JACQUELINE

The wind had picked up a little on my way to Blair’s house. A couple of leaves blew across the pavement. I parked at the side of the street, tires crunching over loose gravel. My phone was on the seat next to me, still lit with Blair’s earlier text telling me to come straight in.

I got out and shut the car door. The air smelled faintly of damp soil. Blair’s porch light was on, even though it wasn’t dark yet. I went up the steps and knocked twice before letting myself in.

The hallway was quiet except for a TV playing in the living room. Blair’s sneakers were by the mat, one tipped over with the laces trailing. I straightened them without thinking and followed the sound of her voice toward the living room.

She appeared from the corner with a grin, her hair loosely tied back and a faint smudge of eyeliner under one eye.

“Finally,” she said, taking my wrist before I could even take off my jacket.

We went to her room, the door already open. Amy was on the bed, sitting cross-legg

EZRAI rose from the bed before she appeared, the movement almost instinctive. My hands pressed against my knees for a moment as I stood, my body leaning forward slightly, wanting her to arrive faster. The door opened. She stepped inside, and my chest loosened at the sight of her.She carried a plate of steaming meat in her hands. Her smile was the next thing I noticed—bright, warm, and steady.I did not wait for her to cross the threshold. I closed the space between us in three long strides. Her grin widened when she saw me moving toward her. I slid the plate from her hands before she could speak, careful not to spill the juices that pooled at the center. The heat of the ceramic pressed into my palms, but I did not let it go. I set it down on the small table beside the wall, my eyes never leaving hers. Then I kissed her.It came as no surprise to me that I just could not have enough of her. I felt her breath mix with mine. She tasted faintly of the air outside the room, cool and cle

JACQUELINEBy the time I reached the front steps, my throat felt scraped raw from breathing too hard. The door creaked when I pulled it open. Mom was on the couch, her elbows on her knees, wrinkling her hands over and over. The TV was on but muted. A news anchor’s mouth moved silently on the screen. I could tell Mom had put it on as a distraction.“Did you find her?” Her voice came the second she saw me. She didn’t even look hopeful when she asked, maybe because her eyes had dropped to my empty hands.I shook my head. “No.”The word was small but heavy, like a stone in my mouth. My heart gave one of those slow, mean twists, the kind that makes it hard to stand up straight.Mom nodded, but it was the kind of nod people do when they’re not agreeing with you, just acknowledging that they heard.I crossed the living room. The couch’s fabric made a faint brushing sound against my jeans when I sat beside her. Her hands were still restless, so I caught one and held it, giving her the most co

JACQUELINEI had never thought I would be the one to panic over a cat. Not in this lifetime. But there I was, standing in the middle of the living room with my heart in my throat, scanning every corner of the place for a patch of bright orange fur that wasn’t there.“She’s not under the couch,” I had said, even though I had bent down and looked twice.“I checked there already,” Mom had answered quickly, her voice tight. She had abandoned the plates she had been washing in the kitchen sink. The water was still running, and I could hear it drumming into the metal basin. She had already stepped out the door to knock on the neighbor’s.The sound of her knuckles hitting their doors was sharp and too fast, like she didn’t have time to be polite about it. “Have you seen an orange cat? Small, short-haired?” I heard her asking Mr. Douglas, the old man who constantly mowed his lawn like it was a competition he was hoping to win someday. What if the cat had wandered out onto the road and was cru

JACQUELINE I cut a piece of chicken and bit delightfully into it. Mom had come home early to prepare a delicious lunch of asparagus and chicken. It was the tastiest meal I’d had in a while.I looked towards Mom, who was eating slowly, and said,“This is so delicious; I’m afraid to ask how much it cost to make this.”She smiled faintly, her fork hovering over the plate. “Less than you think. Besides, I wanted us to eat together tonight.”The smell of roasted garlic and lemon was still clinging to the air. The kitchen light above the table made the chicken skin glisten. My glass of water was half-empty, a little condensation ring forming under it. I shifted my foot against the leg of my chair and felt the rough patch on the wood where the varnish had peeled.Mom’s eyes lifted from her plate. “So… How was your day?”My fork paused halfway to my mouth as I thought about everything that happened earlier in the day. I thought about the horrible trance in the hospital and the nurse who had

EZRA I kept her face between my palms, my thumbs brushing her cheeks as though I could memorize every curve of her skin through touch alone. The kiss deepened without thought, her breath mingling with mine, warm and unhurried. She made a small sound against my mouth, something like a laugh caught in her throat, before she leaned back just enough for her lips to part from mine.“I’m hungry,” she said, eyes glinting with that mischievous softness I had missed for far too long. “If you’re not, I’m ready to eat.”Her words curled through me like the flicker of a flame. I didn’t let her go right away. Instead, I pulled her closer for two, maybe three more kisses, slower this time, just to feel the shape of her mouth and the faint tremor in her breath when she smiled into them.“I am not finished with you,” I murmured, but my grip loosened. She gave me a look that said she knew exactly what I meant and exactly how much I meant it. Then she slipped from my hands and turned toward the door,
