Aria’s POV
“What are you waiting for?”
“The instructions are simple.”
“Sweep the floor, mop the floor and wash the dishes. EVERYTHING and I mean everything should be sparkling.”
“Is that understood?” Maria’s voice sounded firm and authoritative.
I knew I had to do everything she instructed within the next thirty minutes lest, I would be running into some troubles again. The weight of her words settled on my chest like a warning I had heard too many times before.
“Yes ma’am,” I answered. My tone respectful. I did not dare hesitate.
“Good! I will be in the living room, watching movies with my worthy daughter.” she hissed and stepped away from me.
Worthy daughter.
That word lingered long after she left, echoing louder than her footsteps.
That’s always what she called Selene, my twin sister. While I, I was the unworthy daughter, the black sheep of the family, an embrassment to the moon goddess because at thirteen when I was supposed to see my wolf, I didn’t but Selene’s did. Instantly, she became the daughter she loved and I, the daughter she wished she never born.
Ever since then, eight years ago now, I have been living like a slave in this house. The shift did not happen overnight, but it did not take long either.
I was not given proper meals anymore. I was the one who did all the laundry, cooked all the food and cleaned everything in the house. Every chore became mine, every mistake became my fault.
I grabbed the sweeping stick, knowing that my time was already ticking, I began to sweep from the laundry room that I was. I could almost hear the seconds slipping away with each movement.
I swept everything within ten minutes, making sure that I was fast enough and I would have other time to do other things I was instructed. I did not stop to rest, not even for a second.
I grabbed the mopping stick, Maria loved that the floor was sparkling.
If there was anything particular of dirt no matter how small it could be, she would make sure that I sweep everything again and mop it again right from the beginning so I became very careful. One mistake meant starting over, and starting over meant punishment.
Doing that for another ten minutes, I knew it. My arms ached but I ignored it.
I have ten minutes left.
The realization pushed me forward.
I ran to the kitchen.
“Fuck me.” the words escaped my mouth before I could stop it.
The dishes were mountainous and too stained with sticky dirt as though they were intentional. As though someone had made sure this would be impossible.
I sighed. The sound was quiet, but heavy.
I approached it and began to wash them one after the other. I did not think, I just moved.
Five minutes later,
“Are you not done, good for nothing brat?!” Maria barked.
Her voice sliced through the kitchen before I could even respond.
I kept on washing. She barged into the room.
Her eyes turned to ice.
“You are supposed to be done ten minutes ago.”
“Always lazy!”
“We have been too soft with you. You are taking it for granted.”
Each word hit harder than the last, leaving no space for explanation.
She dug her hand into the washing basin. Her claws sharpened out of her nails.
Her fangs grew out of her teeth.
I recognized that look. That was the Luna's anger. The kind that never ended well for me.
If Maria was not pleased, she’d not hesitate to show it that she was the Luna and she could do and undo. Power always came first. I always came last.
“I’m sorry.” I pleaded.
Being sorry was the only saving grace that I have. If I were not sorry even when I was not wrong, I would be sent out of the pack. I would be termed a coward and a curse.
Cambridge was a city where any wolf without a pack could be torn into pieces.
It was a city where there was no room for cowardice. You must either have a pack or be ripped apart by cursed, hungry and stray Betas, Gammas, Zetas or any member of the rank which has the ability for battle.
That truth had been drilled into me enough times. The thought alone was enough to keep me obedient.
“Sorry won’t save you now,” she hissed.
She packed all the dirty plates in the basin in one single grab.
“CRACK!” she smashed them on my head.
The impact came before the pain.
Blood spilled, the flesh of my forehead sliced open.
I quickly held it with my hand. Keeping pressure at it. My vision blurred for a second but I forced myself to stay standing.
“Heh.” I heard it immediately.
Selene standing at the entrance of the room, amused by what Maria just did to me.
I shot my gaze at her.
She had happiness in it. It was all definition that she wanted Maria to do it again. There was no sympathy. There never was.
The blood was streaming out amidst my fingers now. They already found a path that the hand could not stop them from flowing. Warm, steady, unstoppable.
“Ten minutes.” Maria hissed again.
“That’s all I am giving you. Or else…”
The threat hung unfinished, but I understood it perfectly.
“Let’s go, darling.” She stretched her hand to Selene and they both walked away like the lovely mother and child. As if nothing had just happened.
Their laughter faded into the distance, leaving silence behind.
I quickly ran to my room. Each step felt heavier, but I could not slow down.
Cleaned the antibiotic bottle, and poured it on my forehead.
The pain was really painful but then I endured it. I had no choice but to.
I bandaged my head immediately. My hands worked fast, practiced.
Assuming my wolf already showed up. This wouldn’t have been needed because I was going to have a healing ability. But right now, I didn’t have it. I was just merely a human girl and a slave in my own mother’s house.
The same mother who ordered me to call her by name like everyone else because I was not worthy enough to call her mother.
I returned to the kitchen. There was no time to dwell.
Picked every plate that fell to the floor when she smashed it on my head.
The broken ones I threw into the waste bag. And the solid ones I began to wash. My movements were slower now, but I forced them to continue.
Water ran. Plates clinked. Time slipped.
“Aria!” Maria shouted suddenly again from the living room.
My hands froze for a brief second before continuing.
“What the fuck is this stain!”
“Get over here you piece of shit!”
Selene’s POVI panicked. My heart pounded so hard that I could hear the frantic rhythm echoing in my ears. Every beat seemed louder than the last, threatening to expose me before I could escape. This was a critical moment. If I was caught, it would not simply be because I had entered the Alpha's quarters without permission. It would be because I had spied on a private moment that I had absolutely no right to witness.Such an act was forbidden. The punishment for a crime like this was severe, and everyone in the wolf world knew it.Fear surged through me.Without wasting another second, I spun around and raced downstairs with every ounce of agility I possessed. The familiar scent of the Alpha still lingered in the air behind me, making my pulse race even faster. The moment I reached the shaft I had used to enter the quarters, I jumped into it and descended as quickly as possible.I landed smoothly and immediately took off toward the guest house. My mind worked rapidly. If anyone saw me
Selene’s POVAlpha Thalos and Aria followed the back door of the hall unlike the rest of the pack who had used the front grand door out of the hall.Immediately the pack all left. I stepped back into the hall from the dark wall in the corner I was hiding at.One thing was clear, had it been that the pack had seen me as a threat, this wouldn't have been a success. They would have picked interest in me and watched me closely. As they were leaving the hall, they would have made sure I left entirely as well. But with the way Aria presented me, gave me the privilege to sit among the betas even while we had dinner, it passed an indirect message to the pack.I was welcome. I could move around in the territory, I was free to do whatever I wanted.Stepping back into the hall, I locked the front grand door from behind. Why shouldn’t I?I already processed the thought. If I didn’t, there were chances that a member could suddenly walk in. Then see me.If that happened, I lost the chance to be in
Alpha Thalos’ POV“I must be wary of her. I do not trust her.”This was the exact word I told myself after Aria left my quarters when she came to tell me about her sister’s soon arrival. Aria was my Luna. I loved her. Because of that, I had to be gentle with the people she cared about, unlike how I dealt with the rest of my subjects.Still, no matter how much I tried to calm myself, I could not ignore the feeling gnawing at the back of my mind.Allowing Selene into my territory was dangerous. The memory of Wolfhaven lingered stubbornly in my thoughts.Eventually, night came and it was time to dine.According to the customs of my territory, the entire pack gathered in the dining hall to eat together. It was a tradition that reinforced unity and reminded everyone that despite ranks and titles, we were one pack.As I entered the hall, Aria took her rightful seat beside me.Soon, every seat was occupied. The hall buzzed with quiet conversations and laughter. Then the grand doors opened.T
Selene’s POVWhen a hideous cat wants to steal meat from its owner’s pot, such a cat would sneak up into the pot at the dark hours of the night. But for my own case, I would pretend, smile into her face while I am able to deceive her into trusting me and finally, I attack. That was always my way. Patience first. Smiles second. Destruction last. And now, everything I had planned for was finally within reach. As I stood before the gate of the SilverGold pack, watching it open right for me, I felt the familiar weight of anticipation settle in my chest. The guards did not hesitate. They did not question me. They simply allowed me in as if I belonged. That alone made everything easier.Inside the territory, my eyes immediately caught sight of Aria in the distance. She wore a gown designed with gold, shimmering under the pack’s refined lighting. It clung to her in a way that made her look different from the person I remembered in WolfHaven. That version of her had been weaker. Softer. Easie
Selene’s POVI widened my cheek into a smirk. The call was a success. To go to SilverGold was a success.I remembered it. The way Aria pronounced it out of her dirty mouth.“Yes, yes you can.”As though we were cool with each other. As though we were sisters who shared secrets and laughter.Even as she never saw her wolf. The thought alone made my smirk deepen.Let me make something clear. When someone was deprived of family, they would do anything in their possible power to have that family close to them.Anything.In other words, ever since Aria never saw her wolf but I've seen mine, mother and I have made sure to distance ourselves from her and made her our slave. And despite everything we did to her, she still longed for us.Deep down, she wanted that family bond and now, just on the fake tears that mother was treating me badly, she already wanted to help. How pathetic. How predictable.I widened my cheek wider into a broader smirk. Then I got into the car, turned on the ignition a
Selene’s POVI stepped outside the tree. Suddenly,WHOOSH!I heard.Turning back immediately, I saw it.There was no longer a tree standing where it was earlier. There was nothing in the space. It was empty.Completely empty.Just like that, the strange tree had vanished as though it had never existed in the first place. It was almost as if the Witch of the Dark Alley had already seen me earlier on, even from Wolfhaven, and had deliberately allowed me to see the tree so that I could find my way to her. But now, after giving me the portion, she purposely hid the tree in some kind of illusion so that I would not be able to see her tree any longer.I raised the potion in my hand and stared at the dark liquid swirling softly inside the bottle.Without any doubt in me, I knew it.Once I gave the potion for Aria to drink, then it would be the beginning of her end.Just like the Witch said. She would become ugly. The beauty Alpha Thalos adored so much would disappear. Then I would have Alpha
Aria’s POVI stood at the center of the pack residence. My feet rooted to the cold floor as I stared up at the giant wall clock mounted on the top of the tenth-story building. Time moved slowly, almost cruelly, as if it wanted me to feel every passing second.“9 pm,” I murmured under my breath.I
Selene’s POVShe snapped her finger, and instantly the pain she had inflicted on my body disappeared immediately, as though it had never existed at all. The sudden relief left my senses sharp and alert, my breathing steadying while my mind recalibrated to the dangerous reality in front of me.I sto
Selene’s POVThis place. It looked so eerie, so forgotten, so dark and terrifying. For five long hours, I had driven relentlessly until I reached the North. Until I reached the Dark Alley.Throughout the journey, I hadn't even pressed the brake for the countless holes scattered across the road that
Aria’s POV“I don’t understand. I cleaned it. I made sure it was—”“Shut the f*ck up, Aria.” Maria yelled. Her voice cut through me so sharply that the rest of my words died in my throat.“Are you calling me a liar?”“No, Luna,” I answered quickly, lowering my gaze.“Are you saying Selene, my preci
