Chapter 15

Meryn

A jolt of fear shoots through me as I open my eyes. I’m wearing nothing except a white dress that clings to my skin like a second skin. I can’t remember ever owning something like this, which only serves to heighten the feelings of unease and confusion coursing through me.

Where am I?

I look around. There is a pathway leading into the forest ahead of me, and the grass feels cold underneath my naked feet as I stride forward without a purpose. An owl is hooting from somewhere, and I lift my chin, staring at the trees as they sway back and forth in an eerie fashion.

I have an unsettling feeling that this might be a dream. But this isn’t like any other dream I’ve ever had before—I’m aware of the fact that I’m dreaming, and it’s lucid.

As I survey my surroundings, uncertainty sparks. Should I continue following the pathway?
