Bella's POV

Nobody moved for a moment after I said it.

The room held its breath. The corridor held its breath. Even Joss, who had just spent the last several minutes doing things with her hands that I had no clear memory of but that I understood had been the difference between me being here and not being here, went completely still with her hands still resting on the treatment table.

Zane was the first to speak.

"Tell me," he said.

Not what did you see or are you sure or are you alright first.

  • THE TRUE LUNA IS A FATSO!    Chapter 37 — Hidden In Plain Sight

Zane's POVThe first thing I did was seal the tunnels.Every entrance. Every exit. Every junction point. Warriors posted at each one with instructions that nothing came up from below and nobody went down without my direct authorization. It took four minutes to position everyone and those four minutes felt like the longest four minutes of my life because every second of them I was thinking about what was directly beneath the floor we were standing on.Selene. In our tunnels. Building something in the sealed section that we hadn't reached yet.The second thing I did was call the packhouse into immediate lockdown. Not the partial lockdown of the morning. Full lockdown. Every gate sealed. Every packmate accounted for. Everyone in the main hall within the next ten minutes where I could see them and count them and know exactly who was present.Bella stood beside me at the treatment room door while the packhouse mobilized around us, still holding the heart stone, the mark on her wrist silver

Just tell me. The specific directness of someone who understood that what I was carrying was more urgent than the questions that could wait.I looked down at the heart stone in my hands. Still warm. Still glowing its soft steady light. My grandmother's presence inside it felt like a hand on my shoulder, not pushing, just present. Confirming."When my heart stopped," I said slowly, "I didn't go dark. I went somewhere.""Where?" Wren asked from the doorway."I don't have a name for it," I said. "I

  • THE TRUE LUNA IS A FATSO!    Chapter 35 — Brought Back

Zane's POVFor three seconds I didn't move. Not because I didn't understand what Joss had said. I understood it completely. I understood it in the specific full-body way that information arrived when it was too large for the mind to process first and went straight to somewhere more fundamental instead.Bella's heart had stopped.Three seconds of standing completely still while that fact rearranged everything around it.Then I moved."What do you need?" I said. My voice came out level. I don't know how.Joss was already working, both hands on Bella's chest, her healer's training converting whatever she was feeling into action faster than thought."The bond," she said without looking up. "I need you in direct contact. Both hands. Now."I was beside Bella in one step. I took her face in both hands, the most direct contact I could manage without disrupting Joss's access to her chest, and I felt it immediately.Nothing.The mate bond between us had always been a presence. Even in the early

  • THE TRUE LUNA IS A FATSO!    Chapter 34 — The Cure

Zane's POV I have never run like that in my life. Not in training. Not in any territorial emergency in the eight years I'd been Alpha of Silverpeak. Not in any situation that had previously presented itself as the kind that required everything a person had and then asked for more on top of it. The signal from Joss had reached me when we were twenty two minutes from the packhouse. Four words. *Mark reversing. Come faster.* I looked at Bram. He looked at me. Neither of us said anything because there was nothing to say that running wouldn't say better. We ran. The forest blurred. The border stones passed beneath my feet without registering. The southern packhouse approach, familiar enough that I could have covered it blind, felt like foreign ground because familiar ground didn't move fast enough and I needed everything to move faster. Seventeen minutes from Joss's signal to the packhouse gate. The gate guard had it open before I reached it. Someone had been watching from the wa

  • THE TRUE LUNA IS A FATSO!    Chapter 33 — Running Out of Time

Bella's POVI knew something was wrong before Joss said anything. The mark had been recovering. Slowly, unevenly, but moving in the right direction, the black retreating from the outer edges inward the way Joss had described, silver returning in thin lines that widened gradually with each passing hour. And then it stopped. Not gradually. Not a slowing of the recovery rate that I might have attributed to the limits of what the bond stabilization could achieve or the natural ceiling of passive regeneration. It stopped the way a clock stopped when something broke inside it. One moment moving. Next moment entirely still.I noticed it before Joss did because I was the one wearing it.I pressed my thumb against the mark and felt nothing. Not the warmth. Not the pulse. Not even the low background hum of something alive and present that I'd become so accustomed to over the past weeks that its absence was immediately and completely wrong in the way that silence was wrong in a room where music

  • THE TRUE LUNA IS A FATSO!    Chapter 32 — Bargain in Blood

Zane's POVI want to be clear about one thing.Crossing into Blackthorn territory without authorization was not my first choice. It was not my second choice. It was the choice that remained after every other option had been examined and found wanting, and I made it with full awareness of what it risked and the specific grim acceptance of a man who understood that the right decision and the comfortable decision were frequently not the same thing.I took four warriors. Bram, because he was the best I had. Reed and Harker, because they moved like shadows and thought like tacticians. And Senna, because she'd proven herself twice in the last twenty four hours and I trusted her judgment in unpredictable situations more than I trusted warriors with three times her experience who had never been tested the way she'd been tested this week.We left before dawn. The border between Silverpeak and Blackthorn territory was marked by a ridge of old stones, placed generations ago when the territorial
