Chapter five
Diana's povI was startled as the chief maid waltzed into the room with so much vigor and walked up to me, she swung her hand across my face in a hard motion, turning my head to the side. The pain stung, but not as much as my heart at that moment, I twisted my head to gaze at her while she stood over me.“How dare you? Have you any idea what you've done, disrespecting the entire royal family by bringing shame and embarrassment when you ran out of their presence?” She yelled at the top of her voice, her face becoming slightly red and the bulge on her forehead began to appear. She gave a short laugh filled with mockery. "You are quite the lucky one, his majesty only decided to lock you up for your indiscretion last night, if your punishment were up to me, you'll be lashed hard enough until you pass out, because you also disgraced me as well, and here you are having a wonderful time just having a nice nap,” she huffed and puffed while I tried to drown the noise out.She didn't know how much pain I was in last night, nothing about my sleep was nice, it was painful, rough and confusing in between.“You are going to be locked up. Guards! Get in here and take her to the prison,” she yelled out and immediately two huge guards entered the room and picked me up on both sides before dragging me out.I didn't have the energy to make a fuss or to even walk, so I just let myself be whisked away. My feet dragged on the floor as we approached the prison to the side of the palace at the bottom.Headmistress Beatrice followed suit into the prison and she watched as the unlocked one of the doors threw me onto the rough ground, luckily I was wearing a long gown and so I didn't bruise anywhere. They jammed the doors and bolted it with a key and the guards walked away out of the prison while the headmistress still remained. “You are unlucky to be mates with the prince, he would never accept a peasant like you, not in his life, not in the next, you are everything he despised." She gave a curt laugh before she headed for the door and then stopped abruptly without turning to face me. “For all we know, you might just be left to rot here," she called out before jamming the cellar doors behind her.I sat in silence on the hard cold ground while I thought about how I ended up in this situation, for the past three years, I have worked in the palace, undetected and unrecognized by the lycans, just another mutt running around to do their biddings, even most of the servants have no knowledge of me, but now I've been brought to the spotlight.I left my pack to work as a maid in the palace because I didn't want to stay home. My mother never really liked me, she blamed me for my father's death and others that were in the pack did the same, I needed a place to work and also shelter and the palace provided both.I cursed the moon goddess in my heart, why couldn't she just let me live my quiet life, tossing me into the mouth of lycans themselves. I knew from now, if I survived this prison, my days won't be as quiet as they were before.I tried to remember what happened on the night of the prince's birthday party; how his eyes filled with disgust watched me, making me feel things that I had never felt before. I was frustrated with myself. The worst part of it all was that I reacted, the mate bond made me react to the way he spoke and his gaze even after he rejected me.There's no way I could compare myself with a Lycan let alone the prince himself. Maybe he was right, the moon goddess must have been insane to pair us up.It has been a few hours before the sound of the doors echoed through the dark cell, I didn't think they would let me out just yet and so wondered who it might be, something in me longed for it to be the prince and for him to take me back, but that was only wishful and stupid thinking. When I gazed up, Marilyn was in front of me with a tray of food in her hand. At the sight of the meal, my stomach grumbled and I realized I hadn't had anything to eat since last night before the party started. She dropped down and one knee, “Here, I brought something for you to eat,” she whispered looking back and forth from me to the door. “I'm not supposed to be here, I lied to the guards that the food was from the mistress before they would let me in,” she announced.“You might get in trouble for this, you need to leave now,” I tried to persuade her but she wouldn't listen.“I heard about what happened,” she said before sliding the tray towards me. “I'm sorry." She casted a sad look at me but didn't say anything else.I sighed, “Thank you for the food Mer, and it's alright, I'll be fine." I didn't know if I was reassuring her or myself. “But you need to leave now before they catch you, I don't want you to be punished for helping me.”Marilyn was a good friend and I didn't want anything to happen to her because of me. "If they don't let you out soon, believe me when I say I'll be coming over more often,” she promised before she rose to her feet and left. After a while, I heard the sound of the door again, I thought it was Marilyn and almost yelled at her to leave, I was so wrong…Chapter sixDiana's povShe closed the door behind her and stood, her back pressed against the wall, “Surprised to see me?” Emily's voice bounced against the walls as she sauntered down the stairs towards my cell. She wasn't wrong though, I was quite surprised to see her and wondered what exactly she was doing here. She is the prime minister's daughter which I've had the pleasure of not meeting a couple of times. The few times that we did cross paths, she knew how to make my life more miserable. Not to mention her father was basically the king's right-hand when it comes to decisions of the state. I never wanted to cross her path, but sometimes, it was inevitable. She smirked as she could and then came to a halt in front of my cell. I sat on the ground and strained my neck to look upwards at her. “Yes, well, I'm surprised as well. I wouldn't dare visit such a place like this meant for commoners and low-class miscreants,” she said, her expression twisted in disgust as she glanced aroun
Chapter sevenDiana's povApparently, the guards were the ones to walk in. I was still mulling over what had just happened while they ran to Emily's aid, “Miss, are you alright, what happened here?” They questioned. When she got on her feet, she wrenched her hands from the guards who had helped her up, “Get your hands off me, what do you think happened here?” She barked back in so much anger before she turned sharply towards me, “That bitch did something to me!"“We heard a loud scream and then noises, and we thought to check it out, when we got here you were on the floor,” one of the guards answered.Emily continued to stare at me in confusion and anger. We didn't know what had happened either. One minute she was in front of me, the next she was on the floor. Did I do that? It couldn't be, but then how did she end up on the floor? There was no way that I could have done that, but I guess Emily had other beliefs. She walked up the bars of my cell with shaky legs, which were the only t
Chapter EightAlaric's povAfter a wild night, I still couldn't sleep. It's been the same ever since I found out who my mate was. I replayed the scene of my return-banquet over and over and over in my mind. There was a stir coming beside me and then a low yawn, “Good morning,” a soft feminine voice greeted in a lazy tone. “How did you sleep?” Emily asked as she placed a hand on my bare chest which made me glance at her from the corner of my eye. There was a smile on her face like she had had the best night of her life, well I couldn't relate cause my nights have been shitty ever since the banquet and things got even more complicated.“You need to leave, now." I took her hand from my chest and placed it on the bed then rolled over and sat down and tried taking deep breaths just to get myself started for the day.Although I had the opportunity to relax, as the crowned prince and the only prince, I still had things to do.I've never really fancied Emily, we never really talked that much
Chapter NineDiana's povI woke up the next day with Merilyn still beside me. I tapped her gently in an attempt to wake her up as I knew it was time for us to get up and get to work before headmaid Beatrice comes around, she wouldn't take it likely with us if she caught us still in bedShe hummed before she finally sat up, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hands and then she stretched, “Is the witch here yet?” She asked absentmindedly. I chuckled softly knowing she was referring to Miss Beatrice.“Watch it Mer, you don't know who's listening,” I cautioned. Finally awake, she cast a sad look at me for a few seconds, “Are you sure you'd be okay to work today?” She asked out of concern as she stretched her hand out and placed it upon mine on the bed.I didn't say a word and just nodded and offered her a tight-lipped smile but she didn't seem convinced.I wasn't okay at the moment if I could not work today, that would have been really better for me but I knew that wasn't possible, Mis
Chapter TenDiana's povIn the wardrobe, I steadied my breathing; in and out; in and out, repeatedly until I was sure he couldn't hear me even with his super hearing. As a Lycan, he was meant to be able to hear me, maybe even sniff me out, but I thanked the moon goddess none of that had happened yet.Through the small peaky hole, I focused on what King Williams was up to, what was he doing here? Of all the days to come up here, he chose the day I did. He stepped fully into the room, kicked to the side the tossed clothes, and the papers that laid around before he was in the middle of the room.I could tell from his expression, he was angry and very concerned, perks of being a king I guess, having to bear the burdens of everyone in your kingdom, with more money and power in the world comes great responsibility; responsibilities that he was neglecting, or focusing more on his own kind rather than the entire populace. He seemed to just stand over the pillar that contained the orb which he
Chapter ElevenAlaric's povThere wasn't any other strange eye contact between the servant and Emily but that didn't stop me from thinking about it. I was very skeptical and cautious about the happenings in the palace ever since I got back, I got this strange feeling that something was going to happen or something was wrong, either one, it was just my own opinion.Emily excused herself, mentioning something about completing said duties we had talked about earlier, and also wanted to meet her father who was in the throne room and was said to have a meeting. The servant boy informed me about this as he led me towards my mother's garden where she normally had her morning tea.“Good morning Mother,” I greeted her before sighing and sitting beside her, she was having her morning tea in the gardens, and her entourage stood outside the arbor, it was morning so the sun didn't really bother them, not like my mother cared anyway. She might have been having tea, but it looked like she had prepar
Chapter twelve.Diana's povIt's been almost ten minutes and I've been staring at the pearl ever since, contemplating whether or not to touch it and find out what it had done to the king or maybe I should just go.I paced back and forth before I finally made a decision. I was hovering over it, going around in circles, “Okay, let's do this.” I felt like it was calling to me to touch it, was that the same feeling the king had? I better be fast before another unexpected person decides to show up.My hands shook a bit as I stretched them outwards towards the orb, the moment my fingers grazed the surface of the orb, I inhaled sharply, my head thrown backward. When I removed my hands from the orb, I wasn't standing where I should have been, the room appeared empty, save for the single mirror just opposite me.My reflection stared back at me, my silver hair which I always tried to cover up framed my face, my blue eyes, and my overall appearance. What was this place? Was I inside the orb? I
Chapter thirteen.Diana's povAfter finally escaping the prince, there was the impending fear at the back of my mind that I was going to be dragged back to the cells again. When I finally arrived at the servant's quarters, there wasn't anyone there which meant that they were all still working, maybe I could go ahead and complete mine before Miss Beatrice found out about it.I grabbed my necessary tools from the kitchen and then proceeded to the east wing. I knew the prince was somewhere in the west wing so I was safe from bumping into him while I worked. My mind drifted back to the room in the west wing, these questions plagued me and I wanted answers but I didn't know where to get them from, who would know about that anyway, I wondered.I tried to piece together the scattered images in my mind and tried to make sense of it, whether or not it was important or it was real. I mean the king seems to have probably believed what he had seen, so maybe mine were real. Were they like Astro pr
