The doctors reassured us that it was a minor scratch, and grandma had been very lucky.
Only then did my fast-beating heart slow down, and I began noticing those around me.
The entire Wilson family was gathered in the ward, including Matt’s two cousins, Josh and Benny.
“Mother, you cannot keep going out on your own, do you know how worried we were?” Matt’s mother, Maria scolded lightly.
But grandma only smiled. “I’m alright. It’s just a scratch.”
I bit down hard on my lip, trying to stop myself from shedding the tears of relief.
Just then, grandma looked at me, then she smiled.
“Oh my dear child,” she reached out her hand toward me, “Come here. You must have been so scared, I apologize.”
I went to her, taking my hand in hers.
Relief washed through me like a tide. For a moment there, I had imagined not being able to hold her hand again.
“I’m glad you are alright, Grandma,” I managed to say.
Grandma smiled dotingly. “I’m really fine. You seem to have lost a lot of weight. Matt, have you been taking care of your wife at all?”
Just then, Grandma’s eyes flickered toward Matt, and then her eyes darkened.
“Why is she here?” She suddenly asked no one in particular.
I followed her eyes, and they fell on Olivia, who was still standing unbearably close to Matt.
Olivia flushed, then she shyly stepped forward.
“Hello Grandma, my name is Olivia. I hope you get well soon.” She greeted respectfully.
But Grandma’s face only darkened. “I know who you are, why is she here?” She looked from Olivia to Matt, as though expecting some explanation.
Olivia’s face turned pale instantly. For a second, she looked absolutely mortified.
“Grandma, Olivia means no harm. She heard about your illness and came to see you,” Matt added, clearly hoping to make grandma see her in a good light.
Grandma forced herself to sit up, and I managed to help her up.
Her expression was already full of rage.
“Are you crazy? You are married, Matt. Do you realize that seeing that woman with you could really give people the wrong idea about your marriage?”
“Grandma…”
“That’s enough, I do not want to see her here. Make her leave,” Grandma stubbornly added.
This was the first time I had seen grandma react this strongly and angry, and I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.
Olivia looked like she was about to pass out with barely restrained anger.
Just then, Matt’s mother, Maria, stepped forward.
“Mother, there is no need to be cruel to her. The kind girl only came here to wish you well. And this misunderstanding you talk about, everyone knows she is more suited to stand beside my son, unlike some people.”
She rolled her eyes as she said this.
I grabbed a handful of the bed cloth slowly, trying to stop myself from reacting.
But it was grandma who reacted. She groaned in rage.
“Maria, if you cannot respect my granddaughter-in-law, then do well to leave my room at this instant.”
Matt’s mother seemed pissed, she didn’t even try to hide it. Instead, she turned and walked away.
Matt also carefully led Olivia out.
Everyone soon began leaving grandma’s ward, one after the other, some grumbling with dissatisfaction, until the room was empty.
Before leaving, I caught Benny flash me a small smile, as though reassuring me.
Grandma stopped me from leaving with them, and after the room was empty, she hugged me tightly.
“I’m sorry, child, we failed to raise that boy well. Once I’m discharged, I will definitely talk some sense into him.”
After managing to put grandma to sleep, I slowly left her ward, closing the door softly behind me.
It was only after stepping out that I realized everyone was still there.
Benny rushed toward me. “Is Grandma okay?” she asked carefully.
I nodded.
Matt’s mother and a few others were speaking with Olivia, laughing from time to time.
It was as though she had spotted me, because she seemed to increase her tone.
“Oh darling, you got another masters, and started your own business? That is so beautiful… that is a true definition of a well-bred young lady.”
The others agreed with nods and subtle words.
I wanted to pretend it didn’t hurt much, or that I wasn’t affected by what was happening… but I couldn’t.
For years, they had all shown how clearly they disapproved of my union with Matt.
But they had always been closed off about it, maybe because there was no alternative.
But now that Olivia was back, almost every one of them was willingly showing their fangs.
After all, Olivia had a strong family backing, one they could easily gain from, and I… well, I had nothing to be proud of, just another hopeless orphan girl from an orphanage, probably rejected by her own family.
“Don’t mind Aunt Maria. She can be a little extra at times, but… we do like you,” Benny whispered beside me.
I gave her a small smile. It was only grandma, she and Josh that actually treated me like I was worth something.
“Thank you, Benny.”
She smiled at me. “Come on, Kenny is here… you should go stay with your son.”
I followed her gaze. I didn’t recall asking anyone to bring Kenny, unless Matt did.
But then, my eyes flickered to the small boy sitting in the corner, eating some snacks.
For a moment, his innocent look warmed my heart. I began walking toward him.
But just then, he stood up abruptly, and ran toward me.
I smiled, warmly opening my hands to hug him.
But instead of hugging me, he ran past me and straight to Olivia.
The only thing he said was, “Hi mom.”
~TYLA~There was a loud beep at my front door and I guessed it had been going on until it finally woke me up.I just lay there for a second until I fully recognised where I was. Before I could even move from under the blanket, the bedroom door flew wide open and Vivian exploded into the room.“Time to get up!” she yelled.“Vivi, it’s barely eight in the morning,” I muttered. She shoved a plush white bathrobe into my arms.“I brought you a silk set to wear for the day. Now, go take your bath. I already ordered coffee and pastries downstairs, and they are waiting.”Ten minutes later, I stepped out of the bathroom, feeling refreshed.Vivian was already sitting on my new sofa, nibbling on her croissant, cross-legged.I sat down beside her as I sipped my rich coffee.“So,” I said, nudging her shoulder with a smirk. “Philip told me your latest movie is trending everywhere. How is celebrity life?”Vivian groaned dramatically, tossing her head back onto the cushions.“Oh, please! The industry
~TYLA~Vincent, Vivian and I were together in the glass capsule. Philip had to leave again because he had an emergency. For a while no one spoke in the elevator and the only sound in the air was Vivian’s shaky breathing as she repeatedly dabbed at her eyes while holding my hands.“When Philip called... I didn’t buy it," she muttered, refusing to look up. “I didn’t believe him when he talked about the divorce and you coming back to the office. But, God…Tyla, I am so incredibly sorry. I should have just banged down your door that night, anyway. I shouldn't have let you deal with that Wilson bastard alone for good five years. I…I didn’t know you were not happy. I should have…”Another tear slid down my cheeks. “Don't, Vivi. I’m the one who needs to beg for forgiveness here. You tried to shake some sense into me so many times, and I just... I literally pushed you away. I don’t even deserve to be here. I thought you would hate me and—““I would never. You should know that,” Vivian shook he
~TYLA~Vincent didn’t move. The deep sound of his voice brought a sudden, heavy silence over the entire lobby. The staff stopped moving immediately, keeping their folders and tablets completely still as they felt the shift in the room.Vincet stood completely frozen by the executive elevators, his dark eyes locked onto me.Under his intense stare and the eyes of everyone in the room, I felt completely vulnerable.I pulled the strap of my bag tighter against my simple coat, feeling completely exposed under their watchful eyes.Am I even allowed to be here again? I thought, my throat tightening up.This world used to be so familiar… but it doesn't feel like mine anymore."Tyla...?" he finally called out lightly. “Is that you?”There was complete silence between the both of us for a fleeting second. Was this the wrong time for opening wounds?Maybe I shouldn’t have thought of coming back and thinking he would ever forgive me.However, before I knew what was going on, Vincent broke into a
~TYLA~The apartment was quiet when I stepped inside. It was a simple apartment situated on the sixth floor of the building. Philip had found it for me in a rush and I couldn’t be more thankful.I rolled my small, half-empty suitcase, looking at the four corners of where I was going to start a new life, far away from Matt.My hands felt completely empty without Kenny’s small fingers holding onto them.I felt a dull ache settle deep in my chest.I wondered if my little boy was still giggling on the phone with Olivia and completely unaware that his mother had just walked out of his life to survive. Before I could think about what I had left behind, Philip said softly from behind me, “It’s not much, Tyla. But it is discreet. The lease is under a shell company and definitely no one from the Wilson family will track you here.”I nodded as I walked into the center of the living room, looking around. There was a simple gray sofa. Looking ahead, was a small coffee table then an empty kitchen
~TYLA~I stared at the papers that the lawyer handed me.“Are you sure about this?” he asked gently. This time around, I nodded. And without a second thought, I signed them. After that, I handed the papers back to him, and he looked through them again.“Did you include Kenny’s custody there?” I asked, only to be sure.He nodded. “Yes I did. But it’s clear that Wilsons may be unwilling to let you take him.”For a moment, I replayed all that happened in the hospital, my heart tightening at every turn.Yet, I forced a smile.“Do your best, please. I will not abandon my son.”He nodded, standing to shake my hand. “I will deliver the documents myself.”I smiled. “Thank you, Philip. I appreciate it.”For a moment, Philip paused. It was clear he had something else to say.“Go on, Philip… what is it?”He smiled then. “Well, I was wondering if you were ready to start again. I am still managing the properties, and they are already making a fortune… but, of course, I have also been investing the
~TYLA~I couldn’t move.It was as though my legs were rooted to the spot as I watched Olivia immediately bend down to Kenny’s level, ruffling his hair.Kenny’s giggles were like needles pricking at my skin.“Hello dear, buddy.” She greeted him, warmly, “Enjoying your snack?”Kenny nodded. “I love… love it. Aunt Olivia is the best.”Those were innocent words, yet they did the most damage. It was as though Benny understood what was happening, she took my hand and gave it a light squeeze.Maria, Matt’s mom, took that chance. She also bent to Kenny’s level, her lips wide with a smile. But I could see the mischief in her eyes, clearly whatever she wanted to do wasn’t going to be good.“Do you like your Aunt Olivia?” She asked, caressing Kenny’s little cheeks.Kenny giggled again. “I love Aunt Olivia. She is pretty and kind. She is also a great cook.”I swallowed hard, turning away slightly, my heart racing.Kenny used to praise my cooking so much. But now, he seemed to have fallen in love
