Mag-log inThe eastern wing of the Moon Palace remained as silent as ever. Unlike the grand halls where nobles gathered and servants hurried from one task to another, this part of the palace felt almost untouched by the rest of the kingdom. Thick stone walls muffled every sound from outside, leaving only the occasional crackle of firewood burning inside the enormous fireplace that dominated the Alpha King's private study.
Ryker Ashthorn stood before the tall windows with his hands clasped behind his back.
Beyond the glass, the palace gardens stretched endlessly beneath the morning sun. Servants moved about their duties, guards changed shifts with practiced precision, and somewhere in the distance, the palace bell announced the beginning of another day.
His expression remained unreadable.
A knock sounded.
"Enter." The heavy door opened. A young man with ash-brown hair stepped inside, dressed in the black military uniform of the royal guard. Unlike everyone else in the palace, he walked toward the Alpha King without visible fear, stopping only after reaching the center of the room.
"Your Majesty." Ryker acknowledged him with a slight glance.
"Cassian." Cassian had served beside him for nearly fifteen years.
He was more than the commander of the royal guards. He was the only person in the kingdom permitted to question him without immediately fearing punishment.
"The Hall of Oaths has been prepared," Cassian reported. "The Queen Mother is already there." Ryker gave a single nod.
Neither of them spoke again for several moments. Cassian knew that silence well.
The Alpha King had never been a man who filled empty moments with unnecessary conversation.
Still, there was one question he had carried since yesterday.
He wasn't the only one. The entire palace was asking it. Even the Queen Mother herself had looked bewildered. Cassian finally exhaled.
"May I ask something?" Ryker didn't turn from the window.
"You already are." A faint smile tugged at the corner of Cassian's mouth.
"I suppose I am." He folded his hands behind his back.
"Why her?" The room fell silent once again.
Outside, a flock of white birds lifted into the sky above the gardens before disappearing beyond the palace walls. Ryker watched them without answering.
Cassian continued carefully.
"You've rejected princesses."
"Daughters of Alphas."
"Noblewomen from the oldest bloodlines in the kingdom." He paused.
"Yesterday..."
"...you walked past every one of them." His eyes narrowed slightly.
"And then you stopped in front of a commoner.
"Still, no answer. Cassian wasn't offended. He had expected silence.
Then Ryker finally spoke.
"Did you watch them?" Cassian frowned.
"The candidates?"
"Yes." he replied.
"I did."
"What did you see?" Cassian thought back to yesterday's selection.
"They all wanted to be chosen and they stood straighter when you entered."
"They smiled." he continued."Some adjusted their dresses."
"A few couldn't even hide their excitement."
Ryker remained quiet.
"And Seraphina?" Cassian's brows drew together.
He searched his memory.
"She..." He stopped. Something occurred to him.
"When you entered..."
"...she wasn't even looking at you." Ryker finally turned.
His silver eyes met Cassian's.
"Exactly." Cassian blinked. He remembered now. While every other woman had been desperately hoping to catch the Alpha King's attention...
Seraphina had been somewhere else entirely. Lost inside her own thoughts. She hadn't even realized Ryker had stopped in front of her until someone whispered for her to bow.
"She wasn't pretending," Ryker said calmly.
"She wasn't calculating and she wasn't trying to become Queen." His voice remained steady.
"She wasn't trying to become anything." Cassian studied him carefully.
"So..."
"That's why you chose her?" Ryker looked away again.
"It was one reason." Cassian caught the distinction immediately.
Which meant there were others. He considered asking.
Instead, he decided against it. If the Alpha King wished to reveal the rest, he would.
If not, no one in the kingdom could force the answer from him.
Another knock interrupted the silence. A royal attendant entered before bowing deeply.
"Your Majesty."
"The candidate has finished her preparations."
"The Queen Mother requests your presence in the Hall of Oaths." Ryker nodded once.
"I'll be there shortly." The attendant withdrew. Cassian stepped aside as Ryker reached for the black ceremonial coat resting across the back of a nearby chair. Silver embroidery caught the morning light as he slipped it over his shoulders before fastening the clasp at his collar.
The familiar cold authority settled around him once more.
Cassian watched him for a moment before speaking quietly.
"I hope..." He hesitated."
...you know what you're doing." Ryker adjusted the cuff of one sleeve.
"So do I." For the first time in years, those four simple words surprised Cassian more than anything else.
Without another sentence, the Alpha King walked toward the door.
Beyond it, the Hall of Oaths waited.
The Hall of Oaths stood at the heart of the Moon Palace, untouched by time and reserved only for ceremonies capable of changing the fate of the kingdom itself.
Its towering bronze doors swung open without a sound as Seraphina was escorted inside by two royal attendants.
She instinctively slowed her steps. The chamber before her was unlike anything she had imagined.
Massive white pillars rose toward a ceiling painted with ancient murals depicting the history of the Moon Kingdom. Crystal chandeliers hung high above, their light reflecting across polished marble floors veined with silver. Along both sides of the hall stood members of the royal council, each dressed in ceremonial robes embroidered with the royal crest. Their expressions remained solemn, their silence making the chamber feel even larger.
At the far end of the hall rested a long table carved from a single block of white stone. Upon it lay several neatly arranged documents, each bearing the royal seal pressed into crimson wax.
Beside them rested a silver quill. Seraphina's gaze lingered on it for only a moment before she lowered her eyes.
"So this is the chosen candidate." The voice belonged to an elderly gentleman seated near the table. His silver hair had been combed neatly behind his head, and a pair of thin spectacles rested upon the bridge of his nose. Although age had softened his features, there was an unmistakable sharpness in his eyes that suggested he had spent a lifetime studying every word placed before him.
The Queen Mother inclined her head.
"It is." The elderly man stood.
"I am Lord Alaric." he introduced, still keeping a stern look.
"I serve as the Royal Chancellor and legal adviser to the Crown." He offered Seraphina a courteous nod.
"It will be my responsibility to explain every clause contained within today's agreement before either party places their signature upon it.
"Seraphina returned the greeting respectfully.
"It's an honor to meet you." A faint smile crossed the old man's face.
"Good manners." He looked briefly toward the Queen Mother.
"They're becoming increasingly rare." The Queen Mother allowed herself the smallest smile before her expression became composed once again.
"You may begin." Lord Alaric carefully unfolded the first document.
"The agreement before you is a royal surrogate contract, issued under the authority of the Moon Crown.
"His calm voice echoed clearly through the silent chamber.
"Should you choose to sign, Lady Seraphina Ashvale will carry an heir for His Majesty, Alpha King Ryker Ashthorn." Seraphina listened without interrupting."
The contract shall remain in effect until the child is safely born."
"Throughout that period, Lady Seraphina shall reside within the Moon Palace under royal protection."
"You will receive the finest medical care available within the kingdom."
"The palace shall provide for all your personal needs." He paused before continuing."Upon confirmation of the pregnancy,"
"...your younger brother, Noah Ashvale, will immediately become the responsibility of the Royal Medical House."
Seraphina's heart skipped. Lord Alaric continued reading.
"The palace physicians will oversee every stage of his treatment."
"If necessary, specialists from neighboring kingdoms shall also be summoned." Her fingers tightened slightly.
Noah. The Queen Mother watched the subtle change in her expression but remained silent.
"There is more." Lord Alaric turned another page.
"A monthly allowance shall be deposited into Lady Seraphina's personal account for the duration of the agreement."
"A separate trust shall be established in Noah Ashvale's name to provide for his future education and living expenses."
Seraphina slowly lifted her head.
"You mean..." She hesitated."Even after the contract ends..."
"My brother will still be protected?" Lord Alaric nodded.
"That is correct." She looked toward the Queen Mother almost instinctively.
"Why?" The question surprised several members of the council. The Queen Mother answered herself.
"Because once the Moon Palace gives its word..."
"...it does not take it back." Silence settled once more. Seraphina lowered her eyes again.
For years she had knocked on countless doors asking for help. Some had pitied her. Others had turned her away. Many had made promises they never intended to keep.
Yet here, inside the palace she had feared only yesterday, every promise was being placed into writing.
It almost didn't feel real. Before she could gather her thoughts, the great bronze doors opened once again.
Every member of the royal council immediately rose to their feet.
The royal guards straightened. Even Lord Alaric stopped speaking.
Without anyone announcing him, Seraphina already knew who had entered.
Alpha King Ryker Ashthorn walked into the Hall of Oaths with the same quiet authority he carried everywhere else. Dressed in a ceremonial black coat embroidered with silver thread, he crossed the chamber at an unhurried pace, his expression as calm and unreadable as ever.
He acknowledged the Queen Mother with a slight nod before taking his place on the opposite side of the stone table.
For the briefest moment, his silver eyes met Seraphina's.
Neither of them spoke or looked away immediately. Then Lord Alaric cleared his throat gently.
"Now that both parties are present..."
"...we may proceed with the final reading of the agreement."
The hall fell into complete silence. Lord Alaric adjusted the final page before placing both hands upon the document.
"There remains only one final clause." His voice was calm, carrying effortlessly through the vast chamber.
"Once this agreement is signed by both parties, it shall become legally binding under the authority of the Moon Crown.
"His gaze shifted toward Seraphina."
From that moment forward, neither party may withdraw without the approval of the Crown itself.
"Seraphina remained still. The words settled heavily in her mind.
Lord Alaric continued.
"The contract shall remain in effect until the surrogate has fulfilled every obligation stated within its provisions."
"The Moon Palace will uphold every promise made within this agreement."
"In return..."
"...Lady Seraphina Ashvale shall devote herself fully to carrying the royal heir." Another pause followed.
The elderly lawyer carefully folded his spectacles before placing them beside the document.
"I am required by law to ask one final question before the signing proceeds." He looked directly at her.
"Lady Seraphina..."
"Have you read and understood every condition explained to you today?"
Seraphina drew a slow breath.
"Yes."
"And do you enter this agreement of your own free will?" For a brief moment, the hall seemed to disappear around her.
Instead, she saw a tiny wooden cottage standing beneath the old maple tree.
She saw her father's warm smile, her mother's gentle hands and a little boy with messy dark hair laughing as he held out a crooked blue bracelet.
"Promise you'll never take it off, Sister."
"I promise." The memory faded. Only Noah remained.
Pale, weak and smiling even while trying to hide his pain.
"Don't worry about me." he said slowly.
"I'll get better." Her fingers slowly tightened around the bracelet beneath her sleeve.
She had made him another promise. She would save him. Whatever it cost.
She lifted her head.
"I understand." Lord Alaric nodded solemnly.
"Very well." He turned the final page around and carefully positioned the contract between Seraphina and the Alpha King.
One royal attendant stepped forward carrying a velvet cushion upon which rested an elegant silver fountain pen engraved with the crest of the Moon Kingdom. Another attendant broke the crimson wax seal protecting the contract.
Everything had been prepared.
The Queen Mother watched without speaking. The members of the royal council held their breath.
Across the table, Ryker Ashthorn remained as unreadable as ever. His silver eyes rested quietly on Seraphina, revealing nothing of the thoughts hidden behind them.
Lord Alaric picked up the pen.
Then, with slow, deliberate care, he placed it beside the signature line. His voice echoed through the chamber.
"Lady Seraphina Ashvale..."
"Once you place your name upon this agreement..."
"...there will be no turning back." Seraphina looked down at the waiting contract.
The ink, the royal seal and the empty line bearing her name.
Beyond that single signature lay Noah's chance to live and also a future she could neither predict nor escape.
She inhaled slowly.
Then, her hand began to move. Her fingers reached toward the silver pen.
Just before her fingertips touched it...

A gentle knock sounded against the bedroom door just as the first rays of sunlight crept through the towering windows.Seraphina stirred beneath the soft blankets, her lashes fluttering open as she adjusted to the unfamiliar surroundings. For a brief moment, she simply lay still, staring at the carved ceiling above her while trying to remember where she was. The room was quiet except for the distant murmur of fountains outside and the cheerful songs of birds hidden somewhere within the palace gardens. Then yesterday came rushing back. The selection, Alpha King and the Queen Mother. The contract waiting to be signed.A slow breath escaped her lips as she pushed herself upright. The enormous bed hardly creased beneath her weight, its mattress softer than anything she had ever slept on. She glanced around the room, still unable to believe that all of it had been prepared for someone like her. The elegant furniture, the polished marble floor, the silver curtains dancing gently in the morn
The Queen Mother slowly looked back at Seraphina, her gaze lingering on the faded blue dress she had questioned only moments earlier. Out of every noble daughter, every princess and every Alpha heiress gathered inside the Moon Palace, the one person she had least expected her son to choose was the quiet commoner standing at the very end of the line.Yet she was the only one he had looked at."As you wish," she replied at last.Turning toward the attendants who were still frozen in place, she regained the calm authority expected of the Queen of the Moon Kingdom."Prepare the surrogate contract. Have a chamber arranged for the chosen candidate. The rest may leave the palace.""Yes, Your Majesty." The attendants hurried to obey.Ryker turned without another word. The royal guards immediately fell in behind him. Within moments, the great doors of the hall closed once more. The silence lasted only a heartbeat. Then the room erupted."How is that possible?""He chose a commoner?""There mus
"Stand straight. If I catch anyone slouching again, she'll be escorted out of this hall before the selection even begins."The sharp warning immediately straightened the young woman standing in front of Seraphina. Her shoulders snapped back, her cheeks flushed crimson, and she quickly lowered her head, hoping the royal attendant hadn't noticed her trembling."I'm... I'm sorry.""Sorry?" someone scoffed from behind. "Do you honestly think an apology is going to make the Alpha King choose you?"A ripple of quiet laughter spread through the line."He probably won't even spare her a glance.""He won't look at any of us." That single sentence stole the laughter almost instantly.Several girls turned at once."What do you mean?" A tall blonde noblewoman folded her arms confidently, clearly enjoying the attention."My cousin serves inside the Moon Palace. She's been here long enough to witness every selection.""So?" Five ladies asked in unison."So every time the Queen Mother gathers candid
