Chapter 10

Lucien’s POV

Three days, that’s how long our youngest has been gone. I had told him repeatedly to abort the solo mission that he wanted to embark on. Yes, the info he had gotten us the first two times was valuable, but not enough to trade into werewolf territory the third time, especially since the world was curling itself around our necks like an invisible rope and choking us all. No matter what, we had to maintain morale, and one of us getting captured was not going to be an amazing morale boost for our warriors.

But Jacob wasn’t going to be Jacob if he wasn’t the stubborn hothead he was. He had managed to snitch his way past the guards I set to watch him, and along with him, our reserve of scent cloakers.

Gabriel was still on the battlefield, trying to maintain one of our borders. When he returned back to hear Jacob was gone, in seconds there was a hole the shape of his fist on the wall. He wanted to hold an all-out search, but that would be the same thing as us holding up a banner and telling the other side that they had a valuable hostage they could capture.

In the end, we had to be discreet in our worries.

But as more time passed, our worries were beginning to pile up, and just as even my own resolve was about to break, he arrived.

Well, seeing it like that sounded far too grand.

He was dragged in like a half-dead corpse by no other person than Vivian Gandallon..

Vivian Gandallon—the Viper.

At first, I took it to be an illusion. It made no sense that one of the biggest thorns that had stuck itself deep into our flesh would return our brother back to us mostly unharmed.

Unfortunately, it was Gabriel that recovered himself first, and he was ready to launch himself at her until I grabbed his arm, straining myself to hold him still.

Then I came closer, whispering, "Gabriel, calm yourself down for a second."

"Can’t you see who she is? She’s the Viper and she has walked straight into our territory! This is the werewolf kingdom's way of spitting in our face. We cannot let her live a second longer!"

"I’ve always told you to think first, Gabriel, before you throw a punch. Look... that’s our brother..."

"He has been drugged," Gabriel pointed out, his anger leveling down but not disappearing completely. Apart from the drug, there were no other injuries, at least no other visible ones on Jacob, and even Gabriel, would have to consider why she would bother bringing him here instead of taking him as a valuable hostage.

There were too many things that were not adding up, and answers that could not be cut from her corpse, so I made the next best decision.

Locking her up in our dungeon, she didn’t resist at all. In fact, she made herself quite comfortable, like she was completely unaware that she was surrounded by enemies on all sides.

I had heard rumors that she had been replaced by her mate. Perhaps she had lost her mind?

The scent cloakers on Jacob had rubbed off on her, so it was making it extremely difficult to get a read on her. Which left me with no other choice other than the undesirable one of talking to her face-to-face, with just a couple of silver bars standing between us, reminding her who was prisoner and who was the captor.

"I never thought I would get a chance to speak directly to the Viper," I said as I walked into the light of the dull bulb.

"The honor is all mine," she made an effort to seem lighthearted, but there was a void in her jokes, an aching emptiness that anyone could look into and see that it was just a pretense.

She sat up from the bed, one of the sparse amenities in the dungeons, coming closer. She had dark circles surrounding her eyes, her hair a tangled mess, and her clothes completely crumpled. She looked nothing like the Viper I had imagined in my mind, that was until I looked into her eyes.

They burned with a passion that pinned me in place, forcing me to maintain eye contact when I didn't even allow my highest-ranking Lycans to look me in the eye.

I managed to break away from it, keeping my calm composure above everything else.

"Let’s not beat around the bush. What are you after? Why did you bring my brother back to us when you could have taken him deeper into werewolf territory and used him as a hostage?"

My mind had run through a dozen different possibilities, but the one that she told me almost made me freeze.

"I have severed all ties with the Voss pack. Now I want to align myself with the Lycans."

I was sure it was my ears playing tricks on me. The Viper, who was known to be, with mild exaggeration, the most viciously loyal woman in Voss pack’s history, was not only cutting ties but coming to join hands with the Lycans.

"I can imagine how you might have been able to deceive my youngest brother with that hogwash," I said, adding a stern edge to my voice. "But I’m not falling for it. I’m sure that you are definitely after something more and this is just a pretense..." I came closer, holding her eyes this time with authority, not whatever was happening before. "Is there some kind of long-term plan to infiltrate us? Get as much information as you can before going back and feeding it to them? Is that what this is?"

It was the way she kept on with the eye contact that really threw me off. I was used to most wolves caving in just from the way I looked at them, but the way she looked right back at me was as if she was waiting for me to cave.

I backed away, covering my eyes as I raked my palm through my hair.

"I can make you talk and…"

"We don’t have time for this."

She interrupted me. I can’t remember the last time anyone interrupted me. I might have done something I would have regretted next, but she spoke up and I was forced to listen.

"Jacob doesn’t have much time. If he doesn't get the antidote, then he'll die.”

Chapter 17Vivian’s POVI could break out of this cell if I wanted to.But patience, they say, is a virtue or in my case, the only cushion against slow, deliberate torture. Ever since the night the Lycan princes found out that I was their fated mate, I hadn’t seen them. The days had strolled by, from what I recorded based on the meager meals being served, it had been at least three nights since then, and so far, I’ve heard nothing on their end.But I knew they would come. My wolf, I can’t believe I have one now, calls out to theirs with a yearning that makes distance impossible. At least, not for long.I curled my fingers on the bare mattress, then released them along with the tension. The dungeon had the most basic of amenities, but it’s not as if I was given any special treatment in Voss that would have made it easier for me to adjust to this place.Still, I wish one of them would show up. At least somebody would remember to bring my food. The best thing I’ve eaten in the past three

Chapter 16Jacob’s POV"It can't be!" Gab growled, massaging a balled-up fist with fingers that shook to the wave of his fury. "I would have been fine with any woman, but her?! What is the Moon Goddess thinking?! Why her?!"He had that look—like he wanted to punch something, or someone. Instead, he turned to the aged moonlight wine and poured himself a long swig before throwing his shoulders back and staring at the fireplace like it owed him answers to his dilemma.Lucien, as usual, took a more calm approach, even when the ground beneath our feet was being slid right off. But you could tell that he was troubled in his own way. His brows were heavily knitted with thought, his legs crossed to cosplay relaxation while he swirled a glass of wine without drinking any of it. It was funny, since he was the one always badgering Gabriel and me out of stronger drinks laced with the right amount to make a nice kick instead of plunging us into a permanent slumber.I wasn't drinking, according to

Chapter 15 Lucien's POVWe have gotten wind that there is a prisoner within the Lycan castle, and as the Moon Council, it is only right that we are kept up to track with what is happening within the pack. I artificially kept my lips in a smile that did not reach my eyes, then, I folded my fingers in front of each other, laying them out on the table that stretched from one end to the other in the grand room. This room was used for my meetings and those of my brothers with the Moon Council. Most of their members were middle-aged and older, which gave them the misconception that they had wisdom to give. Well, some years had just been spent gathering audacity, the type of audacity that made them comfortable waltzing into our castle and making demands like this. In the past, the Moon Council knew their place and wouldn't dare do this. Unfortunately, because of the war that was dragging on and against our favor, we've had to make some sacrifices for the sake of our pack members. Resources f

Chapter 14Jacob's POV"Jacob, you're awake!" Gab said, and despite the usual deep grit in his voice, you could hear the relief under those several layers. He seemed to forget about the Viper completely and came to me. He grabbed my arm and inspected me from head to toe. "You are awake," he said again. This time it had a little less relief and more realization. Then he said it one more time and his grip on my arm fastened stronger. "Why do you always have to be so stubborn? I told you that you are not supposed to go to the werewolf territory, and yet you still ignored orders and went ahead to do what you wanted to. How are we going to lead our people if this is how you act out every time?"I sighed deeply. As much as I would have loved to be scolded in front of one of our greatest nemesis and a regular guard, that would just have to wait for another time, but not now. "I'll explain everything later, Gab, but now..."I snatched the keys away from him and rushed over, using my Lycan spe

Chapter 13Vivian's POVBoth Lucien and Jacob had been angry when they saw me, but none of it could compare to the look that their brother was giving to me right now. It was something that was so saturated in pure hatred that logic had no place within it. There was no way I could reason with him. I had been in the battlefield long enough through the bloodshed that I could recognize it from a mile away, and it was painted across his eyes so familiarly. I would have to be a fool to miss it or be completely blind."Didn't you hear me?" he roared at the guard behind him, who had begun to tremble with his fingers nervously."Prince Gabriel, I can't give you the keys."I could see all of the veins popping from the side of his head as he turned. "What do you mean you can't give me the keys? That is an order!""But Prince Lucien said that…"He marched over to the guard. "You know I don't like to repeat myself, so it's either you find the keys for me or face the consequences when I'll have to

Chapter 12Gabriel's POV"When Jacob finally survives this, I'm going to kill him," I said with a bitter growl. Staring at his unconscious form dripping with sweat and pain, the last healer had stepped out of the room, stating that they had done all they could and his body's natural healing system was supposed to kick in. If only they knew that we had taken instructions from a werewolf and that of what we were banking to truly heal our brother, the Royal bloodline would never recover from the humiliation."Go easy on him," Lucien said, sitting cross-legged facing the youngest of us three. "He’s still growing, still learning. We can't expect him to make the best decisions all the time, can we?""We're barely that far apart in age," I reminded him. "...And both of us were at his age once. Neither of us were so irresponsible and dumb.""That's because we didn't have anyone to support us if we were either of those things, but Jacob has it. Shouldn't we take that as a golden lining?"I s
