View MoreJessica huddled on the floor, which had been her bed since she was thirteen, trembling from the cold. The heavy winds outside kept blowing the cardboard cut out from the oval window, letting all the frostiness inside and the only things poor Jessica had to cover with were some empty potato sacks which weren't doing a great job of keeping the winter breeze off.
Sleeping on the hard, cold concrete floor only worsened her health, especially with all the dust and chemicals around. She had developed a severe case of pneumonia. If she were a regular girl, she would have died months ago. The strong scent of charcoal and kerosene filled the air, irritating her lungs and making her cough repeatedly as she twisted beneath her makeshift sheets. Having just recovered from yet another coughing episode, her body calmed down but was soon jolted awake when someone kicked her in the stomach. Her amber eyes snapped open to reveal Luna Magda looming over her with a curling iron in one hand and a cane in the other. Jessica coughed to let air back in her lungs, but another kick forced the oxygen back out. The Luna didn't give her a chance to recover as she laid another hard kick to Jessica's gut. "You lazy bag of fleas!" Luna Magda snarled as she struck Jessica with the cane. The omega raised her hands defensively to shield her face from the weapon. The Luna's eyes glared at Jessica with hatred and disgust. "I thought I told you I needed your help to get ready for the Luna's Ball. It's way past 8, and you're still sleeping," she filled her mouth with saliva and spat in Jessica's face. "Useless wolf." Magda's eyes were as cold as ice and her face began to collect wrinkles showing her old age of sixty. She hated being old and she hated any she-wolf that was younger than her. "I—I'm sorry Luna. I overslept," Jessica apologized, struggling to get up but only to be struck by the Luna once more with the stick, sending her body back on the floor. Jessica cursed herself in her head. She should have known better. The summer was over and with autumn came the long nights and short days. During summer, the sun would rise high in the sky by 5 am, and it would be easy for her to wake early. The sunlight would loom in and warm her face and melt the sleep from her body, but now the sun only began to show itself a few minutes after 8, so without a phone or an alarm clock, Jessica relied on her body to wake her up when it was hungry or needed to relieve itself. She should have followed her instincts and not slept at all last night, knowing the risk of sleeping in. "I don't want your apologies. I want your obedience and gratitude," the Luna hissed. "I took you in when that worthless father of yours got himself killed, along with your whore of a mother. And I've been good to you. Haven't I been good to you, Jessica?" The Luna asked, hissing and flashing her dark eyes, showing her dominance. Jessica clenched her fists, scraping up dirt in her fingernails as her hands folded over the floor. She hated the Luna for always speaking ill of her parents. It wasn't their fault hunters killed them. They were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. "Answer me, you filthy mutt!" Luna Magda raised her hand with the stick and smacked it over Jessica's face. It hurt so much, the pain made the omega squeal. A satisfied smile appeared on the Luna's mouth when she saw the welt and blood on the young girl's face. "It doesn't matter whether you answer me or not. The Moon Goddess knows how good I've been to you, so that's why she blessed my three wonderful children with their wolves from an early age. You on the other hand, are sixteen and wolfless because the great Moon Goddess is punishing you for your ungratefulness and your constant disobedience," Luna Magda cackled. "Here," she shoved the curling iron in Jessica's hands. "Take the back entrance and meet me in my chambers in five minutes, and don't be late or else I'll whip you until my hands are tired." "Luna –" Jessica protested, but the Luna cut her off with a slap to the face. "I will not tolerate your mouth today. See you in five," the Luna said as she ran off in wolf speed. The walk from the barn to the back entrance alone would take Jessica five minutes. But surely if she ran and never stops, then to make it to the Luna's chambers would be at least ten minutes. "I'll never make it in time," she mumbled. Not wanting to waste precious time, the little omega girl slipped her feet into her old, tattered leather shoes and ran like the wind."Careful! Careful!" Nigel Senior was hovering over Opal as she made the final touches to her potion."Would you back off, old man?" Opal scoffed. "You're getting on my nerves."Nigel Senior grabbed his mate gently by the waist, his voice softening. "I'm just happy you're alive and well. I don't know what I'd do without you."Cameron cleared his throat. "Excuse me," he said, stepping forward. The old couple quickly pulled apart, slightly sheepish."What is it, Cameron?" Opal asked, her tone neutral but eyes curious."I'm just wondering if the potion is done yet. We wanted to beat the darkness and get back to the Whistling Cave before sundown.""I see. I just need to do one more thing," she replied. As if on cue, DJ walked in at that very moment just in time to see Opal spit directly into the mixture. There was a soft poof, and the potion transformed from green to a glowing blue, emitting a faint shimmer."My father has to drink that?" DJ asked, his eyebrows lifting in disbelief."If he
"My prince," Theodore dropped to his knees, his voice trembling with awe. "It's an honor to meet you. I can't believe I met your father, and now... I'm meeting you."Lazarus blinked, clearly surprised. "You met my father?""Yes," Theo nodded quickly. "We stopped at the Vanderwolf mansion for the Alpha's help in finding Mystic Mountain, and he showed up. He was looking for you. He said you took something that belonged to your stepmother."Lazarus growled low in his throat, a sharp sound that sent shivers down everyone's spine. "So he knows I took the Book of the Gods... Damn him. Did he say anything else?""Not really," Theodore answered. "Only that you left with werewolves and a human.""So that means the Alpha knows we're traveling with a bloodsucker," said a broad-shouldered young man from the far corner of the room. His voice was gruff, but there was a spark of mischief in his eyes. "I'm Valko, the son of the Beta from the Howling Cliffs pack. This here is my sister, Velma, and our
After hours of hiking through the magical forest, the group finally reached the top of Mystic Mountain, and they were worn out. Their bodies ached, their stomachs growled, and even the adrenaline that had fueled their journey so far was starting to wear thin. The once-glowing candy skies had darkened into deep violet. The enchanted beauty around them, while still mesmerizing, was now cloaked in shadow.Every step felt heavier."Remind me again why we didn't pack snacks," Falcon groaned, dragging his feet. "I'm starving.""Didn't you eat enough chocolate dirt and candy clouds?" Theo snapped."I don't think all that forest junk food counts," Falcon muttered."Look," Cameron said suddenly, lifting his arm and pointing ahead. "There's a cabin up ahead.""That must be Opal's place," DJ said, relief evident in his voice. “It’s older than I expected.” "Who cares?" Falcon sighed dramatically. "I just wanna kick these boots off. I really need a foot rub."The group moved forward, but their pa
"So... how did she taste?" Cameron asked, breaking the silence with a sly grin.DJ shot him a look. "Please. Don't start.""Come on," Cam smirked, nudging his shoulder. "We're all friends here."DJ groaned. "Honestly? Salty," he muttered, shaking his head.Falcon burst out laughing. "She tasted exactly how she acts. Salty.”Even Theodore cracked a grin, his normally serious expression softening. Their laughter echoed off the glistening cave walls as they trekked forward, still damp from their dive through the mermaid's secret entrance.Mishell's kiss had unlocked a secret door under the cave that pulled them into the depths when they plunged in. They swam for barely a minute before they emerged inside what felt like the belly of the world. The cave was warm, thick with a soft golden mist that clung to their skin like silk.Everything was eerily silent. No echoes. No dripping water. Just... warmth."Something smells sweet," Theo said suddenly, his vampire senses flaring.DJ sniffed the
They woke just before sunrise, the horizon still wearing a blanket of fog. With the wind nipping at their faces and clouds looming above like a warning, Cameron, DJ, Falcon, and Theodore took off at full speed, tearing across the rugged terrain toward their next destination... The Whistling Cave. The world around them was eerie and quiet, except for the occasional distant crackle of thunder. The air tasted like sea salt and static. There was definitely a storm coming. After racing for nearly an hour, they skidded to a halt just shy of a steep cliff. The sound hit them first, an echo so deafening, it vibrated their skulls. They clutched at their ears as the unnatural screeching reverberated from below."The cave is whistling alright," Cameron said, gulping hard as his eyes watered from the noise.Theo crept to the cliff's edge, his vampiric senses zeroing in on a strange vibration. He motioned for the others. Below, nestled into the jagged cliffs like the gaping mouth of a sea monster,
The vampire king had barely vanished into the mist when Cameron and the others prepared to set out. The rising tension left a crackling charge in the air, like lightning just waiting for a place to strike."We have to go now, Alpha. Thanks for everything, and I hope you find your son soon," Cameron said sincerely."Thank you," Nolan replied with a brief nod, his gray eyes still trailing after the space where Dracula had stood."We'll keep an eye out," DJ added. "Maybe we'll run into them on the way."They exchanged brief farewells, and without another word, the four left the Vanderwolf estate behind. The world beyond the pack mansion grew dense and alive, the trees towering like ancient sentinels. Their path twisted deeper into Wolffang Woods, guided only by the map Nolan had given them earlier. The forest thickened quickly, the sunlight dimming behind thick canopies of pine and maple.Falcon groaned as he stumbled over a root. "I can't believe I had to leave my suitcase of goodies be
