CHAPTER 5:MARKED AS HIS

I watched as my father walked away leaving me alone with the devil Adrian Smīth. He gripped my upper arm tightly and pulled me towards his chest so it looked as if he was comforting me from afar. My face was buried in his chest so my lifeless eyes couldn't be seen.

"You're going to wipe that fucking look off your face and act like a happy fiancé," he hissed in my ear. His hot breath fanning my cheek.

"What are you going to do if I don't?," I asked, rolling my shoulders back.

"You don't want to find out."

I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh. "Are you going to let go of me or..," I trailed off. I wasn't willing to find out what he'd do.

He's a mafia leader. He'd probably kill everyone I know. He glared at me one last time, warning me before he let go. He held his arm out for me to take. Slowly, I held his muscled arm. He most definitely lives at a gym.

I saw people giving us strange looks before I saw my father stood on the stage. "Good evening!," he said, not bothering to introduce himself since everyone knows everyone here. "I'm pleased to announce the engagement of my daughter, Daphne lili Thorne and Adrian Smith."

He began clapping. Claps were scattered around the room as people didn't know whether to feel pity or happy for me. They all soon made up their mind as the room was filled with claps.

The rest of the ball was spent with me stood by his side as people congratulated us and asked to see the ring. I wanted to tell them that if they want to see the damn thing so bad then they should just take it and keep it. I sure as hell don't want it.

Finally, it was time to leave. I snatched my arm away from Adrian and walked out of the building towards the limo I had arrived in.

Minutes later, Sara entered. "I'm so sorry," she rushed out, afraid our father would overhear. "I tried to stall him, Rose too."

"It's okay," I told her honestly. "Whatever is supposed to happen will happen whether or not it wants it too."

I tried so hard to make myself believe that.

"It's the third night this week that you've come home a drunken mess!," my dad yelled as I stumbled through the doors at 3am. I rolled my eyes and tried to walk up the stairs without falling.

I failed. I fell and just sat on the step, knowing that I won't be able make it all the way up.

It's been three days since the announcement of the engagement. That means there's four more days left until the wedding.

Four. More. Days.

My dad let out a sigh and sat next to me. If I'm honest, he seems more nervous and on edge about this whole engagement than me.

"Why?," I asked.

"Business," he replied as he stared straight ahead.

"I'm sorry for yelling."

"It's fine," I shrugged. "I'm getting married to a psychopath. He's probably gonna yell at me a lot so I should get used to it."

He stayed silent. There's not much he could say.

"So you've been planning this wedding for months?," I asked.

"We've discussed it more than once."

So yeah.

"I'm going to bed," I mumbled as I stood up, holding the handrail. My dad quickly stood up to steady me as I began to sway.

He led me upstairs and towards my room.

I laid next to Sara who now crawls into my bed ever since the mafia ball. I heard my dad close the door.

Suddenly, a sob broke out. Everything, all the emotions I had been keeping bottled up inside me broke out.

I am being given away purely because of business.

It's almost as if I mean nothing to my father. It's not fair. Why don't I have a say in this? My father isn't the one who's going to be living with Adrian . He doesn't get to make this choice for me. It's not even an arranged marriage because I'm not willing.

"Max," I panted catching the attention of my boss. I took a long sip from the bottled water he handed me. "I won't be here for a while."

"What do you mean, kid?"

"I'm getting married," I told him.

"Well, congratulates! Does he know about this?"

I shook my head. "No, that's why I won't be here for a while." It wasn't a complete lie. Sebastian doesn't know about it. I might not be able to sneak out of his house once we get married.

"That's fine but just don't leave it too long.

You got another fight in five." I quickly stretched before I was jogging back towards the ring. My opponent was already in there.

"Tonight's the night!," the announcer announced.

"Red vs Blade. The two strongest fighters!"

Blade. He's the only other strongest fighter apart from me. Obviously, I was trained so I have the upper hand here. A black mask covered his face just how my red one covers mine. His tatted chest was bare. Black shorts hung on his waist. His tattoos covered his upper arms, parts of his chest and his neck.

I hadn't realised that the fight had started until a fist had swung out towards me. I quickly ducked and did a roundhouse kick sending him to the ground. He jumped back up and began throwing punches at me. A stinging feeling on my arm lets me know that I'll be receiving a bruise there soon.

A loud gunshot made fall to the ground. I wasn't hit but I was always taught to fall to the ground.

It's easier to get hit when you're stood up rather than on the ground unless someone aiming for you. I crawled out of the ring and ran towards my dressing room where max would be waiting for me.

A rematch would have to happen some other time.

I quickly changed and left through the back. I couldn't risk anyone seeing my true identity. Due to the shooting, the underground ring will be shut down temporarily.

Sebastian’s PoVThe moment my boots crossed the edge of the forest, every instinct inside me sharpened. No turning back.Lucas moved beside me, his pistol fitted with a suppressor already drawn. We stayed low, using the hedges and stone statues surrounding the estate as cover. The mansion stood before us like a fortress.Three floors….Stone walls….Iron balconies.Security cameras sweeping across every corner.Somewhere inside…Daphne was waiting.I could feel it.Lucas crouched behind a hedge and peered through a small pair of binoculars.“Two guards at the service entrance,” he whispered.I followed his gaze. Both men were armed. One lazily smoking a cigarette while the other scrolled through his phone.“They’re distracted.”Lucas looked at me.“Your call.”I took a slow breath.“We do this quietly.”He nodded once.Without another word, we split up.I circled to the right while Lucas slipped left, disappearing into the shadows.Five steps.Four…..Three….Two….One.I lunged. My arm loc

Sebastian’s PoVI didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. The image of that curtain moving replayed over and over inside my head.Someone had been there.Watching….Waiting…..Praying.“Daphne…”The name left my lips like a promise.Lucas stepped out of the surveillance van just before sunrise, carrying two cups of coffee.“You’ve been staring at that house for six hours.”“I know.”“You should rest.”“I’ll rest after I get my wife back.”He sighed.“I figured you’d say that.”I accepted the coffee but never drank it.Every minute that passed felt stolen.Tomorrow…Whoever was inside that mansion had whispered the same word through that tiny movement of the curtain.Tomorrow.Something was happening tomorrow. And whatever it was…We were already running out of time.Lucas spread a map across the hood of the SUV.“I drove around the property before dawn.”I finally looked away from the mansion.“What did you find?”“Eight guards.”“Only eight?”“Visible guards.”I nodded.“There’ll be more.”

Daphne’s PoVThe diamond sparkled beneath the bedroom light. It was beautiful….Cold….Lifeless.Exactly like the man kneeling in front of me.“I’ll give you a moment,” Stephan said softly. His smile never faltered.“I know this is unexpected.”Unexpected? My entire body wanted to scream.Instead, I forced myself to breathe. The woman behind the wall had been right.Tomorrow…Everything happened tomorrow. If I refused…Would he force me?If I accepted…Would it buy me time? The answer came almost immediately.Time.I needed time….More than pride….More than anger….More than anything.I slowly looked from the ring to Stephan.“…If I say no?”His smile stayed exactly the same.Only his eyes changed. They became empty…..Dangerously empty.“I’d be disappointed.”The words were gentle….The meaning wasn’t.“And if I still refuse?”He stood.Slowly.Closing the velvet box.“You won’t.”“I asked what would happen.”He walked closer.Close enough for me to smell his expensive cologne. His fingers bru

Daphne’s PoVI read the note again…..And again….And again.Don’t trust Stephan. We’re watching. Wait for my signal. My fingers trembled so violently that the paper nearly slipped from my hand.Someone had left this.Someone had somehow entered my room without Stephan noticing.Or…Had they distracted him?The knock. The man downstairs.Had that been planned?I hurried to the broken breakfast tray and looked around for anything else.Nothing.No second note.No clue.Just shattered porcelain and syrup dripping slowly down the wall.I folded the note into the sleeve of my hospital sweater just as footsteps echoed outside.Someone was standing by my door.I held my breath. The handle rattled once. Then silence.Whoever it was… walked away.I didn’t move for another minute. My pulse was still racing.Someone was here.Someone knew I existed. And someone wanted Stephan to fail.Hours crawled by.The afternoon sunlight shifted across the bedroom floor. No one came….No food….No Stephan….Nothing.

  • THE MAFIA QUEEN   CHAPTER 58: A LIE TO SURVIVE

Daphne’s PoVI didn’t sleep. Not even for a second.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sebastian. Then I saw the crash. Then Stephan’s face. Then one word echoed over and over again.Pregnant.I sat curled up in the corner of the room, my knees pulled tightly against my chest. If he was lying…Then good.If he wasn’t…I instinctively rested a hand against my stomach.“I’ll get you out,” I whispered so quietly I barely heard myself. “I don’t know how… but I will.”A knock sounded outside.Three slow knocks. Then the door unlocked.Stephan stepped inside carrying a breakfast tray.Pancakes.Fruit.Orange juice. He smiled as though yesterday hadn’t happened.“As long as you’re carrying my family, you need to eat.”I nearly laughed.“My family?” I asked.“Our family.”“It’s Sebastian’s child.”His jaw clenched.“I said eat.”“I’m not hungry.”“You are.”“No.”His smile slowly disappeared.“You’ll hurt the baby.”“Then let me leave.”“No.”“Then stop pretending you care.”His eyes darkened

  • THE MAFIA QUEEN   CHAPTER 57:TRAPPED

Daphne’s PoVJust over a month laterIt's been just over a month since the crash and I'm still being kept hostage by Stephan . I'm still in the hospital but everyday he comes by and stays for an hour or two before leaving."She's not ready yet," I heard Stephan say loudly from outside my door. Clearly, he was on the phone to someone. He stayed silent for a while as the other person spoke. "I'll let you know when she's ready. And when I tell you that the plan needs to start. We'll be on the first flight out once the date has been set.He stayed silent before cutting the call. He's clearly talking about me but what plan is he talking about? Where even am I? Why do we need to get on a damn plane to get there?Without a word, he pushed the door open and entered. He came towards the bed and quickly leaned down to give me a peck. With my fast reflexes, I managed to dodge his lips just in time."What was that?," he asked, sounding offended."Stephan, we are family. I've told you that countl

I sat on my bed with a dress I had sewn in my hands. I always thought I'd wear this dress for something special. I made it long before I got married. The way Daphne handled that situation was impressive. I have to say I'm surprised.
