Travis

I swung my stick and the puck went sailing... right into Hunter's waiting stick. I gritted my teeth, annoyed at ho impressive he was, which made no sense.

It was more than clear why coach had brought him on as Neal's replacement. Hunter was fast, had a precision level that was rare on ice and could read me like a book. For the past two hours, we had been playing like we had been playing forever, and it was fucking beautiful.

With just one glance from him, one shift of his feet, or the way his body tensed, I knew what he wanted from me. I had heard about telepathy on ice, and while our team had always had good chemistry, Hunter and I's was on another level.

"Take the shot." Sammy called out at me.

I shifted my gaze to Hunter, waiting for his silent signal. He cocked his head, a clear red flag. Instead of listening to Sammy's signal, I continued pushing forward, closer and closer to the net. I could sense Hunter on my heels, and a second later, he had sailed past me.

I knew even before he moved his hockey stick to his left hand what he wanted.

I took the shot just as one of the defencemen crashed into me, my body bouncing against the boards, but it was too late for the opposing mini team.

He caught it perfectly like he had been doing for the whole practice session, and before they could even realize he had the puck, he aimed. A second later, the scoreboard flashed red.

Goal.

"Damn it, I'm done." Sammy groaned, ripping his helmet off. "You two are doing some weird telepathy shit and I can't deal. Nope, I'm leaving."

"What? Why?" I asked, confused.

"Uh, captain." He stared at me like it was obvious. "You might not have noticed but practice time ended about an hour ago. And we're beat."

I hadn't even noticed the time flying past. It had been a while since I had had this much fun playing, and I was hesitant to put an end to it. I began to reach for my helmet, but Hunter's voice stopped me.

"Why don't the rest of you go ahead," he said. "We're just gonna stick around and perfect a few passes."

Our goalie snorted. "Like there's anything left to perfect. Come on, guys, let's get out of here."

I waited till the last of our teammates had filed off the ice before I turned to face Hunter. He was staring at me with a smirk that promised trouble.

"First to get the puck into the net ten times wins."

"Wins what?" I asked suspiciously. Despite how today's practice had gone and our obvious chemistry on the ice, we weren't friends. I wasn't about to hand him an open check.

He shrugged. "Come on Moore, live on the edge a little. Winners choice."

I scoffed. "Like that's going to happen."

"Fine, fine." He chuckled. "Who knew you were such a buzz kill. How about winner gets one question and loser has to answer."

Suspicion curled up within me. "What do you want to know so badly?"

He threw his head back, laughing. "Aren't you at least going to pretend that you can win this?"

I sputtered, "I'm indulging you."

The smile he flashed me was cocky and surprisingly it didn't make me angry. Instead, I found myself biting back an answering smile. What the hell?

"So, we have a deal. One question, whenever I choose. And loser has to answer."

I paused, mind racing. There was no doubt in my mind that he wanted to know about the scars on the inside of my wrist, but I wasn't willing to talk about them. I opened my mouth to end this, but instead, I found myself saying.

"Deal."

Almost two hours later, I regretted that decision. Sweat poured down my back and face, and pooled in every crevice of my body as I pushed my body past the breaking point. We had both slowed down to almost a crawl about half an hour ago, and now it was just pure spite driving us.

I knew my body was going to regret this come tomorrow, but the thought of tapping out when I was this close to winning was unacceptable.

Hunter and I were tied evenly at 9-9. The next goal was going to be the winning one.

"Exhausted, Moore?"

"Nope." I wheezed. "You?"

"Not even close." He panted. "I could run a marathon right now."

I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my mouth. Using my last bit of energy, I pushed forward, literally dragging my skates over the ice. Hunter had the puck and had been slowly inching toward the net during the conversation. The sly bastard.

Just as he made to take the shot, I intercepted it, stealing the puck and spinning around. As I hit the slapshot, my legs gave out under me and I collapsed, breathing hard.

"Fuck." Hunter growled.

I peeked over to see that my shot had made it into the net. I laughed with exhilaration, one last surge of adrenaline from the win coursing through me. "Now I wish I had asked for something crazy, like making you dye your hair or get a tattoo."

"You wish." He dropped down beside me.

Too close.

I tensed for a moment, then relaxed. He was probably just too tired to move, so I said nothing. But there was an awareness at the back of my mind that if I turned my head, my face would be barely an inch from his. I didn't know why that mattered, but the thought refused to leave my head.

"I don't know if_"

Hunter was cut off by the booming sound of coach's voice. "What are you two still doing here? Go home, right now. It's almost nine pm for God's sake."

9pm?

My stomach dropped. Every trace of adrenaline vanished and I felt the blood drain from my face.

No.

No, no, no.

“We're late for dinner."

"So?" Hunter shot me a dry look. "It's just dinner. We can skip it."

To him, it was just a family dinner. He didn't understand, and I hoped he never would. I rose to my feet, body protesting the move and began to hobble off the ice.

"What the hell?" He called out, but I didn't stop.

For one second, I had forgotten that I was Michael Moore's son and allowed myself to enjoy being on the ice. I had made that mistake once, several years ago. I couldn't afford to make it again.

HunterI couldn’t sleep. And I was exhausted. My body felt like it had been beaten with a hockey stick, and my eyes burned every time I blinked. But apparently none of that mattered to the universe because Travis and half the fucking team had decided that midnight was the perfect time to hold a video game tournament downstairs.“Pass the ball!”“I’m trying!”“You’re shit!”“Shut the fuck up!”A roar of laughter followed.I buried my face in my pillow.Five seconds later, somebody downstairs screamed.I threw the pillow across the room and sat up. “Jesus Christ.”For someone who claimed to value discipline and routine, Travis Moore had absolutely no problem turning the house into a frat house when his friends were around. The irony wasn’t lost on me.Even Michael being in the house didn’t bother me as much as the noise did.Michael Moore made me uneasy. There was something about the man that made me feel like I was constantly being evaluated, even when he wasn’t looking at me. Maybe it

HunterSomething was wrong.I couldn’t put my finger on it at first.I sat at the end of the bench, elbows resting on my knees, watching the scrimmage unfold in front of me. Neal had the puck, skating hard down the right side while Travis cut toward the net.It should have been easy. But then Neal passed and Travis... missed it completely. The puck sailed past his stick and slammed against the boards.“Fuck!” Neal shouted.Travis spun around. “My bad.”Neal stared at him. “Your bad?”Travis didn’t answer. The play reset.I frowned.Maybe it was a fluke.Five minutes later, Neal sent another pass toward Travis. He moved too early and the puck slipped behind him. It was definitely not a fluke I decided as I watched another missed opportunity. Then another. And another.I leaned back against the bench, wondering what the hell was wrong.Travis Moore had been playing hockey long enough that he could probably anticipate a teammate’s movement before the guy even knew he was going to move. Hunter"I should take care of that for you." Travis broke the silence.I shot him a look and he motioned at my obvious hard on. I shook my head and lifted myself to my feet, knowing my knees were going to pay later for staying on the hard bathroom floor."Rain check.""Looks like it hurts." He argued.A smile tugged on my mouth. "You sound desperate to get my dick in your mouth, brother."His jaw clenched. "Whatever." And then he turned around and adjusted the temperature of the shower spray until icy droplets rained down on us.Shaking the water out of my face, I stepped back, then chucked my clothes. "Wait a few before coming out."And then I gathered my soaked clothes, grabbed my towel that i had stowed earlier and walked away.I pushed through the locker-room door with my towel slung around my neck, my hair still damp, and forced myself to walk like my heart wasn’t trying to punch its way through my ribs.I needed a minute.Just one minute before Travis followed me.Before I had t

  • Tainted ice: my stepbrother is my rival    Under the spray

TravisThe locker room was empty by the time I reached it.I should have been relieved. Instead, I felt strangely restless.I tossed my racket into my locker and dragged a hand through my damp hair. The game had left me sweaty and exhausted, but somehow my mind was still running.Mostly because I knew that any second Hunter would walk in.Right on cue, I heard the door click open. I glanced toward the doorway and met his dark gaze on me. A shiver worked it's way through me.Slowly, he leaned against the frame, eyes never leaving mine.Neither of us spoke. The silence stretched until it became almost unbearable, becoming a thrum under my skin, an itch I couldn't scratch. I was the first to tear my gaze away.I grabbed my towel and headed toward the showers. At the entrance, I looked over my shoulder.“You coming?” the words were a croak.Hunter didn’t answer. His mouth parted slightly, but whatever he wanted to say seemed to disappear before it reached his lips.I turned away.A moment

  • Tainted ice: my stepbrother is my rival    Forty-love!

TravisThere were few things more irritating than losing. Losing to Hunter was apparently one of them.“Forty-love!” Mr. Pritchett’s shout was followed by a burst of laughter from across the court.I gripped the racket tighter.“This is getting embarrassing,” Pritchett called. “Aren’t you even going to try to lose to butter me up for that investment?”My father laughed. “You wouldn’t respect me if I did that.”“True enough.”Hunter grinned, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet.I glared at him.He caught my stare. “What?”“You’re enjoying this too much.”His grin widened. “Maybe you’re just bad at tennis.”I scoffed. “I’m not bad.”“You’ve missed three serves.”“Because you keep distracting me.”He raised an eyebrow. “That’s my fault too? Maybe it's a good thing I'm being benched for the rest of the season after all."The game resumed, and he made his way back to his position across the court. My father served and I moved fast, slamming it back over the net. Hunter moved first.

  • Tainted ice: my stepbrother is my rival    White Palm club

Hunter Travis dumped me as soon as we arrived at the club, disappearing with some guy that had on a $16,000 dollar watch and a haircut that I was sure cost too much. I glanced around, hands in my pocket, trying to appear more confident than I felt. I thought about tailing Travis just to annoy him, but decided against it. If he wanted to act like a petulant teen, he could be my guest. We weren't friends, and the more distance I put between us, the better for me. At least until I could figure out how exactly I planned to get him to spill the passcode. With a sigh, I made my way through the club, taking in the lay of the land. Everywhere I turned, there was yet another preppy looking asshole. The total networth here could buy a small country, I was sure. Conversations fluttered around, and I heard the words boat, yacht and beach house more times than I cared to count. Just as I made up my mind to find a receptionist or something, someone tapped me from behind. I whirled around to

Hunter. Locating Travis hadn't been difficult. The entire team seemed to have an obsession with posting their every move on Instagram. A little stalking of Sammy's page and I found a blurry photo of them with their location tagged. I knew Travis didn't want me anywhere around him. I knew he hated

Hunter There's a strange tension at dinner. As a matter of fact, there's always a strange tension when Travis and Michael are within ten feet of each other. Hunter "I was open, why the hell didn't you pass to me?" I bit out for what had to be the millionth time. Hunter By the time my alarm rang the next morning, my eyes felt raw from staring into the dark all night long. I hadn't gotten a wink of sleep, and it was all because of damn Travis. I knew he would be a problem when mum first told me she was getting married to Mr. Moore. I had already known abou
