to the side.

The horn sounds.

She moves fast, not clean, just fast. Her elbow clips my ribs before I can fully dodge and pain shoot sharp and hot. I stumble but don’t fall. She laughs.

“Too slow.”

She goes for my knee, the bad one. I feel it before it happens. I twist last second but she still catches me. My leg buckles and I hit the ground hard with dust in my mouth.

The crowd roars louder.

“Stay down,” she whispers, stepping on my chest. “You don’t belong here.”

My vision blurred but I grab her ankle and roll. She stumbles curses and I’m up again breathing hard. My ribs burn and my knee screams but I move.

She fights dirty. She goes for my old scar and I cry
