Elara’s POV
“What do you mean you’re cancelling your birthday party because of a guy?” Anita’s voice came sharp, her brows lifted high in that disbelieving way she always did when she thought I was making a mistake.
I exhaled, clutching my phone tighter, the screen still open to the last call I had with Jude. “It’s not just any guy, Anita,” I said, maybe a little too loud, my chest aching with the weight of it. “That’s my boyfriend for crying out loud. Jude had an accident.” My throat tightened as I spoke, but I forced the words out.
Anita frowned, shaking her head like she couldn’t understand me at all. “So you’re going to cancel your own birthday party? Elara, do you even hear yourself right now?”
“Yes, I hear myself,” I shot back, leaning forward, my voice breaking. “What kind of girlfriend would I be if my boyfriend had an accident and I still went on with the party? Laughing, dancing with other boys while he’s lying in a hospital bed? Do you know how heartless that sounds? As a matter of fact, I’m going home.”
Anita’s mouth fell open. “Home? Now? But you’re not supposed to leave until after this week. After our final project presentation!”
“Fuck the presentation,” I muttered, my thumb swiping over my phone. A notification pinged and I lifted the screen to show her. “Olivia already booked my ticket—she just sent it. I’m leaving tonight.”
Anita stared at me like I had lost my mind, her lips parting, her eyes searching mine as if she wanted to drag me back into reason. “Elara… you’re seriously doing this?”
I met her stare, my chest still burning with the memory of Jude’s tired voice. “Yes, Anita. Jude is more important than any presentation, any birthday party, any stupid cake. Besides, you can cover for me during the presentation. You owe me plenty, remember?”
She sighed and leaned back, running her fingers through her hair. That look in her eyes… it wasn’t just frustration. It was something else, something heavier, like she knew more than she could say. But she didn’t stop me, and that silence was all the permission I needed.
I packed quickly, hardly aware of my own hands folding clothes into a bag. The plane ride was only forty-five minutes, but it felt like forever. My thoughts spun in circles—Jude, bandaged and pale, Jude’s smile when he’d see me walk in, Jude needing me in a way that made my heart tighten. I wanted to surprise him, to make him feel loved, to remind him he wasn’t alone.
By the time I landed, the sky had darkened and the streets glistened with thin layers of rain. I stopped at a little shop and picked up the things I knew would make him smile—his favoritecandies, a warm scarf, a book he’d been talking about for weeks.
When I reached the pack house, the air shifted. It was something new, a scent I had never perceived there before—rich with pine that got my heart racing. I slipped inside like I belonged, because I did. The halls were familiar, my footsteps echoing softly as I moved toward Jude’s room. Nobody stopped me; they never did. His room had always been my second home, the one place I could walk into without knocking.
I knew he would chose to have his treatments at home, because he hated hospitals and so I didn’t have to bother asking which hospital, I just continued to his room.
The closer I got, the stronger the air became—sweet, intoxicating, almost dizzying. A scent I had never felt before clung to me, burrowing deep into my senses. It was sweet like fruit, sharp like citrus, and I could only think of pineapple for some strange reason. My chest tightened as I paused at his door. The music was already spilling into the hallway—loud, reckless, typical Jude even when he was supposed to be recovering.
I smiled faintly, shaking my head at him. Even sick, he couldn’t let go of his music. But when I pushed the door open, the smile died instantly, and everything I carried slipped from my hands to the floor.
The sight before me stole the air from my lungs. Jude—my Jude—lay sprawled on the bed, the blanket tangled around his waist. And there, pressed against him, her bare skin glowing in the dim light, was Lily. My rival since high school.
The word ripped out of me before I could stop it, trembling, raw, the truth of it sinking into my bones. “Mate?”
Jude jerked up, his eyes wide, panic flashing across his face. “Elara?” he said, clutching the blanket tighter. He hadn’t expected me. He hadn’t wanted me here.
I staggered forward, tears already stinging my eyes. “I was supposed to be at my party if not for you. If not for your call telling me you couldn’t come because of an accident. I left everything because I was fucking worried about you! And this—” my voice cracked as I pointed at them, “this is what you were doing?”
“Elara, watch your tongue!” he barked, his tone sharp, commanding.
I laughed bitterly, shaking my head as the tears slipped free. “Oh, I’m sorry… mate. I didn’t realize I was the side chick in this story.”
His face hardened, his jaw clenching. “You’re overreacting. You’ve been away for so long—what was I supposed to do?”
And then Lily, smug as ever, leaned forward, her voice dripping with venom. “Jude, isn’t it time you told her the truth? Didn’t your parents warn you to stay away from her weak wolf? You’re the Alpha’s son—you’re supposed to be with someone strong, someone worthy of the throne.”
The words cut through me like claws. My voice trembled as I turned to him. “Is that true, Jude? You knew all this time… and you said nothing?”
He slipped into his pants, his eyes colder than I had ever seen them. “Don’t play the victim, Elara. You always knew you were weak. But you still expected me to mate with you. Isn’t that selfish?”
The tears blurred my vision, but the truth was sharp enough to see clearly now. He wasn’t my shield, my anchor. He was just like the rest of them, the ones who had always whispered behind my back, branding me as less.
I stepped forward, every word shaking but firm. “If that’s the truth, then let’s end it here and now. Reject me.”
EpilogueAuthor’s POVEight Years LaterThe kingdom had never looked brighter.Sunlight poured across the great courtyard of the castle, reflecting off banners that hung proudly from every tower. The yard was filled again.Just like it had been years ago.But this time there was no tension, or doubts or whispers or hatred.Today, the kingdom celebrated.Thousands of wolves filled the courtyard. Packs from across the lands had gathered, just to see what was happening. The air buzzed with excitement. At the center of it all stood the royal family.King Aldric stood tall at the head of the raised platform, the crown resting firmly upon his head.A true Lycan King.Beside him stood Luna Elara. She stood as firm and as regal as ever .Her beauty had matured over the years, now from that young ambitious girl to a Queen.Years ago, she was hated, despised by her people, almost even killed. But eight years on, the wolves of the kingdom didn’t just respect her now. They adored her.But today,
Elara POVMorning came too quickly. The castle yard still carried traces of the celebration from the night before.A few servants moved about quietly, cleaning the last of the decorations. But the atmosphere was softer now and much more quieter.People were leaving. The guests were returning back to now their packs. And I stood near the entrance steps of the castle, saying goodbye to the people most dear to me in the worldz beside Aldric, of course. The first person walking toward me made my chest tighten instantly.“Anita.”She grinned the moment our eyes met.“There she is,” she said. “Her Highness.”I groaned softly.“Don’t start with me.”“Oh no,” she laughed, crossing her arms. “I’m absolutely starting. You’re a Luna now. That means I get to tease you forever.”I rolled my eyes, but the smile came anyway.“You survived death, war, and my terrible cooking,” she continued. “You earned the title.”“That cooking saved my life once.”“Barely.”We both laughed. Then the laughter faded
Elara POVThe door shut behind me with a soft click.A soft silence settled in instantly…Finally! The noise from the celebration still echoed faintly through the walls, the laughter and music and now distant cheering… but in here, it was muted.I reached up slowly and pulled the circlet from my head.It felt heavier now.I set it down on the dresser and stared at my reflection.Luna.The word still didn’t sit quietly.I exhaled and reached for the pins in my hair, pulling them out one by one. Strands fell over my shoulders. Then, the dress followed next. The most beautiful dress I had ever worn.I peeled it off carefully, folding it with careI changed into something lighter and simple. Then I crossed the room and let myself fall onto the bed.I laid flat on my back, staring up at the ceiling. The events replayed immediately. The cheers… the kiss… Seraphina.I forgive you.The words had left my mouth before I fully felt them.Did I mean them?Yes.That was the strange part.I did.
Elara POVThe music started slowly. The sound carried through the yard as the celebration fully began.I was still getting used to the word.Luna.It followed me everywhere tonight.“Luna Elara.”“Congratulations, Luna.”I smiled each time. Some faces were warm and of course somewere forced. But no one challenged it.I was their Luna now and they have to live with it.I slipped away from the main crowd carefully, the dress flowing behind me.I spotted her almost immediately.Anita was already watching me.Of course she was.She raised a goblet the second our eyes met.“Well look at you,” she called out dramatically. “Royalty.”I laughed softly and walked toward her.“You’re drunk already,” I said. She scoffed. “Please. I’ve been waiting for this day longer than you have.”I took the goblet she offered me.We clinked lightly.“To not dying,” she said.I raised a brow.“To not dying,” I echoed. We drank. The warmth of the wjnrspread down my throat and into my chest. For a moment, it wa
Elara POVThe day had finally come.I stared at my reflection.Luna.The word felt heavy and almost foreign in my tongue. My fingers trembled slightly in my lap as the maids moved around me, brushing powder over my skin, others adjusting my hair and some fastening tiny pins into place.I was going to be Luna.I was going to be mated to Aldric. After everything we've been through.. .Almost burning to death, the war with the vampires, then with the Shadow Crawlers, dying totally and then coming back to life… The nights I thought I had lost him.The nights he thought he had lost me.And now… this.My throat tightened.“Lift your chin,” one of them said softly.I obeyed.I felt the softness of the brush moved along my cheek. I watched myself in the mirror and barely recognized the girl staring back.A few weeks ago, I died! There was no sugarcoating that, I died… And now, I had a whole kingdom outside waiting to crown me.Life was cruel like that, unpredictable.I swallowed hard.Ju
The council hall was fuller than it had been in months. Not because of war or because of fear. But because of me.Word had spread quickly after Elton’s abdication. And by sunrise, the entire kingdom knew I had reclaimed the throne. All of them sat around the council room waiting for me and for my rule to begin.I stood behind the throne for a long moment before taking my seat.Elara stood to my right, slightly behind me, as tradition demanded. The murmurs started the moment I stepped forward.“He looks different.”“He carries himself like his father.”“Elton ruled with steadiness.”“Aldric ruled with fire.”I heard everything.I always did.I placed the crown upon my head. The hall quieted.“My people,” I began, my voice carrying easily through stone and silence alike. “We gather not in crisis today… but in transition.”“The war is over,” I continued. “Peace has returned to our lands. Our borders are secure. Our enemies either kneel… or lie buried beneath the soil they sought to claim
Chapter 51Elara POV The safe room was supposed to be silent and feel safe. But silence had never felt as dangerous as the one clouding over us now. Seraphina and I sat together on the cold floor, our backs pressed to the reinforced wall, both of us breathing loud and fast. My heart hammered aga
Aldric’s POVThe faint morning light spilt through her windows.I lay there on my back, staring at the ceiling, the same one, I’ve been staring at for the last thirty minutes, maybe even longer.Elara was asleep beside me.Her body was warm and grounding, as she tucked herself half under the sheets
Elara’s POVThe silence in the room felt so heavy and suffocating.Every passing second stretched like a wire pulled tight around my neck.I stood in Seraphina’s room, pacing around, but keeping my steps soft not to wake her.My palms were sweaty and my heartbeat wouldn’t settle.Aldric was out the
Chapter 52Aldric’s POV Ten years ago.I was small.. small enough that the window I stared through towered above me, its frame swallowing me whole. I remembered the way my fingers gripped the wooden ledge, my knuckles tight around it. Outside, the world had already gone dark as blood and bodies
