SELENA'S POV:
A FEW WEEKS LATER: “We are here Miss Selena.” The chauffeur announced, finally making me aware of my surroundings. It had been about two weeks since I had been heartbroken, divorced and I lost everything, and two weeks since I turned twenty-one. It was worth reckoning because that night, my family's lawyer, Mr George, who had been our lawyer since I was a kid informed me that in the multitude of properties, companies, money, that my parents had left for me, my grandmother and parents had still set up a trust fund for me. And that was his surprise for me. As soon as I told him what had gone on between David and I, he had sent cars to pick me up and during those few days, he and his wife, Miss Daisy, had been so good to me, they never scolded me but I have learned a great lesson. We finalized the documents and I received everything secured for me in the trust fund, deeds to property and one of my mother's company, as well as a handsome amount of money. They were all located in Resiph, about a six hours flight away from here and after so much wallowing in my pain, I realized I needed to get up and start my life all over again but I needed to do one thing. I needed to meet with Henry Scott, Sandra's fiancé. Did he know Sandra was cheating on him? Was it in all their plans to use me for my kindness? Why didn't he come for Sandra? I was curious and I needed to know, in order to turn over the chapter and move on. Before traveling here, I had gone to the house, I had to sneak into my own house with David, with the help of Maria who had helped me enter while they were gone. I grabbed a few documents, my birth certificate and some pictures of my parents and a few of my other belongings in my box. While I was about to leave searching for my car key, Sandra and David barged in holding each other along with a whole lot of shopping bags from various designer stores. I froze in fear and my heart hurt when I saw the two of them. The rage in David’s eye at the sight of me, had me wishing the floor just opened up and swallowed me. He laughed and licked his lips sharply, “Where do you think you’re going with all of that?” He rushed towards me and snatched the box for me, “Have you forgotten what I told you? This belongs to me, you fool! And right now do you know what I plan to do? Burn this!” He rushed outside and I followed behind him begging, not because of the clothes in the box but because of my photo album inside. “David please don't do this” I pleaded and tried to grab the box but he aggressively pushed me to the concrete floor and Sandra happily handed him the lighter. “DAVID, A WHOLE OF PICTURES OF MY PARENTS ARE IN THERE!” He simply mimicked my words, lighting it up and Sandra happily did the same and suggested going to bring more my ‘trash’. In an attempt to hit him in anger , I only got thrown to the floor again and Sandra laughed, calling me ‘pathetic’. “I’ve been looking for ways to divorce you or just kill you, I have been so happy since you left. So don’t you dare bring your disgusting self or I will kill you, I put that on your grandmother’s grave.” So I left with the documents, birth certificate and just a picture of my parents and I as well another little picture of my grandmother that I had saved and nothing else, with my heart full of pain and mind disturbed by their words and actions. However, I had discovered Henry Scott resided in Resiph as well, which was great in a way since I was starting my life here and I had arrived last night. I booked an appointment with him, which was right now, scheduled around five. I'm pretty certain I was one of the last people he was meeting with. “Thank you.” I appreciated my new chauffeur, Waters, and hopped out of the black white Mercedes-Benz, dragging down my royal blue gown which hugged my curves like a glove, hiding all my bruises and scars. I straightened my hair and let it down, and applied light makeup. I felt pretty before leaving my house but with the stairs from the employees who were already heading out, I wasn't sure anymore. The receptionist stared at me for a whole sixty seconds with a facial expression I couldn't read, before directing me to the top floor for my meeting with their CEO. I couldn't help but feel nervous as I stood in the elevator and it had nothing to do with the man in a black leather jacket who kept tapping his feet repeatedly and pulling his fingers. Was he as nervous as I was? We both went our separate ways without uttering a word to each other and I headed to the secretary's desk. “I'm here for my meeting with Henry Scott. Selena Brown.” It felt weird saying my maiden surname, and not David's. “Right this way, Miss Brown.” She had a polite smile on her face, as she directed me into the office. His office was luxurious, wide and cool as it was warm outside. It had such a calming atmosphere and when we stepped in, he was staring out at the city with a cup of coffee in his hand. “Sir, your five o clock is here.” She announced and he turned around, instantly locking eyes with me. We stared at each other for what felt like forever, but his stare was intense, it was like he was staring into my soul so I cleared my throat and looked away. “Thank you, Elsa.” He appreciated and she cleared her throat, shutting the door. “You are beautiful.” He blurted out, gazing at me with the most intense gaze ever. I stood in my spot like I got stuck and scratched the back of my neck awkwardly feeling my cheeks turning a light shade of red at the compliment. He thought I was beautiful? I thought he was a beautiful man as well but unlike him, I'd never say it out loud. I had seen pictures of him and he looked good but standing before him, with the sunset rays on his amazingly crafted face with white shirt sleeve rolled up, I was amazed. This had to be the most handsome man I had ever laid my eyes on. He took a seat and smiled, mesmerising me further as he looked ten times better with a smile on his face. “Are you going to stand there, beautiful or would you like to have a seat?” His voice was deep yet soothing and the way my name rolled out his tongue sent shivers through my spine. Stay focused, Selena. This isn't what you are here for. I took a seat and heaved out a breath, trying to ignore his eyes burning holes through my face. “I am Selena Brown, daughter of Christian Brown. And ex-best friend of Sandra Keith. Does that ring a bell?” I raised my eyebrow and he looked at me with a furrowed eyebrow. “I know who you are and who your father is, which is the major reason I agreed to this meeting. But your best friend or ex- best friend doesn't ring a bell.” He leaned back in his seat, watching me and I stared back at him, chuckling a bit. “Come on, Henry Scott. My best friend, Sandra, was going to get married to you some weeks back in Luresia. This is a picture of her.” I handed him my phone and he looked at me still confused. “I don't know who this lady is, I have never seen her a day in my life and I have never even been to Luresia.” He handed me back my phone and I could see the sincerity in his eyes which only crushed me. “So she lied.” I chuckled humorlessly. “My husband was really the man in her life all along, you didn't exist in her life, you didn't impregnate her, there was never a romantic engagement or wedding plans. It was all to make money off of me and play games with me.” I laughed again, and a hot single tear rolled down my cheek so I quickly wiped it away. “I am so sorry for wasting your time and it was just something I needed to clear up. Thank you for meeting with me.” I stumbled on my words and rose to my feet, scared to meet his eyes. He must think I'm crazy or pathetic. “Selena.” He called out as I turned around, ready to dash out of his office and I met his worried gaze. “Would you like to join me for dinner? You know…to apologize for wasting my time and to talk about your ‘so-called’ fiancée. Amongst other things.” He held eye contact with me while I debated on going to dinner with him or not. I agreed reluctantly and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made in a long time.SELENA’S POV:“Without your help, it would have been difficult to find me,” I told her. “And Joey had also taken someone important from your life and chosen the easy way out. It’s unfair but I’m so grateful to you.”“You’re welcome and thank you too. I promise I’m never going to bring up weird sexual conversation ever again.” She added and we stared at each other for a second before chuckling. And that was enough for me.As the sun dipped low and the sky turned pastel, Hailey climbed onto the wooden stage we’d set up. Henry joined her, carrying Harvey in one arm and a little sparkly mic in the other.“Daddy and I wrote a song!” Hailey declared, eyes twinkling.“Oh no,” I muttered, laughing as the family clapped and whistled. What followed was a hilariously off-key, half-sung, half-spoken original tune called "Hailey the Brave," complete with hand motions and Henry purposely missing the beat. Harvey clapped with every verse like it was the best show on Earth.By the time they were done
SELENA’S POV:I didn’t know when the tears started rolling down my own face. I just sat there in silence as she cried and cried, until there were no more words, just breath. I knew how badly she’d wanted another child for her son. They had already decorated the room, bought the tiny clothes, folded baby blankets that hadn’t been used yet. She had dreamed of hearing little feet running through their home again. My heart broke for her. I wanted to reach through the phone and just hold her.So I said the only things I could. That she was already such a beautiful mother. That the love she gave was more than enough for any child. And that sometimes, life doesn’t give us exactly what we asked for, but it still gives us love in the ways we didn’t expect. I reminded her that all our children, mine, Olivia’s, Zoey’s, they were also family to Ryan. That’s why, next holiday, Hailey would be going over to spend it with them. Because we were more than friends now. We were sisters. And our kids? Th
SELENA’S POV:And then I slowly backed away, swaying my hips as I walked off, turning back to wink at him while he shook his head and laughed, looking at me like I was the only girl in the world. Of course I am.I turned my head slowly, just looking around and soaking everything in, and that’s when I saw Zoey walking in, holding hands with Blake. The two of them looked like they had just stepped out of a love story. Zoey was glowing, really glowing, not from makeup or lights, but from the kind of glow that comes from peace and growth and happiness. She was wearing this soft yellow dress that hugged her body so nicely, and her hair was curled in this way that looked like she didn’t even try too hard, but still came out looking like a queen. She looked so strong. Not just physically, but in that quiet, powerful way women do when they’ve been through so much and still come out standing tall. She looked like someone who had walked through fire and turned into gold. I couldn’t help but smi
SELENA’S POV:FIVE YEARS LATER:“Selena!!!”I turned around quickly, just in time to see Olivia waving at me with both hands, full of excitement like a child who just saw her best friend after forever. Her smile was wide, her whole face lit up like sunshine, and before I could even wave back, I noticed her husband, Ace, trying to catch up behind her while also keeping an eye on their little boy, Derek, who was already running through the grass like a tiny hurricane, full of energy and zero fear, like only a three-year-old could be.Olivia and Ace had gotten married about a year after my kidnapping, and honestly, it was one of the most beautiful weddings I had ever witnessed in my life. They chose to do it by the beach, with the waves crashing softly in the background, and it felt like something out of a dream. I remember standing beside her as her maid of honor, my heart full and happy, because everyone knew how much Olivia adored me and how close we were. I cried that day, not sad te
SELENA’S POV:AT THE HOSPITAL:The lights of the emergency room hit me as soon as the ambulance doors opened. Voices, loud and urgent, swirled around me, paramedics yelled orders, nurses rushing to prepare. But all I could focus on was Henry’s body, limp and pale, being wheeled ahead with urgency.“No! Please!” I screamed, trying to run after him, but my legs felt like stone. My body was still shaking from all that happened with Joey, but none of that compared to the horror of watching the love of my life bleed out in front of me. My knees jerked forward, and if not for Cameron catching me, I would’ve collapsed right there on the floor.“He’s going to be okay. He has to be,” Cameron muttered, though his voice shook like he was assuring himself too.Liv rushed in moments later, her eyes immediately scanning the chaos before falling on me. She broke into a sprint, hugging me so tightly I could barely breathe. Cherry, Gabby, Julian, Mr and Mrs Scott and everyone else.“Selena. God. You’r
3RD POV:The darkness inside swallowed him up, and he pressed himself against the wall, trying to adjust his eyes. His heart was pounding so hard he could feel it in his teeth. Just then he saw Joey locked the rear exit where he was just coming from. “Why couldn’t you just love me back?” Joey’s voice cracked like something was breaking inside him. His grip on Selena tightened as he pulled her toward a far corner of the room. “We were supposed to run away together! Just you and me! You ruined everything!”Selena twisted in his grip, her eyes blazing through her tears. “You did this, Joey! You!” she spat out, voice shaking. “This isn’t love, it’s obsession! It’s sick! You keep calling it love, but it’s not. I don’t even know who you are anymore! Please, just let me go. If not for me, then at least do it for my daughter. Please, Joey, I’m begging you.”Henry was angry as he overheard their conversation, clenching and unclenching his jawOutside, officers took positions, guns raised, wait
