CHAPTER 3: FROST ON HER FINGER

Elena woke up to winter.

Not outside. Inside. Her breath fogged in the air. The sheets were too cold, too soft, smelling like frost and pine and expensive cologne. For a second, she thought she was still dreaming about the garden.

Then she felt it — the second heartbeat.

Not her own. His.

A slow, deep thrum under her ribs that wasn't hers. She sat bolt upright, clutching the duvet — which was not her duvet. This was not her bedroom.

Floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan skyline at 5:12 AM. Snow falling against glass that was on the 42nd floor. A penthouse. Minimal, black and grey and ice-blue, like someone had tried to make a palace out of a bachelor pad.

And in an armchair by the fireplace — which was burning with blue fire — sat Adrian Blackwood, in a black sweater, watching her like she might shatter.

"You're awake," he said quietly. His voice was rougher than last night.

Elena's hand flew to her wrist. The mark was still there. Intertwining vines of frost and starlight, pulsing faintly gold. When she touched it, she felt a jolt — not pain — awareness. Adrian's exhaustion hit her like a wave. He hadn't slept.

"You kidnapped me," she said. Her voice was hoarse.

"I carried you. You passed out after the bond snapped into place. Starlight overload. Your human body isn't used to channeling that much."

"I live three blocks away."

"You were glowing so bright the entire street could see you. And it was still snowing only over your house. I couldn't leave you there. Victoria has eyes everywhere."

Elena swung her legs out of bed. She was wearing an oversized black t-shirt that was definitely his. Her dress from last night — Julian's shirt — was folded neatly on a chair. Her feet were clean. Someone had wiped the snow off.

"Did you —"

"Sophia did," Adrian said quickly, reading her mind. Or feeling her panic through the bond. "My... housekeeper. She's a raven. Well, she can be a raven. She's downstairs. She brought clothes."

As if on cue, a woman with sharp eyes and silver-streaked black hair appeared in the doorway holding two mugs. She looked Elena up and down and grinned.

"So the Starlight Heir lives. I'm Sophia Reyes, before you ask if I'm human. I'm not. I'm your familiar now, technically. Congratulations, you inherited me too."

Elena stared. "This is insane. All of this is insane. Soul-bonds and familiars and Winter Princes —"

"It's a lot before coffee," Sophia said, handing her a mug. It smelled like chocolate and cinnamon. "Drink. Your light is flickering."

Elena looked down. Her fingertips were glowing again. Frost was forming on the mug.

"Make it stop," she whispered. "I don't want this. I want my normal life back. I want Julian to not be cheating and Victoria to not be a witch and —"

"You can't go back," Adrian said, not unkindly. "The necklace suppressed you since you were a baby. Victoria's mother put it on you when you were six months old. That's why you don't remember your real parents. You were hidden. The moment Victoria took it off to use your blood, the seal broke. You will glow. You will freeze things when you're angry. Until you learn control."

"Then teach me," Elena snapped, and the blue fire in the fireplace flared white.

Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Feisty. I like her. Prince, you didn't tell me she was feisty."

Adrian stood. He was close enough now that Elena could feel his warmth, or rather, his cold. Being near him made her own light calm, like a storm finding eye.

"Hold out your hands," he instructed.

Elena hesitated, then did. Her hands shook.

Adrian didn't touch her. He held his hands a breath away from hers. Cold radiated off him.

"Starlight is emotion," he said, voice low, like a tutor. "Winter is control. You feel too much, you spill. I feel too little, I freeze. The bond is supposed to balance us. Focus on my heartbeat. Not yours. Mine."

Elena closed her eyes. She could feel it — that second heartbeat. Slow. Steady. Despite his exhaustion, his heart was calm. Ancient calm.

"Now breathe with me," he said.

She breathed. In. Out. With him. The frost on her fingers began to recede, melting into light that pooled in her palms instead of exploding.

"Good," Adrian murmured. "Now think of something that doesn't make you angry. Think of something... soft."

The first thing that came to Elena's mind was absurd — the way Adrian had looked last night when he said "My queen" with that devastated reverence. Soft. Safe.

The light in her hands formed a perfect sphere, like a captured star. It floated an inch above her skin, humming.

Sophia gasped. "First try? First try she makes a star? Prince, last Starlight took three months to —"

"Quiet," Adrian said, but his voice was hoarse. He was staring at the star in Elena's hands like he'd seen a miracle. Through the bond, Elena felt it — awe, so pure it made her throat tight, and underneath, longing so sharp it hurt.

"You did it," he whispered.

"I did it," Elena echoed, and laughed — a real laugh this time. The star pulsed brighter.

Then it popped. Light showered over them like glitter.

Adrian flinched. For a second, where the light touched his sweater, frost melted, revealing skin underneath. He stared at his own arm like he'd never seen it warm before.

"What was that?" Elena asked.

"You healed a piece of my curse," he said quietly. "No one has been able to warm Winter in 300 years."

The air between them changed. Too close. Too charged. The bond thrummed. Elena could suddenly feel not just his awe, but his attraction — raw, restrained, terrified of scaring her. She felt her own response answer it before she could hide it.

Sophia cleared her throat loudly. "Okay, soul-bonded children, that's enough magical flirting for 5 AM. Elena, your husband has texted you 14 times. Victoria has called 6 times. You have a charity gala tonight that you are still expected to attend with Julian. What do you want to do?"

Elena's stomach dropped. The real world crashing back. She looked at the phone Sophia held out. Julian: "Where are you?? I'm home. Your garden is a mess. We need to talk. Baby please."

Victoria: "Elena?? Call me. You're scaring us."

The rage came back, instant, icy. The starlight in her hands flared red-gold.

"I want to make them choke on their lies," Elena said, and her voice was not soft anymore. It was queen-cold.

Adrian smiled — that sharp winter smile that promised war. "Then we go to the gala. Together. You on my arm. Let them see what happens when they try to bury Starlight."

Sophia grinned. "Now that's the Queen Stands Unconquered energy we need for the contest."

Elena looked at Adrian, at the mark on her wrist that tied her to a prince she barely knew, at the light that wouldn't go out anymore.

"One condition," she said. "You teach me how to fight. Not just control. Fight."

Adrian stepped closer, finally, finally taking her glowing hands in his cold ones. The contact sent a shock through both of them — light and frost colliding, balancing.

"My queen," he said again, softer this time, like a vow. "I will teach you how to burn the world down."

Outside, over Manhattan, the sun rose — but over the penthouse, it kept snowing, just for them.
