Chapter 32

Tiana woke to aches all over her body with bone-deep soreness that came from muscles used in ways they hadn't been in years. Her head throbbed from the wine, her mouth felt dry, and her entire body protested when she tried to move.

But those discomforts were nothing compared to the realization that hit her when she opened her eyes.

This wasn't her room.

The walls were the wrong color. The furniture was different. The scent in the air was all wrong.

No.

No, no, no.

She pushed

Chapter 136 Tiana tried to move, to assess the damage, but her body wouldn't cooperate. Her legs, both of them now, refused to respond to her commands. She could feel them there, could feel the pain radiating from them, but they wouldn't move. The phone. She needed the phone. She craned her neck, searching, and saw it through tear-blurred vision, still upstairs where it had fallen, its screen glowing uselessly twenty feet above her. No. No, there had to be another way. Think. Think through the pain and the fear and think. Nikolai had broken every traffic law getting there. He'd called Tiana's number seventeen times during the drive but there was no answer. He'd tried the house phone but it just rang and rang. He'd pushed the Range Rover to speeds that made the engine scream, running red lights, taking corners so hard the tires left rubber on the asphalt. Sandy had called him back once to say she was stuck in traffic, wasn't going to make it in time, that he needed to get there

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 135

CHAPTER 135 The pain started slowly. Tiana was upstairs in her bedroom, sitting on the edge of her bed reviewing Sandy's partnership documents for the third time. Pascal had gone down easily tonight, tired from a full day of playing, and the house had settled into that peaceful evening quiet she'd come to appreciate during Nikolai's absence. The first cramp was low and dull, easy to dismiss as normal pregnancy discomfort. She shifted position, rubbed absently at her lower abdomen, and continued reading about liability clauses and operational structures. The second cramp made her gasp. It wasn't a whisper anymore. It was sharp and twisting, like something inside her was tearing loose. The papers scattered from her lap as both hands flew to her stomach, her breath catching in her throat. She waited, counting seconds, praying it would pass. It didn't pass. It built. Wave after wave of cramping seized her body, each one stronger than the last, until she was doubled over on the bed

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 134

CHAPTER 134 Nikolai decided to go to the penthouse rather than the residence when he returned from his trip. The penthouse felt different after days away. Nikolai dropped his luggage immediately he stepped out the elevator and loosened his tie, fatigue from the conference and cross-country flight settling into his bones. "You're back!" Indy appeared from the bedroom wearing one of his shirts, the hem hitting mid-thigh, her hair tousled in that calculated way that was supposed to look effortless. She crossed the living room with a model's grace. "I missed you," she murmured, sliding her arms around his neck and pressing against him. "You finally returned." Nikolai returned the embrace automatically, his body going through motions his mind had disconnected from. She smelled like expensive perfume and ambition, and when she tilted her face up for a kiss, he gave it to her. "How was your trip?" she asked, leading him toward the couch, her fingers working at the buttons of his shirt.

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 133

CHAPTER 133The morning of Nikolai's departure began with the organized chaos of last-minute packing. Tiana watched from her wheelchair in the hallway as he moved efficiently between rooms, checking his briefcase, confirming flight details on his phone, issuing instructions to Maryann about household matters.Pascal clung to his father's leg in the foyer, small face scrunched with concern. "How long will you be gone?""Four days, buddy." Nikolai crouched down to eye level, adjusting Pascal's shirt collar with careful fingers. "The tech conference in Seattle, remember? We talked about this.""But what if I need you?""Then you call me. Anytime, day or night." Nikolai pulled him into a hug, and Tiana saw something tighten in his expression. "But you're going to be fine. You're a brave boy.""I know." Pascal's voice was muffled against Nikolai's shoulder. "But I still don't want you to go."Nikolai pulled back, smoothed Pascal's hair. "I need you to do something very important for me whi

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 132

CHAPTER 132The café was nearly empty at this hour. Nikolai sat in the same corner booth as before, back to the wall, eyes on the entrance. His third black coffee had gone cold in front of him.The bell above the door chimed, and Locke McNeil entered with the same unremarkable efficiency that made him so effective. He scanned the café, then made his way to Nikolai's booth."Mr. Toriaga." McNeil slid into the seat opposite, setting a brown manila envelope on the table between them."You have something for me," Nikolai said."Everything you need is right there." McNeil tapped the envelope with one finger. "Background check on Jaden Cole, surveillance reports on Miss Selma, timeline analysis, relationship mapping. It's comprehensive."Nikolai didn't reach for it immediately. He studied McNeil's face instead, looking for tells, for signs of what the contents might reveal. The investigator's expression remained neutral, but something flickered in his eyes."Tell me," Nikolai said. "Before

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 131

CHAPTER 131 The doorbell rang at six-thirty, just as the evening shadows were stretching long across the living room. Pascal, who had been listlessly pushing his new dinosaur models around the coffee table, perked up immediately. "I'll get it!" he shouted, scrambling to his feet. "Pascal, wait for Maryann…" Tiana called, but he was already racing toward the entrance hall, his earlier disappointment temporarily forgotten in the excitement of a visitor. Tiana maneuvered her wheelchair to follow. She found Pascal launching himself at Sandy in the foyer, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Aunt Sandy! You came!" "Of course I came, birthday boy." Sandy hugged him back, her designer handbag sliding off her shoulder. "Did you think I'd miss celebrating with you?" "Everyone else forgot," Pascal said matter-of-factly, then brightened. "But Mummy and Daddy remembered! And we went to the museum, but then…" He stopped, some instinct telling him not to finish that sentence. Sandy's eyes f
