I was in the living room, surrounded by laughter and Christmas music, when the front door suddenly flew open.

“Merry Christmas, everybody!”

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

Aunt Simone stood there in a glamorous leopard-print outfit, loaded down with enough gift bags to furnish an entire store.

“And yes,” she announced proudly, “I brought presents.”

She dropped the bags beside the Christmas tree, and Ruby immediately started digging through them.

Simone, however, had already spotted her rea

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   THE REAL REASON

Henry kept his eyes on the road, one hand resting on the steering wheel. For a moment, I thought he was going to make another joke. The man could turn practically anything into an opportunity to tease me.But this time, he remained quiet. Then he glanced at me, a small smile tugging at his lips.“You know, I never told you something about the first time I saw you.”I turned toward him.“The first time you saw me?”“Yeah. It was at Arthur’s bar, a while before you and I actually met.”I blinked in surprise.“Wait. You saw me before the night I came in with Mandy?”He nodded.“Long before you walked up to me and offered me that contract.”I stared at him, trying to imagine it.“You never told me that.”“You never asked.”I gave him a look.“Henry.”“Okay, okay.” He laughed softly. “I’ll tell you.”He took a breath, his expression growing more thoughtful.“I was at the bar that night, and I noticed you. You were beautiful, Clara. I mean, the kind of beautiful that makes a man forget what

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   AN IMPORTANT QUESTION

“Enough!” Dad barked. Everyone froze. Dad looked absolutely livid. His jaw was set, and his eyes bored into us with terrifying intensity. He looked like a man who had finally reached his limit. “Why does Santa walk funny?” For half a second, our brains collectively short-circuited. “Because he's got a huge sack.” The table erupted. It wasn't just laughter; it was pure, unadulterated relief. Ruby snorted and started choking on her Pinot Noir. Aunt Simone shrieked and fell sideways against Mom, who was laughing so hard she could barely breathe, clutching the table to keep from sliding out of her chair. Dad took a massive, theatrical bow, looking smug enough to win an Oscar. His tacky blinking-reindeer sweater rode up as he straightened. “Thank you! I'm here all week!” I balled up my napkin and hurled it straight at his face. “Sit down, you moron! You almost gave me a heart attack, you old man!” Dad sat back down, looking radiant. That's when I noticed Mom wiping tears from he

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   THE SERIOUS ANNOUNCEMENT

By the time Aunt Simone walked back into the dining room carrying the reheated turkey, I was more than ready for Christmas dinner to get back on track.“All right, everyone!” she announced, setting it down. “Christmas dinner is officially back on!”The table erupted into cheers, and I couldn't help laughing as she placed the turkey right in the center. After everything that had unfolded this evening, a peaceful dinner felt like a genuine Christmas miracle.“Finally,” Dad muttered, his eyes locked on the food.I glanced at him and bit back a smile. Dad was not a patient man on an empty stomach, and judging by the way he was staring at that turkey, he’d already passed his limit.Sitting beside me, Henry caught Dad’s expression. “Don't worry, Mr. Jones. There's plenty to go around.”Dad shot him a look. “I can see that.”“Good. I'd hate for you to miss out on my cooking.”I lightly nudged Henry with my elbow. “Can you please behave yourself for five minutes?”He turned to me, looking gen

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   A FATHER BLESSING

I watched Henry approach my father with the kind of confidence that made me wonder if the man had ever been nervous a day in his life.Dad sat in his favorite armchair, looking increasingly irritated. After everything that had happened, his Christmas dinner had been interrupted, and a hungry Theodore Jones was not exactly known for his patience.Henry stopped in front of him and straightened his shirt.“Mr. Jones, I'd like to ask for your blessing to date Clara.”Dad slowly looked up at him.“You want my blessing?”“Yes, sir. To date her officially this time.”Dad eyed him suspiciously.“And what makes you think you're good enough for my daughter?”Henry squared his shoulders.“Well, I'm charming, handsome, successful—”“You forgot modest.”“I was saving the best for last.”Dad stared at him without the slightest hint of amusement.“You think this is funny?”Henry's grin faded slightly. Even he seemed to recognize when it was time to stop showing off.“Not entirely, sir. I'm serious a

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   A REAL BEGINNING

I looked at Ruby, still trying to process everything we had said to each other. For years, I’d imagined what it would feel like to finally tell her the truth. I’d pictured myself walking away victorious, finally making her understand how much she’d hurt me. But now that it had happened, I didn’t feel victorious. I just felt tired. “So,” Ruby said, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. “What happens now?” I took a breath. “I don’t know. I can’t promise we’ll suddenly become best friends. There’s too much between us, and I’m not going to pretend it never happened.” Ruby nodded slowly. “I wouldn’t expect that.” “But I don’t want to keep fighting with you, either.” “Neither do I.” The silence that followed felt different from the ones we’d shared before. It wasn’t full of accusations or all the things we were too afraid to say. For once, neither of us seemed determined to win. “I want us to try,” I said. “Not go back to how things were. Maybe that’s not even possible. B

  • THE SHIRTLESS CHEF IS MY FAKE BOYFRIEND   A DECISION

I turned to Ruby, looking at my sister in the silence of my bedroom.“You know what’s strange?”She looked at me, waiting.“You talk about being fragile like it was some terrible thing.”Ruby said nothing.“But you used it.”Her eyes widened, and I knew she understood exactly what I meant.“You knew what would happen whenever you played the weak one. Mom and Dad would drop everything for you.”Ruby lowered her gaze.“You wanted something? You got it. You didn't want to do something? They did it for you.”She opened her mouth, but I wasn't ready to let her interrupt me. Not this time. For once, I needed to get everything out without worrying about how she would react or whether my words might hurt her feelings.“And you think I didn't notice?”Ruby looked up at me.“I noticed everything.”My voice trembled slightly, and I hated how difficult it was to say these things out loud. They had lived inside me for so long that I had almost convinced myself they didn't matter anymore. But they
