Astrid’s Pov

Please, please, please stop. Please, I don’t want to die. Please, I beg of you, don’t do this.

The voice was mine, but I didn’t recognize it. It came out strangled and broken, trembling with a kind of fear I had never felt before. My own scream echoed back at me, swallowed up by the thick darkness that coiled like smoke in the corners.

“Wake up,” I whimpered. “Wake up, Astrid. You’re dreaming. Wake up… wake up…”

I clenched my eyes shut, my heart galloping in my chest.

“Wake up!”

I shot upright in bed, lungs burning as if I hadn’t breathed in hours. My sheets were tangled around me like a net, soaked with sweat. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. My eyes darted wildly around the room.

That’s when I knew.

It wasn’t a dream.

Something was wrong.

There were sounds, real ones. Not in my head and not from the nightmare. They came from outside, from everywhere. Crashes, screams, the sickening crack of splintering wood, and the unmistakable roar of fire.

I slipped off the bed, every nerve in my body screaming. My feet barely touched the floor as I crept toward the door, each step slow and careful. My pulse thundered in my ears.

Then the door slammed open.

I screamed.

And my mother fell through it.

“Mama!”

She collapsed at my feet, blood pouring from a wound in her stomach, soaking her gown, her hands, and the floor. Everything.

“No, no, no. Mama, what happened?” I dropped to my knees, trying to catch her, but I was too late. Her eyes fluttered open and her trembling fingers clutched my arm.

“Astrid,” she whispered, her breath sharp and ragged. “You need to run. Right now. Don’t ask questions. Run and don’t come back.”

“What?” My voice cracked with panic. “What do you mean? What’s going on? Mama, you’re bleeding. We need to go—”

“They’re here.” Her voice grew urgent, almost fierce. “They’re here, Astrid. And I won’t let them take you.”

“Who? Who is here?” I was crying, shaking. “What are you talking about? We need to go together!”

“The Valkarion warriors,” she said, and my blood turned to ice.

My mouth went dry. “Valkarion? You mean from the Wolf Kingdom? What do they want with us?”

“I don’t have time to explain!” she snapped, then winced in pain and gasped. “You have to trust me. Go. Now. Through the back door. Run toward the woods. East side. Do not look back.”

My heart was breaking. “No, you’re coming with me. You promised! You said we’d always be together. Don’t do this, don’t leave me, Mama—”

“I’m right behind you,” she said softly, her hand cradling my cheek for just a second. “Go. And Astrid, no matter what, do not tell anyone who you are. You are human, do you understand me? Human. No matter what they say, no matter what you feel. You are human.”

I shook my head, tears blinding me. “Why are you saying this? What do you mean?”

“RUN!”

The word cracked like thunder and jolted me to my feet.

I stumbled toward the back, my mind a chaotic blur. The smell of smoke grew stronger. Screams rose in the distance. I could see the fires, flames licking up the walls of nearby homes. People were being dragged from their houses and slaughtered in the open.

Monsters. Real monsters, glowing eyes, thick fangs, wolves.

My legs moved on their own, but my heart refused to follow.

I reached the back door and then I saw Tessa.

My best friend stood a few feet away, eyes wide with terror, blood on her clothes.

She looked me straight in the eye and whispered, “See you on the other side, Astrid.”

And just like that, they slaughtered her right there in front of me.

I screamed so hard I thought my soul would tear through my throat. My knees gave way, but I forced myself up again, stumbling forward in blind panic as my heart shattered into pieces.

Then, just as I reached the edge of the woods, a hand gripped my wrist. Hard.

I gasped and spun around.

Then it was total darkness.

****

The screams pulled me back to consciousness. My head pounded like I’d been thrown against stone. My limbs felt stiff. My body was on the ground.

I turned slowly, confusion thick in my chest. People were sprawled around me, faces I knew. Stormvale villagers. Men, women, even children. Some were groaning. Others lay still.

My breath caught as I spotted familiar clothing. This wasn’t a dream anymore. We had really been taken.

That’s when I saw the Valkarion warriors.

And suddenly it all made sense. We were in Valkarion.

Before I could move, one of them grabbed me, his grip bruising, and yanked me to my feet like I weighed nothing. Others were being pulled up too, forced to stand. The air reeked of fear, smoke, and blood.

Cries echoed. Whimpers. The sound of someone being hit.

And then I saw him.

Sitting on what looked like a throne carved from bone and obsidian, draped in power and shadows, was the most breathtaking man I had ever laid eyes on. He was too perfect, too terrifying. His hazel eyes glinted like ice under the moonlight, and his dark hair flowed to his shoulders in soft waves. He looked like he belonged to another world entirely, a cruel god sent to break us.

Beside him stood a woman. Tall, elegant, with eyes like sharpened sapphires and hair as dark as nightfall. She was so beautiful it made my chest ache, but even more terrifying was the way she flinched at the sight of blood on the floor and then smiled.

And then I saw Allen.

Our leader was being dragged like a broken doll by two Valkarion guards. His face was bruised and bloodied, but still defiant.

The man on the throne, the Alpha King, tilted his head slightly and spoke. His voice was low and cold enough to freeze time itself.

“You think you could ambush me, Allen? Is that how Stormvale plays its game?”

Allen opened his mouth, probably to explain or beg or try something. But the Alpha King waved a hand.

“I don’t need an explanation.” His voice cut sharper than any blade. “Kill him. And the rest too.”

No hesitation. Just death sentences.

That was when I stopped breathing.

My legs gave out beneath me, but the warrior holding me didn’t let go. I watched Allen struggle as they dragged him away, and then chaos erupted. Cries. Begging. I couldn’t process any of it.

Why? What did we do?

The blade sang through the air, and I knew I was next. I turned to the woman beside the Alpha King, hoping and praying for any flicker of mercy. But she only flinched as blood splattered near her, and her lips curled into something close to amusement.

She enjoyed this?

A cruel beauty.

I closed my eyes.

I was next.

Please… please let it be quick.

Then—

“Stop.”

The voice that thundered across the space didn’t come from a soldier.

It was him.

The Alpha King.

  • Taming The Alpha’s Curse   Chapter 25

Xavier’s PovI sat at the head of the long table in the dining hall. The room felt quieter than usual. Only Caden and Talon were with me tonight. Aliyah was not here and I knew exactly why. She was still angry about what happened in my chambers. I did not mind her absence. Sometimes her silence was better than her endless questions.Astrid moved around the table like a quiet shadow. She poured wine for me first, then Talon, before she moved to Caden. Her hands were steady but I could see small cuts on her fingers from the dungeon. When she finished she went to stand in the corner. From that distance she could not hear our conversation. Good. I stared at her for a moment longer than I should have. My eyes traced the way my coat still hung on her shoulders even though she had changed her dress.Caden and Talon kept looking at me with intense eyes. I put my cup down and spoke first. “If you guys have something to tell me just say it.”Talon leaned back in his chair and smiled. “What make

  • Taming The Alpha’s Curse   Chapter 24

Astrid’s PovI stood there in the middle of that dark dungeon for what felt like forever. My legs would not stop shaking. I still could not believe what had just happened. One moment I was sure the mad wolf would tear me apart and eat me alive. The next moment Alpha Xavier appeared like a storm and killed the beast right in front of me. He saw part of my body. He saw my bare breast when my clothes tore. That thought kept coming back even though it should not be the most important thing right now. I was supposed to be dead. Yet I was still breathing.I looked down at the floor. Blood covered my skin and my torn dress. Some of it came from the mad wolf when Alpha Xavier fought him. The big dead body lay a few steps away from me. I did not know what to feel. Should I feel sorry for the creature? Should I feel guilt? I did not know. But one thing was very clear in my mind. If Alpha Xavier had not come when he did I would be the one lying dead on this cold floor. Or maybe something even wo

  • Taming The Alpha’s Curse   Chapter 23

Xavier’s PovI stormed out of that cursed dungeon, my boots leaving bloody footprints on the cold stone floor. My hands were still dripping with the mad wolf’s thick, dark blood. It coated my fingers, my claws, even my forearms. But the blood wasn’t what had me on edge. It was her.Astrid.The moment I saw her down there, clothes torn, soft pale skin exposed, one full breast nearly spilling out, her chest heaving with terror, her scent flooding the air like sweet wild honey mixed with fear—I lost control. Her breathing was fast and shallow. Her eyes were wide, glistening. And when I covered her with my coat, my fingers had brushed against that warm, bare skin. Just that small touch sent fire racing through my veins straight to my cock. I was rock hard the entire time I slaughtered that beast. I didn’t say a word when Aliyah ordered her to the dungeon. I couldn’t. Showing weakness in front of the pack would have been dangerous. But the second that gate closed behind me, I knew I had t

  • Taming The Alpha’s Curse   Chapter 22

Astrid’s PovMy heart hammered against my ribs like a caged bird desperate for escape. Aliyah’s words still echoed in my ears—“Take her to the dungeon. Make sure she’s inside. Lock it so she does not head out, and she cleans everywhere properly.” I couldn’t breathe. The mad wolf. *The mad wolf.* I had heard the stories since I came here, whispers around the pack fires about the beast locked away for years, a monster so feral that even the strongest warriors refused to go near his cell. No one visited. No one returned. And now they were sending *me* there.I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My throat had closed tight. Aliyah tilted her head, her lips curling with false sweetness. “Oh, you want to talk now? You’ve been keeping quiet since your little display of pride. I have a lovable heart, Astrid. I like giving everyone what they deserve. But you…” Her eyes narrowed. “Your pride disgusts me.”I looked at her, waiting, hoping—*praying*—she would change her mind. But she turned

Astrid’s PovDena’s grip on my arm was so tight it felt like she was trying to break it. She dragged me through the corridors like I was a sack of potatoes, walking so fast I kept stumbling to keep up. My heart was still racing from the conversation with Talon, and now this.“You can let go of my hand now,” I said, trying to pull away. “You’re hurting me.”She only squeezed harder and kept dragging me. When we finally reached the courtyard, she suddenly dropped my arm and spun around to face me.“Well, well,” she said with a nasty smile. “May I remind you that you still have chores to finish? But what were you doing with the Beta? I thought he was supposed to punish you. Or are you trying to seduce him too? Opening your legs for him like you do with everyone else?”I stared at her, feeling something hot rise in my chest. “You just open your mouth and say whatever comes out, don’t you? Can’t you ever keep quiet? Your mouth is always itching to say something mean.”Dena’s eyes widened.

  • Taming The Alpha’s Curse   Chapter 20

Astrid’s PovI kept asking myself the same question over and over as Talon led me through the corridors.*Why do I keep messing everything up?*Mara never made mistakes like this. The other servants seemed to know exactly how to stay invisible and safe. Even Dena, as mean as she was, rarely got punished. So what was wrong with me? Why did trouble follow me everywhere I went?Talon’s grip on my arm was firm but not painful as he guided me toward the private whipping room. It was a small, isolated chamber used for repeat offenders — the kind of place where people were punished quietly so the rest of the castle didn’t have to watch. My stomach twisted with fear. I already knew what was coming. I had seen others dragged here before. When we stepped inside, I moved automatically to the spot where people usually knelt or stood for their punishment. I closed my eyes tightly and waited for the first lash of the whip.It never came. After a few long seconds, I opened my eyes. Talon was just st

Astrid’s PovAliyah released my hair and threw me to the floor like I was nothing.I hit the cold stone hard, my palms scraping against the ground. Before I could even think about getting up, her foot came down on my hand. Not a kick. A slow, deliberate stomp. I bit down on my lip so hard I tasted

Astrid’s Pov“You.” Aliyah’s voice cut straight through me like a blade. “Stand up. Now.”I scrambled to my feet so fast I nearly knocked the chair over. “I’m so sorry, Luna. Astrid’s PovIt’s been four days.Four long, brutal days since they dragged me into this nightmare. Every hour feels like another twist of the knife, carving deeper into my soul. Astrid’s PovWith trembling lashes, I slowly cracked my eyes open, unsure and terrified. And there he was.He stood tall at the top of the stairs, his presence commanding absolute silence.
