If anyone were to ask me how I would describe myself, I would say artistic. That was by far my favorite attribute. I recently just turned 20 and was slowly adjusting to adult life, especially so far from home. If anyone had told me I would get a good job in my dream city, I would have slapped them silly, but here I am, getting ready for my first day at work. I was excited, I could barely contain my joy, mainly because the salary would be phenomenal, and I would be able to save up enough money to do something I want with my life. I turn to see the photo of my parents and me on my bedroom dresser. The picture was taken when I was 10 years old; life was so much easier then. My dad passed away when I was 11, and my mum was diagnosed with cancer soon after. We had to reach out to different organizations for help, and thankfully, they were able to foot the bill. I don't know what we would have done if they hadn't helped us. Buzz…Buzz…Buzz.
The noise snapped me out of thought.
''Hello!" My best friend shouted over the phone.
"Hey girl, no need to shout, I have perfectly good hearing," I laughed.
Katie had been my best friend since we were both in diapers. Our moms were best friends, which only makes it acceptable that she and I are. She was a lot to handle, but I loved her regardless.
"You weren't about to go to work on your first day without calling me, where you?' she asked, and I could swear I could feel her smile through the phone.
"Of course I wasn't, I was just about to call you before your call came in." I didn't like lying to Katie, but to save myself from her outburst, sometimes it was necessary.
"Hmmm…. Okay. I'll try to believe you. Anyway, are you nervous? Or excited? Or both? Do you need me to go with you? Hold your hand? Drive you there?" She drilled me with questions.
"Katie, slow down. You haven't even let me answer one question yet, "I said, laughing.
"Oh, sorry, love, I just want you to know you're amazing, smart, sexy, beautiful, and so much more, and I'm so proud of you for landing this job. Remember I'm always here for you," she said, trying to catch her breath.
"Thank you, Katie. I love you too. And yes, I am nervous, but I'm more excited, though. I really want this to work, and I really hope it does."
"You'll be fine, girl, trust me, and who knows, maybe you'll find someone special and fall…"
"Girl, please, I don't have time for love. I have dreams to chase. I have to go, or else I'll be late for my first day. Bye-bye. I'll call you as soon as I get back home."
"Byeeeeee"
I quickly get dressed, almost tripping over my bag, which I left on the floor. My apartment wasn't the neatest; my bra was on the couch, socks by the door, dirty dishes in the sink, and half of my clothes lay almost artistically on the floor of my bedroom.
In my defense, I had only just moved here a few weeks ago, got the job last week, and started prepping a few days ago. No human being could do all that and have a neat apartment.
"I'll spring clean when I get back," I say out loud, knowing fully well I won't. If it's any consolation, it's the middle of November, and spring cleaning is overrated.
Just before leaving the apartment, I take a slow, long look at myself in the full-body mirror hanging on the wall in my bedroom next to the dresser. "Damn girl, you look too good," I say to myself, giggling. Being a curvy girl was such a blessing. The white corset top I was wearing hugged my body perfectly, showing off my small waist and above-average boobs. The tight black corporate skirt that was just below my knee did justice to my hips and my round backside. My hair was in a messy high bun, leaving all the attention to my neck, where a single gold necklace shone beautifully in the morning sun. I added a gold bracelet and a gold ring to complement my outfit and paired them with short heels for convenience. I push up my glasses from the crook of my nose; they always fell a little when I spoke. "Sexy and confident yet cute and corporate, perfect."
The commute was about 25minutes from my apartment. My new job building was located in the busiest part of town, which meant noisy cars, over-crowded streets, and rich pricks who felt better than everyone else. "Well, it's too late to turn back now," I say as I walk to the entrance. Just as I am about to push the door open, someone grabs my arm and pushes me to the side. I'm thrown off balance, harshly crashing to the ground. "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!" My voice is louder than I anticipated.
"This entrance is for me and me alone," A deep, throaty voice says, coming from a tall figure with green hooded eyes staring down at me in amusement.
Jamey“The bet is off, I want her fired, I want her gone, in fact, I want her arrested for assault and battery,” I said, my hands shaking. My jaw clenched and unclenched on its own. I was fuming, visibly turning red.To make things worse, my stupid best friend is laughing his ass off“I love that girl. She actually slapped you right across your face, bro. I wish I were there. Why were you even snooping around her desk anyway?” He was laughing so hard he started to tear up“I don’t see what is so fucking funny, Omar. This is my building and technically my office as well. I just gave her a little space. I can choose to snoop wherever and whenever I want. And it's not even snooping if you own everything. The bet is off. I want nothing to do with her. She’s psychotic.” I truly believed she had to be Psychotic.“But you have to commend her bravery.. Which other woman do you know would run into a dark office with her eyes closed to catch an intruder? Even? Even I wouldn’t do that. She’s se
MeadowRING RINGThe sound tore through my dreams. I was still on the couch in the living room, my bowl was on the coffee table next to me, and the TV had probably turned off on its own. I reach for my phone next to the bowl and check who could be calling at this hour. It was 3 AM."Hello," I say in a cranky voice."Hi baby, I'm sorry to wake you. I just really needed to hear your voice, my love.""Mum? Why are you calling so late? Is everything okay? Was the nurse rude to you again? Should I come over in the morning?" I stop trying to catch my breath"Slow down, baby, I'm fine. I just really missed you and wanted to hear your voice. I also wanted to know if that boss of yours was still being so mean to you," She said with her frail voice."Are you sure, Mum? Why can't you sleep?" I asked worried"The doctors placed me on a new medication, and it comes with side effects such as insomnia. They asked if I wanted sleeping pills as well, but I refused; I have enough drugs going through me
Jamey"Hey, dude, why do you hate her so much? She's sexy and pretty, and she knows her job... what more could you want in a secretary?"My eyes actually roll on their own."Is that all that matters to you? No wonder you have such low standards. And it doesn't matter anyway, I'm going to fire her next week," I say, keeping my eyes on the road."WHAT?! You can't fire her, she's the best secretary you have ever had, plus, she just started. It's only been two weeks. Just admit it, you want her gone because you find her attractive, and you hate the fact that she's smart and confident, and she's the only woman who has been allowed to be close to you and not throw herself at you. She matches your stubborn nature. It's sexy," Omar's voice was beginning to irritate me for the 100th time today."I don't find her attractive, but she is stubborn, crazy, and daft. If I did want someone, I would want someone calm, quiet, and submissive." My mind goes to Debby. We never dated, we never even slept t
MeadowAfter my first day, time seemed to fly. Jamey gave me a more challenging task, but I didn't give up. I did every single one within the time frame given. I couldn't back down from this man. The irritated look on his face whenever I completed them was very rewarding. It has been two weeks since I started working at Salvador Inc., and honestly, I really like the environment. It was very healthy and progressive despite the power-hungry tyrant in charge. RING..RING..."Hello, this is Mr. Salvador's secretary. How can I…""I don't care who you are, I want to speak to Jamey now. Tell him to pick up my call," a high-pitched voice interrupts me."Mr. Salvador is busy right now, but I can take a message. Who is this?" I ask, genuinely interested in knowing."Tell him Debby called and he should call me back soon. I'm his fiancée," She seemed very proud saying the statement. Now, I haven't known Jamey for very long, but he doesn't look like the type of man who likes or goes into relationsh
Meadow"Did you just say Jamey Salvador? As in my boss... Jamey Salvador? I ask the nice guy who helped me up."Yup…As in your boss... Jamey Salvador. Are you new here?""Yes, I am. I'm supposed to be his new secretary," I said in disbelief"Oh my god!" The nice guy burst out laughing so hard that tears filled his eyes. I just stand there staring at him in disbelief. Was I already fired before I even started? Did I just lose my dream job? Was my boss really that much of an asshole? I'm pulled out of my train of thought by a hand shaking my shoulder lightly."What's your name, beautiful?" the nice man asks"I'm Meadow white," I say, still in shock"Nice to meet you, Meadow white. I'm Omar Agee, Jamey's best friend and president of Salvador Inc. Welcome to the Company, let me show you around.""I still have my job? I asked in all seriousness, but he laughed."You're really funny, do you know that? Let's go, you don't want to add more diesel to the fire, do you?I follow right behind him
JameyI hate Mondays, I hate work, I hate people, I hate noise, in short, I hate everything except money, power, and respect, maybe a good smoke once in a while, but that was very rare. I'm woken up by an annoying sound coming from somewhere below me. "What in the world… is too early for this shit?" I mutter, slowly getting out of bed. I clench my jaw as I try to find the source of my annoyance. I scan through my third floor…Nothing, my second floor… Nothing, my first floor nothing. As I'm waiting for the elevator to open on the ground floor, my hands are already visibly shaking, my jaw clenched tighter, and I can hear the blood rushing to my head. DING... the doors open. Like prey that knows it's about to be pounced on, I see my idiotic best friend take to his heels when he's eye lock with mine. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE, OMAR! IT'S 5 AM!!!!" I yell at the top of my voice"Calm down, buddy, I was just hungry and came to make a protein shake with your blender, it's not
