Classes would be a breeze, the physical challenge would be beyond worth the pain for the results, I have my pack mates and enough potential soulmates to go around. Not that I particularly believe in that shit, but some naive beta or sappy alpha would fall for that line easy. This was like a dream come true. And yet… I couldn’t shake the feeling caught in my chest, that tightened my neck and made my hands curl. Something was… different. Like an unspoken secret wafting through the air, a lingering sense lurking in a corner. I was oddly on edge, but couldn’t place why. I’ll have to wrack it up to nerves, though there was nothing to be nervous about. Then again I’m still waiting on my roommate, maybe that was it… There was nothing worse than the unexpected, looking at the bulletin board to see no name but rather an undetermined slot. Rhys rapped his fist gently against the firm mattress, “Not terrible. Not as snazzy as my east wing dorm, but it’ll work.” I rolled my eyes at him, “Don’t rub it in my face.” I chucked a pillow at him, which he swiftly batted away. It was a shame we wouldn’t room together, though I wouldn’t admit it aloud I’d secretly hoped I’d be beside someone I trusted for the rest of the year. And seeing a blank name next to mine on the bulletin annoying, likely some no show that couldn’t handle the heat before they walked through the gates. Figures. But as smile came to my face, as I couldn’t help but think my family name might have knocked them off the board. Alderwyn carried massive weight to it; strong warriors, competitive traditions, social status and family pride. Who could compete with that? I was better off with someone that could handle the weight. Rhys perked up at the door, the sound of a trudging step closing in on my doorway. A scent overcame me, something dirty and wild… Brawnclove. A scoff came from behind me. “Thought it smelt a little sterile in here.” I felt my jaw clench, the unnecessary jab confirming my suspicions. “Kane…” I drawled, “I didn’t think they still let mutts in here.” I turned to face him, the brutish and ragged son of the Brawnclove tribe, soon to be tribe leader. A waste of space, in my opinion. He was rugged and unpolished, angry and unsightly. Everything my tribe had been taught to loathe and avoid. He smirked, “Still more wolf than you are. Tell me, pretty boy, that Alderwyn name still wasn’t good enough to get you in a penthouse?” Rhys sat up from the bed, “Keep running your mouth and I’ll show you the basement, berserkr.” Kane’s head whipped at the insult, “Yeah I’d bet you’d like to get me in a dark room, wouldn’t you Rhys?” Rhys bared his teeth; a deep growl emanating from his chest. Kane matched it without hesitation; his earthly scent combating with Rhys’ fresh and natural one. We’d started to attract eyes from the hallways, I squared my shoulders and turned back to Kane. “Just fuck off—would you? You’re not welcome here.” Kane turned to me, Rhys forgotten in the presence of a different challenge. He dropped the bags on his shoulder to the ground. “Don’t think so—“ he started, taking a step in the door, “This is my room.” I tried to stop my eyes from growing wide, biting the inside of my cheek. “Like fuck it is,” Rhys chided, lifting himself from the bed. He stepped to Kane’s figure, his eyes boring into the side of his head. “Get out. Now.” Kane turned, jaw set and stare deadly. “Why,” Kane chided, “you gonna make me?” Rhys and I shared a glance. Yeah; that’s exactly what we were going to do.It was everything I’d ever dreamed of. Wrought iron gates encompassing the grand and ancient campus; September gracing the grounds with warmth, a gentle breeze and touches of orange in the fading leaves. In inhaled the crisp autumn air. Finally. I was here. My hand clutching the luggage at my side, my other wrapped around the cold metal of my necklace. My mother’s voice echoed in my head “Under no circumstances will you take it off.” I swallowed at the memory. The delicately-wound silver choker newly placed around my neck, her hands clasped over my shoulders, a desperation in her eyes I’d seen seldom times in my life. “I beg you, Aspen. I can’t protect you when you aren’t here. Be smart, be sharp, and most importantly—be careful.” A ran over the grooves of the wire and chain, reminding myself to breathe. A bustle of students and their boisterous laughter interrupted my thoughts. People…. so many people. I watched as they clambered through the gates; shoving a
My lip dropped in surprised awe. That was… unexpected. Watching as she walked away without a glance, no hesitation in her step. I had lied to her—it wasn’t an accident. Truthfully I can’t recall a time that I’d acted that way. Stepping out of the car, eyeing the familiar campus—I had let myself get enveloped by the sense of normalcy. In a fleeting instance I craved variety; then I’d seen something new to me. Her. Other students I’d recognized from my own pack or alliance meetings, mating celebrations and receptions, the elitist world we lived in didn’t leave many families to be strangers to mine. But she was unfamiliar. Standing alone in front of the gates, as if one of the most magnificent things she’d ever seen. The autumn wind pulling back at her burgundy locks—reminding me of a rich glass of wine. She mumbled to herself softly, a plump bottom lip that rose and fell as she reassured herself… or what I could only assume as self reassurance. She was new in a pl
Though the hall was absolutely stunning, I eagerly wished to escape. It was just so packed. So many people, so many noises—so much. More than I’d ever experienced. Our pack was quiet; a small knit community in the wilderness. Of royalty descendant, and holding great rapport with the mages of our nation, our colony still held great sway and power. Enough to get me into the academy, but not too much that I couldn’t slip by unnoticed. In fact, in some circles, we were notorious after all.I felt dizzy at the thought of running into a Ravenclove… one of many less-than-favorable relationships to the Idlewyld tribe. My foot tapped impatiently against the tile, sweaty bodies occasionally bumping into me as I waited to reach the bulletin board. There I’d find my dorm posting; hopefully with a beta roommate, ideally alone. Another shout came, another laugh, another squeal as two friends found each other. I closed my eyes in attempt to drown out the echoing voices. I felt
Jedediah paced the floor, my mother sat in her chair. She traced his pace with a calculated eye. Sure that he had greater worry than she, but unsure as to his reaction. The Alpha leader’s daughter; both a secondary gender of benefit and hindrance. And alpha son would have been preferable; but an alpha daughter would do. One that could lead hunts, hold her own in debates. But an omega daughter…A nightmare for the tribe. The only hope for survival would be to marry her off; to pray that she could breed the next generation and create a stronger Idlewyld pack. But my mother wouldn’t have it. “Freya, I’d rather not beg,” the beta Jedidiah stated, “But we both know that this is the only option.” My mother stared blankly to the horizon, finding that dawn faded so quickly in the arrival of fall. Long gone were long endured sunsets of pink and orange.A deep blue beckoned after the fleeting sun, soon black would fall over the commune. Darkened, singed leaves left by the c
