Marianna

“I think the couch looks fine right there,” Mom says, kicking an empty moving box into a growing pile of dinged up cardboard. “But an armchair would be nice, don’t you think?”

“One of those big, fluffy monstrosities?” I laugh, arranging framed photos on the mantle, my fingers gliding over an image of me, Skye, and my mom a few months after my daughter was born.

“I’d love something cozy to sit in while you’re at work and I’m watching Skye do her homework. I’ll start the hunt for one. I was just talking to our neighbor about a flea market held during the upcoming mating festival. I bet I’ll find something there.” She giggles, but her voice fades when she turns back into the kitchen to continue unpacking.

Skye is asleep upstairs, long tucked in for the night. Moonlight beams through the bare windows. I haven’t put up the curtains yet. It’s a beautiful, warm night with a soft, only slightly chilly breeze coming off the mountains. The moonlight calls to me, beckoning.

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Space to Breathe

BlakeIt’s not a small gathering of people like Maeve said it would be. I should have known that this party would be… a writhing mess of voices and lifted conversation bouncing from wall to wall in the formal ballroom, a space the size of a small city that puts the grand hall in the castle of Crescent Falls to shame. It’s well past 8:00. I sip a second glass of scotch, lingering along the far wall. Maeve invited her parents and several friends from Veiled Valley. Patton has a large group of friends in Moonrise, which surprises me even though I can’t say I know the man very well at all yet. And, on top of a few high-ranking wolves and their partners, their mates, a large majority of the staff is here to celebrate one of their own–Jane–everyone dressed immaculately and enjoying the castle as guests instead of the people who keep it running like a well-oiled machine. The most surprising guest is Uncle Ryan. I watch him move through the crowd toward my perch along the wall, nodding and

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Just Walk Away

BlakeA maid sets a breakfast tray on the table in the corner of my office before bowing her head and scurrying out. Steam wafts from a carafe while the scent of coffee fills the room, and I rise, tucking my phone between my cheek and shoulder. “It’s just something I’m considering, Liam.”My brother sighs under his breath, his voice slightly staticky when the connection buffers. “You’re serious? Why would you walk away from–”“I wouldn’t be walking away from anything.” I pour myself a cup of coffee, ignoring the breakfast spread I rarely ever touch. I normally don’t eat until midday, but the kitchen begs to differ and keeps sending it anyway. “You’d be abdicating, Blake. I mean, have you seriously thought this through?”“That's why I’m telling you about it. I have, thoroughly.”“Do Mom and Dad know?”“I haven’t broached the subject yet, but I’m sure they assume something is going on based on how often I’m in Eastonia.”“You’re there full time,” he says, echoing a silent sentiment. O

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Seven Years

MariannaI don’t realize I’m gripping Blake’s hand until his fingers loosen and fall away from mine. I tuck my hands behind my back, taking a deep breath to rein myself in while he stuffs his hands in his pockets–a very uncharacteristic motion that I notice, like he’s nervous. But of course he is. He hasn’t seen Skye since the day she was born, and I feel… awful about that now that I can see his face as he looks at her, seven years later, cautiously taking her in. And Skye is looking right at him. She slides off the chair, her hands resting at her sides. She chose her outfit today. Denim overalls, a black shirt, her hair loose and falling down her back. The only pop of color she wanted was her shoes, which were a birthday present from her grammy in hopes Skye would start liking color again. Skye inspects Blake from head to toe while I hold my breath for both of them. I know Blake. I used to, at least. Maybe he’s changed in the seven years we’ve been apart, but what hasn’t is that

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Not This One

BlakeStained glass inlaid with millions of moonstones filters silver hued light across marble tiles as my footsteps carry through the cavernous network of hallways in the temple. It’s a busy day here in the center of the spiritual mecca that both priestesses of the Goddess and the Mystics call home. Women in silver robes walk in pairs, clutching books, talking in quiet tones. Some wear masks of crystal while others, normally much younger women in training as acolytes, wear veils of white fabric to cover their faces. The priestesses are more laid back, often wearing plain clothes within the temple, sometimes covering their hair with veils, but otherwise they’re a great contrast to the white and silver of ordained Mystics and their younger counterparts, the acolytes, who have yet to don their crystal masks. Everyone, however, stops to bow and curtsy as I walk down the long, wide hallway with a cathedral ceiling that makes even the softest whisper boom. My noise canceling headphones

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Welcome Home

Marianna“I think she likes it,” Mom says over my shoulder as we watch Skye scurry from room to room in the townhouse I found for rent only a mile from the exterior wall of the castle. Cream-colored plaster walls and narrow, but brightly lit, hallways connect three bedrooms upstairs. Sunlight dances across dark wood floors, dust motes hanging in suspension. It smells like flowers. Wisteria and bougainvillea are already trying to bloom in the snug front garden lined with a pale stone wall, where the bright green spring grass has been freshly mowed in time for our arrival. It’s a quiet street based on what the realtor told me. Cars aren’t allowed, and there’s a village square just a block away with a grocery store, bakery, and a park. Everything we’d need is within reach, secured by a gate separating us from the rest of Moonrise, which is apparently one of the safest cities in the Allied Kingdoms and great for young families.Skye peeks her head out of one of the bedrooms and stares at
