Chapter 1

Author: Crystal K
For two years, I did everything thing for my fated mate, Alpha Fabian. One hundred dangerous tasks, just to make him happy. But he only ever loved my sister, Gloria.

My 100th task for him?

Venturing into the Valley of Shadows to steal a rare herb from a hostile pack.

This time, I almost didn't make it back.

"You stupid girl! You almost died!"

A sharp, female voice pierced my ears.

I slowly opened my eyes. The white ceiling of a tent swam into view.

A splitting pain shot through my head.

My memories were a blur, a fog.

"For a mission? You went into the Valley of Shadows alone for that fool!" a man's angry roar followed.

Valley of Shadows? Mission?

I tried to remember, but all I got were broken pieces.

The backlash from a pack ward lit up the sky, then everything went black.

"I…"

"Enough!" The woman cut me off, her eyes filled with disappointment. "Look at you. What a wreck you've made of yourself, just to get Fabian's attention. I think the Moon Goddess got it wrong with this whole fated mate thing!"

Fabian.

The name made my heart race, but I couldn't picture his face.

"Gloria was worried sick about you all night," she went on, her tone suddenly softening. "She's already so fragile, and you've stressed her into a wreck."

I watched her expression shift.

Disgust when she looked at me. Pure love when she talked about Gloria.

"Who are you? Who's Gloria?" I asked, my voice weak.

The man and woman exchanged a look.

"Oh, so now you have amnesia?" the man sneered. "Convenient."

"She's our adopted daughter," he continued. "A thousand times better than you ever were."

Adopted? Then what about me?

"Am I your real daughter?"

"So what if you are?" my mother snapped. "Are you blaming us now? You were gone for fifteen years. We thought you were dead. Gloria was the one who got us through those painful years. Even now that you're back, a she-wolf raised as a rogue… You're no Beta warrior. And you'll never be fit to be this pack's Luna."

Gone for fifteen years.

So I was their daughter. But clearly, blood meant nothing.

"The healer said you might have some memory loss, but you look fine to me," my father said, standing up. "Now that you're awake, cut the sympathy act. Gloria's coming-of-age ceremony is tomorrow. Be there. The Alpha has been planning it for months."

After they left, I lay alone in bed.

A wave of being completely unloved washed over me. It was a chilling reminder: I had to figure out who I really was.

I struggled to sit up and found a small, encrypted communicator and a leather-bound journal tucked inside my clothes.

On the cover, in my own handwriting, were the words: "For Fabian - My 100 Things."

My hand trembled as I cracked open the cover.

"Task #1: Fabian mentioned he likes purple wind-bells. I searched the entire forest to find them. He tossed them on the table without a second glance."

My heart began to pound.

"Task #15: Fabian wanted the Blaze-fire pack's secret combat manual. I snuck into their sacred grounds and stole it. I was almost caught, got my arm sliced by a silver bullet. When he took it, all he said was, 'It's useful enough.'"

Task #20, Task #30, Task #50…

Every page was a testament to my pathetic devotion and his icy cruelty.

"Task #67: I spent three months learning to brew his favorite ancient mead. When I brought it to him, he was talking to Gloria. He didn't even look up. 'Just leave it on the table,' he said."

Tears blurred my vision.

"Task #78: Fabian's power went wild. He was in agony all night. I stayed by his side, feeding him my energy to calm him. When dawn broke, his first words were, 'Where's Gloria? Did I wake her?'"

My hand clenched the journal, my knuckles turning white.

Every word was a knife, cutting into my amnesiac but still-aching heart.

"Task #100: It's Gloria's birthday. Fabian asked me to negotiate with the hostile pack in the Valley of Shadows for a rare herb for her. I know it's dangerous, but if it makes him happy…"

I slammed the journal shut.

My tears blurred the words, but the pain was crystal clear.

I didn't remember doing any of it, but reading the words, I could feel that girl's desperate love.

How stupid she was.

Risking her life just for a moment of kindness from a man who didn't love her.

I wiped my tears. I flipped to a blank page and wrote my final entry.

"Task #101: Leave him. Reclaim myself."

I wiped my eyes, picked up the cold communicator, and pressed the button to call the pack Elder.

"Elder, I'm requesting the Bond-Severing Ritual. I am rejecting my fated mate."

"Are you certain, child?" the Elder's voice came through, thick with shock. "Once the ritual begins, it can never be undone."

"I'm certain," my voice was unnervingly calm.

The line went silent for a moment before the Elder's voice returned, grave. "Child, the ritual requires the Moon Goddess’s Tear. The sacred artifact is locked in the Alpha's safe. Fabian's safe. You must get it before the full moon in three days, or the ritual cannot proceed."

Hazel's POVAs I settled into Rhys's sports car, I finally let out a breath I didn't know I was holding."That was a masterful performance," Rhys said, the corner of his mouth twitching as he pulled away from the curb. "As your co-star, I believe I'm owed a celebratory drink. Or three."I couldn't help but laugh. "What kind of reward do you want?""Dinner," he said seriously. "A proper dinner with me.""That's it?""I have other requests, but dinner first."He took me to the most exclusive French restaurant in the city. The candlelight flickered, the wine was rich and fragrant, and the entire atmosphere was so romantic it made my heart race."Is today a special occasion?" I asked."It's my birthday," he said, pouring two glasses of wine. "Thirty-one.""Your birthday? Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I felt a little flustered. "I didn't get you a gift…""I don't need a gift," he said, his gaze warm. "You being here is the best gift I could ask for.""You'll make me blush.""Then blush,"

I returned to the pack a ghost. A dead man walking. But I had one final duty to perform.I summoned the entire pack. Gloria would face a public trial at the tribunal. On the trial stage, a massive enchanted crystal flared to life, projecting the evidence for all to see: Gloria’s transaction records with the Shadowmancer Coven, every venomous message she had sent to Hazel, and the proof of every treacherous plot she had orchestrated. The pack's shock morphed into a collective roar of fury."Traitor!""Vicious snake!""To think we cherished such a viper in our midst!"Gloria’s parents, my pack’s most respected Beta officers, were ashen-faced. Her mother let out a piercing shriek and fainted the moment she saw the evidence. Her father aged twenty years in an instant. He crumpled to the ground, his hollow eyes fixed on the girl he had raised, muttering, "What have we done... Oh, by the Goddess, what have we done..."The truth finally crashed down on them. They had shoved their own flesh

Fabian's POVBy the time the private jet landed, it was dusk the next day.I didn't rest. I went straight to the address my Beta had given me.The central business district. A forty-story skyscraper."Sterling Covenant Strategic Firm, 40th Floor."I stared at the name on the building directory, my heart hammering in my chest. She was really here. Not only was she alive, but she had built her own power base."Sir, can I help you?" the receptionist asked politely."I'm here to see Hazel Sterling.""Do you have an appointment?""No, but I'm her…" I paused. "I'm her friend."Friend?I didn't even have the right to be her friend anymore."I'm sorry, sir, but Ms. Sterling isn't in the office right now," the receptionist said. "She just stepped out.""When will she be back?""I'm… not sure."I had no choice but to wait by the entrance. One hour. Two hours. Three hours.Night fell, and the city lights came on.Just when I thought I wouldn't see her today, a black sedan pulled up to the buildin

Hazel's POVThe summit ended close to midnight. As Rhys and I stepped out of the hotel, the cool night air of the city greeted us."How was tonight?" he asked."It exceeded all my expectations," I said sincerely. "Thank you for the opportunity.""You earned it yourself," he said, opening the car door. "You left quite an impression on everyone."It was true. I had received at least five business cards and three collaboration proposals tonight.Prince Aden had even scheduled a meeting with me for next week."By the way, about our contract," Rhys said suddenly. "I'm ready to sign."I was taken aback. "So soon?""I've seen what I needed to see," he smiled. "Your professional capabilities are beyond question."The car moved through the dark streets, the neon lights casting fleeting shadows across the windows."I'll have my lawyers send over the contract tomorrow," he said as he drove. "I have another proposal," he said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate timber. "A more... permanent one.

Hazel's POVThe next morning, Lydia burst into my office."Hazel! I did some research on the Blackwood family last night," she said, waving a stack of papers. "This Rhys Blackwood is a living legend in the supernatural world!""And most importantly," Lydia lowered her voice, " Rhys was known for never working with new, small firms. The fact that he's even 'considering' us means you must have been incredible last night!""You think we have a shot?""Of course we do!" she said excitedly. "You have to follow up immediately."Just as she said that, my communicator rang.It was an unknown number."Sterling Covenant Strategic Firm, this is Hazel.""Good morning, Hazel," Rhys's voice came through the line. "I hope I'm not disturbing you."Lydia's ears perked up, her eyes wide with excitement."Not at all. I have a moment.""I'd like to invite you to an event," he said. "There's a summit tonight that I think you might find interesting.""What kind of summit?""The Global Supernatural Leaders'

Hazel's POV"Fate really is a funny thing," Rhys said with a smile, pulling out a chair for me. "The woman who spilled coffee on me at the airport turns out to be the strategist I've been looking for.""Maybe it was meant to be," I said, sitting down gracefully. "But for now, perhaps we should talk business.""No rush," he said, pouring two glasses of red wine. "Let's eat first. I'd like to get to know my business partner better."The dinner was exquisite—pan-seared duck breast, truffle pasta, and an array of fine side dishes.Just as I was about to take a bite of the pasta, Rhys suddenly said, "Wait. This has rosemary in it."I paused. "What's wrong?""You don't like rosemary, do you?" he said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "I'll have them remake it for you."I stared at him, stunned. How did he know I didn't like rosemary? We'd only met once, and it was a complete accident."How did you know that?""At the airport, you specifically asked for no rosemary syrup in
