Elara’s POV

I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath until my chest started hurting. The hall had gone dead quiet—like the kind of silence that pressed against my ears. The kind that told me something was about to go very, very wrong.

And it did.

“Lord Vale,” the attendant called out.My stomach dropped as a sick, twisted chill crawled up my spine.“Your ward, Lyria Vale, has been chosen.”

For a second, I didn’t react or move.I didn’t even blink because my brain just refused to cooperate. Then I saw my father. And that’s when it hit hard. His face looked like someone had just gutted him alive.I had never seen my father cry but then I saw actual tears slide down his face in front of an entire hall full of vultures pretending to be nobles.

That’s when the world snapped back into focus. “No!” I gasped because the name they announced, belonged to my little sister, step sister if I had to use the technical term.

I didn’t hear the rest of it. Didn’t care about the fake “congratulations,” didn’t care about the murmurs or the way people suddenly wouldn’t look at me or my father. Because they all knew.Everyone fucking knew. This wasn’t luck. This wasn’t honor. This was a death sentence dressed up as a wedding proposal-a royal command.

“I require a bride for my nephew.” That voice still echoed in my head. King Alaric hadn’t raised his voice. He didn’t need to.Men like him never did.“I am offering land, power and legacy.”

It was more like — “offer me a girl for my crippled, spoiled brat, or I’ll take something worse…your lives for example”!

No one stepped forward. Of course they didn’t.Who wouldn't look out for themselves?! Because everyone knew who the nephew was and what he was capable of.

And when the silence dragged too long, the king smiled.“Then we’ll leave it to chance.”

Fun fact-there was nothing random about fear. There was nothing random about forcing every unmarried girl’s name onto those cursed pieces of parchment. And then my little sister turned out to be the unlucky one?!

Still didn’t make it hurt any less.

“Elara…” My father's voice dragged me back, soft, careful, like I might shatter if he spoke too loudly.

I was standing in front of a large mirror, staring at someone I barely recognized.I looked ridiculous.Like some porcelain doll dressed up for slaughter.

I couldn't let my little sister do this. I couldn't send her to the monster so I volunteered to become the offering instead.Umm, scratch that! My step mother coerced me into it basically but I couldn't tell her no,because my father looked more comfortable and relaxed with this alternative.

The gown was a gift from the king. It clung perfectly. Embroidery curled along my waist. My hair was done.My skin was glowing under candlelight.I almost looked ethereal.Funny how someone could look like a dream while living a nightmare.

“Father… please don’t,” I muttered when I caught his reflection. He was trying not to cry again.Trying but failing badly.

“I… I never imagined…” he started, and his voice cracked halfway through.

I closed my eyes briefly, preparing myself because parenting a parent was honestly exhausting.“It’s not your fault,” I said automatically. Then I paused.Because that wasn’t entirely true.I looked at him again. His guilt was suffocating, crushing. However it was also true that he didn’t choose the system.“The choice was never yours,” I added anyway, softer. Then my jaw tightened.“It was made by someone else.”

We didn’t say his name.We didn’t have to.The king’s shadow hung between the two of us like a cursed apparition. My father stepped closer, hesitant, like he wasn’t sure he was allowed to touch me anymore.“Elara… if there had been another way—”

“There wasn’t,” I cut in, sharper than I meant to.I let out a breath, running a hand over my face.“Not under his tyranny. You know that.”

Silence followed,heavy,awkward,but real.

My father and I always had conflicting political views, however it seemed like he was about to agree with me on this one. “A win at last”, I internally scoffed.

Turning back to the mirror, I smoothed down my dress just to have something to do.“I used to think I’d marry for love,” I said after a moment, almost laughing at myself.Gosh, what a stupid, naive thought it was.“Someone who’d actually see me for who I was. Not as a deal. Not as some bargaining chip.” My reflection stared back.My eyes still looked soft, hopeful, like an idiot.“That version of me didn’t last long, huh?” I muttered.

A face flickered in my mind—someone from not very long before. Someone who did make me believe in that crap,Lucious! Now he was gone like a stranger whom I didn't know anymore.

Everyone leaves, or gets taken, like my mother, then my father… That’s just how this world works,at least for me. Now I get handed off to a man I’ve never even met,who isn't even supposed to be a ‘man’ in the true essence of the word.

I met my father’s gaze again.“They say he’s ruthless.You've met him.Tell me,how ruthless is he?”

My father flinched.“Elara! He is Alpha blooded, a little hot headed—"

“He’s feared for some reason.Even the subordinate Alphas under the King fear him like death reincarnated,” I snapped. “There must be a good reason why…” My father gulped. I laughed, hollow…sharp.“And I’m supposed to stand beside him like some pretty little offering? Smile? Be grateful?”

He closed his eyes like I’d slapped him.“Please,” he said quietly. “For the family… for the kingdom… just try to endure it.”

Endure?! I almost lost it right there.Instead, I just let out a slow breath.“Endure,” I repeated. The word tasted like ash.For a moment, I saw the version of me that would cry, scream, beg for another way.But she was gone.Buried somewhere between the piles of broken promises and this room.So I straightened up,lifted my chin, squared my shoulders. And just like that, she disappeared completely.“I will,” I replied calmly.

His eyes filled up again—pride and heartbreak mixing in a way that made my chest ache for my old man. “That’s my daughter,” he whispered.

Yeah!Lucky me!!!

  • Taking a Chance with the Crippled Alpha   Stand up

Elara’s POVI burst through the doors of my chambers, my chest heaving, my body trembling with a rage so profound it felt like it would consume me whole. The shift back to human form had been brutal—not because of the physical toll, but because of the fury that had built with every stride back to the castle. My wolf had wanted to turn back, to find the black wolf, to protect him. She simply wouldn't shift back. But I had forced her… shoved her back. I couldn't bear to think about it.I stood in the middle of my room, naked and shaking, my fists clenched at my sides. The silk curtains billowed in the night breeze, mocking me with their softness. The candles flickered. Everything was so peaceful. So normal. And I wanted to scream.Instead, I paced. Back and forth, back and forth, my bare feet pressing into the cold stone floor. The friction helped ground me, but only barely. My mind couldn't stop thinking about the black wolf's massive body positioning itself between me and danger. T

Elara’s POVI leaned further into the wolf, letting his warmth seep into my skin. The tension that had coiled in my chest since, slowly unwound, replaced by something serene. My fingers traced lazy patterns through his midnight fur, marveling at the contradiction of the texture—so impossibly soft, yet I could feel the steel of muscle beneath. He rumbled again, that deep, contented sound that vibrated through my entire body. I smiled, resting my cheek against the crown of his head."I don't know why you're here," I murmured, my voice barely audible. "But I'm glad you are."His tail swept across the ground once, twice. A response, I presumed. An acknowledgment perhaps. I closed my eyes, letting myself exist in this moment. The cool night air on my skin. The solid warmth of the wolf beneath my hands as if taking away all the negativity that I had been feeling…it was like osmosis. The distant song of crickets played like background music and the whisper of wind through the pines, made

Elara's POVI couldn't sit there another moment. The food had turned sour in my mouth. Ruth's words churned in my mind. Richard was trying to tell me something similar until these people…these bastards drove him off. And Dustan's silence, his careful avoidance of my gaze, made me want to scream.I set my cutlery down with more force than was necessary. "I'm feeling too full," I announced, wiping my lips with my napkin. "I'm going to go for a run. I need to burn it off."I pushed back from the table, already turning towards the door. “ And Dustan, please don't send your uncle's men after me. I am not running off. I will be back. I give you my words.”Ruth was on her feet immediately. "Oh, that sounds fun! I'm coming with you—""No." I raised my hand, stopping her mid-step. "No, you are not."Cassian's head snapped up at my tone. I could see the surprise in his eyes—no one talked to Ruth like that. Even Ruth herself looked shocked, her mouth hanging open slightly."I want to go for a

Dustan's POVThe silence stretched on.The food on my plate had grown cold, but I couldn't bring myself to care.I could see the way Elara carefully avoided my gaze. Then Ruth suddenly set down her wine glass with a decisive clink."Alright!" She beamed. Her bright smile was completely at odds with the tension in the room. "Everyone seems a little too tense. Guess the Alphas didn't do much at the meet, did they?" She reached for the wine decanter, pouring generous amounts for everyone at the table. "That goes in favor of my brothers, really. Not that they need anyone to carry them.” She flashed that infectious smile at Cassian and me before continuing with whatever rant. “Those Alphas are useless anyway. Should pass on the throne to the next generation already. Those old mutts." She rolled her eyes dramatically. "But wolves are proud, you know."She nudged Elara with her elbow, then pointed her wine glass directly at me. "Especially Alpha wolves."I kept my expression neutral, thou

Dustan’s POVI have no idea why I agreed to this dinner… I sat at the head of the table, my wheelchair positioned at the perfect angle to observe everything while appearing disinterested. Ruth was on my left, chattering away about nothing in particular. Cassian was on my right, his posture rigid, his eyes constantly scanning the room like he expected an attack at any moment. And Elara was across from me.She hadn't looked at me once since we'd sat down. Not once. She stared at her food with the kind of intensity usually reserved for life-or-death situations. Her fingers absent mindedly curled a strand of her hair. She was lost in thought—I could see it in the way her eyes glazed over, in the way she moved her spoon through her soup without actually eating any of it.I watched her from the corner of my eyes, my heart aching with a pain I couldn't quite name. She'd seen me with Lyria. I knew she had. The way she'd fled from the garden, the way she'd refused to look at me now—it all po

Elara's POVI dropped down on the floor, my back pressed against the door, my body wracked with sobs I couldn't control. The tears wouldn't stop coming and I hated every time I thought I'd cried myself dry, another wave would hit me, and I'd be gasping for air all over again.I could identify my pattern, I was almost understanding my trigger… it wasn't just Lyria. I mean it was, but more than her, it was a culmination of all the betrayals… Of all people. Of all the women in the world, he had to have his eyes on her? Not that having his eyes on any other woman would make it any less difficult…but this one person who had stolen everything from me—my father's love, my betrothed, my dignity. And now she was trying to steal my husband too. Not that I gave much fuck about this husband… that's what I kept saying myself. We had sex… it was just because we were mates… the attraction was too much… That was it. There was nothing emotional…nothing… no affection. I pressed my hands against my
