Chapter 7: The Promotion

The next few days Kira spent it working on herself. She exercised and tried to keep a good diet as well.

As she woke up in the morning, she dragged herself out of bed. She went to the bathroom and cleaned up her face.

As she stared at herself in the mirror, she smiled. Time had truly healed her.

Alex was now completely in her past and she looked forward to her new future.

The shrilling sound of her phone made her hurry out of the room to go pick it up.

"It had to be Tess," she said under her breath.

She rushed out of the bathroom and picked up the phone. It wasn't Tess. It was a strange number.

"Hello," she replied skeptically.

"Good morning, this is Adam Keith, from White Consult. Am I on to Miss Kira Donald?" he asked.

Kira's heart flipped in excitement. She had been dreaming of working for the Whites Consult which was one of the best business consulting firms in the city and now they were calling her!

She couldn't contain her excitement.

"Yes, this is Kira..." She chirped.

"Ah, good. I was starting to fear, I failed the wrong number. Anyway, your application has been approved. I am forwarding your employment letter right now... Is tomorrow a good day for you to start or—"

Kira didn't even let him finish before she jumped at the opportunity. "Yes, it is a good day. Thank you so much," she said.

"You are welcome. Do have a nice day," the man said and ended the call.

Kira went straight to her laptop and opened her mailbox.

"Yes!" She jumped for joy as she saw the employment letter.

She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed Tess's number.

"Tess, guess what?" She screeched on the phone.

"Do not tear open my eardrums baby girl, what is it?" Tess said. She was trying to sound stern but Kira picked up the smile in her voice.

"I got the job! White Consult just sent me my employment letter!" She screamed.

"Oh, my God! I am so happy for you!" Tess whispered. She was at work and even though she was hiding in the toilet to receive the call, she couldn't scream the extent of joy she felt.

"I know, I am happy for me too!" Kira replied.

"I am coming there after work, we need to get you clothes! Damn! I want you to look like the CEO!" Tess said and Kira grinned from ear to ear.

This was the best day of her life.

True to Tess's promise, she came to Kira's place later that afternoon and they both left the house to the nearest dress shop.

Tess helped her pick out the best corporate dresses they could find on their budget that would sell her as the perfect secretary.

When the next day came, Kira got dressed for work. Tess was whistling like a drunk man on a highway.

"If they don't give you a promotion in two months, call me a chicken!" She said and Kira burst into laughter.

She was wearing a blue corporate bodycon dress that stopped at her knees. It had a small slit on the side that showed a little skin, adding just enough sexiness to the outfit.

Her hair was pulled into a chignon at the back of her head and her smile was another addition to the beauty she represented.

"Tess, nobody gets a promotion because of the way they dress! It's about brain power!" Kira laughed as she ordered her cab through her phone.

"Oh, please, we both know you have plenty of those. You are a perfect baby girl and besides, I don't want to be a chicken! You are getting that promotion." Tess insisted.

Kira gave her a soft peck on the cheek before waltzing out of the door.

"Have a great day, Tess!" She called back as she pulled the door to their apartment closed.

The cab was already out waiting for her.

She got into it and relaxed in the back seat. She was getting nervous because she hasn't worked in a corporate setting in a long time.

"Good morning," she said to the driver.

"Good morning ma'am," the man replied before zooming off in the direction of the location she locked into the app.

Kira closed her eyes and tried to pull herself together. She prayed that her supervisor wasn't a difficult person and that her time with them was worth her while.

"We have arrived ma'am, the White Consult," the driver announced.

Kira opened her eyes and saw the towering building in front of her.

She thanked the cab man and paid her fares, before alighting from the vehicle.

Her small block heels echoed on the pristinely clean floors as she made her way to the elevator.

The employment letter had also included directions to her department and she had studied them throughout the night, she couldn't get missing.

She got to the floor and the first door had the name she was looking for.

Adam Keith.

She knocked gently and the door opened. "Good morning sir," she greeted before stepping in properly.

"Good morning, you must be... Miss Kira Donald?"

When she had spoken to him on the phone, she thought he would be some old man. But Adam wasn't more than twenty-nine years —he was young, maybe even younger than she guessed.

"Yes, I am Kira. Good morning sir," she replied.

"Please sit," he gestured toward the seat across from me. He started fumbling with the files on the table.

"Thank you," she replied, making herself comfortable.

"Can I call you Kira?" He said with a deep smile.

"Yes, please," she replied with a smile of her own.

Adam showed her everything she needed to know and pointed her to the office. She was to answer to him as he was her direct supervisor.

He showed her around to other members of the company and they were all very welcoming —or at least tried to be.

She soon proved her diligence and her words got to the head of the company. Who requested that such a good secretary should work in the main office?

When Kira received the letter a few months later, she was overjoyed.

It felt like lines were finally falling into place for her. All her prayers were getting answered and nothing bothered her.

"I told you I wasn't a chicken!" Tess said excitedly as Kira prepared to set out that morning.

"No, you are not. I have confirmed it now," Kira replied.

The horn outside reminded her that she had to hurry. Adam, her supervisor, had offered to give her a ride himself.

"Oh Adam, you didn't have to come to pick me up. I could have ordered a cab or something?" Kira said as she got to the car.

Adam held his heart playfully and pretended to be in pain. "That breaks my heart. It's no big deal. I stay close by and I thought why not spare you a few dollars?" He said flashing her his signature warm smile.

"I can't thank you enough, for everything," she said, finally accepting his offer.

"Not every supervisor would want their assistant to get the kind of promotion I got in such a short amount of time," she said.

Adam's eyes were focused on the road. He smiled at her comment and stole a glance at her.

"Who said I didn't benefit from your promotion?" He asked as he wiggled his brows. "You are an amazing worker. When the boss said he needed a secretary, I had to recommend you. It also earned me a new office in the executive wing of the building and a new car," he said with his eyes on the road.

Kira smiled wider than she had. This was turning out to be too perfect and a bitter feeling grew at the back of her mind but she quickly wiped it off.

She deserved this, nothing bad would happen, she whispered over and over in her head like a sort of mantra.

"Congratulations Adam, I am happy for you," she whispered with sincerity dripping from her voice.

"Well, just keep being great Kira and yes, you owe me to lunch later today," he said and Kira laughed.

"Sure thing." After all, he had done for her the least she could do was accept to go on lunch with him.

The car came to a stop at the executive parking lot and they both alighted it.

They walked to the elevator and Adam put in the number that was when Kira realized she hadn't done her research on the CEO's identity.

Her hands started sweating as she hitched to take out her phone and do a quick G****e search but Adam would see her. She didn't want him to think she wasn't prepared.

She was prepared. She just forgot to check the man's profile.

Everyone in the company just called him Mr. White but she was certain he had to have a real name.

"Okay, now Mr. White is a very strange man. He hates the media and he hates pictures. Part of your job is to make sure nobody takes a picture or requests a physical interview, no matter what, okay?" Adam whispered to me as we stepped out of the elevator.

The place was almost like a penthouse.

There were chairs arranged like in a lounge. With flowers lining the reception area.

Adam greeted the receptionist and proceeded to the main office. He gave a small knock and pushed the door open.

As Kira's eyes met those of the man sitting across the room, her heart collapsed.

This couldn't be happening —was she dreaming?
